The POS terminals are in full PCI compliance over cellular, which is why we did
it that way. The alternative was to have to segment off the network there,
which we didn’t want to do for such a small amount of traffic and the security
aspect wouldn’t be any better, either.

Understand that loss of signal = loss of business. Totally get that. This was
more of a clusterriffic set of circumstances that pushed us into doing it that
way.

No 802.1 providers? No elevation? My boss uses Starlink on his boat, he's
quite happy with it.
Our 802.1 provider can service a neighborhood via an on-house repeater if
they can service just
one house through their regular antennae. Maybe if you climb a tree?
Provide your own antenna
that way?

All of our critical operations at the Park are wired. (Critical === take
in money, or
deliver guest services.) Not an accident, consider the 'fun' some asshat
could have
doing DoS with a jammer... we only operate 100 days a year, the loss or

Don’t knock it, they worked!

I “knew” a guy who used one to get HBO when they used point-to-point for signal
distribution. I think that was in the early 80s.

I'm fighting at the great northern estate to get internet service. Spectrum is
the local cable provider but they end 3,000 feet in any direction. There are
about a dozen homes in our general neighborhood they don't service, including
us.

Last year I could get T-Mobile home internet but this year they won't let me, I
guess too many people signed up.

Our last 2 options are Starlink or Hughesnet. Starlink is (much) more expensive
but seems like it would support my work from home Zoom lifestyle better.

They provided a “Femtocell”, which is like a commercial version of a MiFi or

Wireless communication is a wonderful thing, but can be difficult in practice.

Re: [MBZ] Blue Benz antifreeze at El Mercado de Wal

2024-03-20 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Our WiFI guys are struggling with a cellular issue we have at a local community
center that is heavily used. They need dedicated connections for POS terminals
so they can sell tickets at the venue. Cellular service is lousy, Verizon knows
it, but has no plans on adding any cells nearlby in the near future. Add to
this the construction of the venue is concrete and steel, so it resembles a
giant Faraday cage, too.

They provided a “Femtocell”, which is like a commercial version of a MiFi or
cellualr hotspot. It works great, costs a lot of money, but has yet to be
proven. The biggest concern because it’s a vendor device and not a County
device is that we can’t control traffic on it, that is, we can't lock it down
to just serve the POS terminals, it’s all (customers) or nothing.

Wireless communication is a wonderful thing, but can be difficult in practice.

It wouldn't be all that hard to make the store into a Faraday cage that
effectively blocks cell signal. A little would still sneak in through the doors
and maybe if they didn't bother to coat the glass.

Back in 2001 the company I worked for moved into a new building. They had
specifically made the inside of the building cell dead. It was astonishingly
effective, IIRC even radios didn't receive outside signals.
The idea was to keep you off your phone so you would do work.

Of course everybody hated it. The sales people especially declared that it cost
something like 30% of their productivity because they were tied to their desk
phone. This was in the days before laptops and WIFI.

Pretty quick the building had a series of cell repeaters (at great expense) to
provide service inside...

They’ll use that data when you checkout as well, as they can track your

This infographic on geolocation is not exactly what I'm describing, but it

As an aside, and I have nothing to substantiate this, but I believe that
Walmart also “floods” the cellular bands in their stores to force you to their
sanctioned WiFi. This is well within the realm of current technology. I have
noticed that my cell signal drops signficantly when I’m in a Walmart. Sure,
part of that is no doubt due to the structure, but I’ve seen it in three stores
now, and one in particular is concerning as there’s an active cell site right
next door. When I walk in I’ve got five bars, as soon as I move into the store
my coverage drops to one bar. I see similar but less significant drops in the
other stores I’ve checked this out in. It just seems too coincidental.

Call me paranoid, but I know from direct experience how aggressive Walmart is
about collecting customer data. I’m not singling them out by any means, as
plenty of other retailers do this, too.

I would add that while I can’t reveal details due to agreements I have with my
employer, I was directly involved in working on the requirements for a system
like this that was going to be used to track employee and volunteer locations
within a building. We strongly recommended that the potential for abuse was
significant, as well as the privacy concerns, and as a result got that idea
shot down.

I was aware of the capabilities of the technology for the most part, but had
never seen it in actual use. It was unsettling, to say the least.

There are a couple of things I do to express my displeasure about this:

I avoid self checkout at other stores, but Aldi offers a streamlined and
painless experience.

Which lead me to think I don’t remember prices going down when they got rid of

But we all know there is a check valve in the pipeline of rising prices.

Re: [MBZ] Blue Benz antifreeze at El Mercado de Wal

2024-03-19 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Couple of observations:

1.) I only buy AF from the stealer, so I get it full-strength.

2.) I have noticed our Mercado de Wal is offering staffed checkout again, and
not just one, typically two or more. This is even in the early morning, like
7-ish on Saturday and Sunday.

Used to be you were funneled into a row or two of self-checkout terminals and
there was one person in charge of overseeing them. Guess shrinkage is costing
more than human checkout…

On the flip side, my local Lowe’s has been remodeled so that they no longer
have staffed checkouts. There are two or three people hanging around, but
you’re now required to scan your own stuff, lines are based on whether or not
you’re using plastic or cash. Used to be there were two self-checkouts and 4-6
lines, if I recall.

Re: [MBZ] Blue Benz antifreeze at El Mercado de Wal

2024-03-19 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I was thinking, as I was in the self check out at the Safeway the other day,
that we’ve been told if the minimum wage and Arizona goes up to whatever it is
supposed to go up to, we can expect to see a rise and prices to reflect that.
Which lead me to think I don’t remember prices going down when they got rid of
cashiers and I had to start checking out my own groceries.

But we all know there is a check valve in the pipeline of rising prices.

[MBZ] Blue Benz antifreeze at El Mercado de Wal

2024-03-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I went to El Mercado de Wal to get a battery for my tractor today and
figured I'd pick up a coupla jugs of antifreeze.  Saw the blue stuff for
Euro cars was on clearance for $9.50 which was lower than any of the
other stuff they had, and was $16.63 regular price.  There are some blue
versions for Asian and Merkun cars too but this one was on clearance.  I
grabbed the 4 jugs on the shelf, said it was for 2014 and earlier Benzes.

Go to the (self) checkout and the jugs rang up normal price so I called
the attendant woman over and she adjusted the price for me, no questions
no checking, so I appreciated that.  It got me thinking I could have
said anything, I don't think she really cared one way or the other.  The
lack of oversight there I could have walked out with the whole load had
I been inclined to do so, which is probably not very uncommon.  It
wasn't very busy there either which was kinda unusual, I hit Costco too
and it was mobbed for some reason on a early Tuesday afternoon.

There is no full strength AF on the shelves any more, you have to buy
the 50/50 stuff which I guess is more convenient but I kinda like to
roll my own.  Oh well, progress and an accommodation to the dumbing down
of the populace.

Anyway, it was a good deal.  Costco had M1 oil on sale too but it was
still quite a bit more than the Costco flavor.
