Larry,
You might have been thinking of an earlier discussion about BMW diesel wagons
from the 1980s. These were nasty to begin with and had a history of some
serious engine (head) related issues that were never resolved, a la the 350SDL
and the infamous "rodbender" diesels.

costing big $$s to repair. If I am mistaken about the quality I would

Peter,
I have found the W140 to be a pretty robust platform, and relatively cheap to
maintain and work on. My 95 S500 coupe is rapidly approaching 275k, and it's
running great and has had minimal issues. Parts are readily available and not
terribly expensive.
I will be adding another W140 to
We have the same dilemma -- the 300 SDL is getting up there in years
and miles, so is the 87 300D, and I am not excited about the
replacements. The quality is simply not there, after Chrysler got
involved Benz seems to have decided to make very expensive disposable
cars, with electronic ev
So, the ML and R are not very well made it sounds?Eventually we're
going to need a newer car. I would like to stay with MB but the decline
in quality has me worried.Maybe I should look at Hyundai? Their 10
yr/100K warranty looks attractive,
What about VW ?
Thanks,
Larry

My sister had a 2011 ML with diesel engine, on a three year lease. During
the lease, it had one of the computers fail while sister was driving in six
lanes of freeway traffic. Car totally shutdown, no warning. A very
dangerous event, and thank God there weren't any collisions or injuries.
