I think that the pound of 60/40 multicore solder that i bought in 1968 will probably last though my son's and my grandson's life times . . . On Sat, May 20, 2017 at 8:12 AM, Jim Cathey via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > The solder I use is the old stuff, with lead. > > -- Jim >

The problem is the lead free solder, it was a fairly new thing then, and what they used cracks badly in use. Takes out relays, especially smart ones, CC amps, and PBCUs. Can be an issue with engine electronics too, not the "brain" so much as the connectors coming loose. Peter

I must disagree about the halfway job. I've done more than a dozen of these, and every one worked when I was done with it. Several took more than one resoldering. VDO did a bad job in those years. And if you don't remove the conformal coating, you get a bunch of burned varnish all over the

I don’t buy into the “reflow every joint” approach on cruise amps, as it’s been my experience this rarely yields results. What you need to do it find all of the electrolytic capacitors, which will be probably 8-10 total on the circuit board, and replace them. You don’t need to strip any
