Re: [MBZ] Diesel fuel mileage

2023-10-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Bio-D would have less energy but I've found it to be good for the car in other
ways.

This makes me think. The snowmobile club has an old farm tractor we mow the
trails with. Its gotten persnickity in the extreme. I bought some diesel purge
to run through it but I'm wondering if a couple gallons of biodiesel through it
might not do as good a job cleaning the IP and associated gubbins...

2023-10-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Back in the day when I tracked mileage carefully I could definitely see
differences in energy content from the fuel at different stations.

There was one Mobil station that was generally the most expensive around but
it'd get 1-2mpg better than most. I also found one place off the highway that
was really cheap where the mileage was 1-2mpg worse...

It’s been many years but is it just me, diesel seemed like it used to smell
much more potent when being pumped back in the old days than it does now.
Probably because of the sulfur being removed. Seemed like mileage was better
back then too.

Drove the 2014 E250 to BWI Marshall Airport last night. The trip covered
40 highway miles with a fuel economy of 49 mpg. Added a passenger and
three heavy suitcases for the return. Gauge readout was 47.1 mpg for the
80 mile RT.

Reminds me of a crazy idea a coworker had: The logic was that in the early
morning, when it’s cooler, you’ll get more gasoline out of the pump because the
gasoline is cooler, and therefore denser, meaning that if you fill up early in
the morning you really get “more” fuel out of the pump.

Our family had the GM diesel fever in the early 80’s after I lit that flame
with my 1972 220D in 1978.
My dad bought four Chevy pickups with diesels for his business, traded his 1980
Toronado for a 1982 Diesel Toronado, and my pa-in-law waffled for three week
trying to choose between an ‘82 Monte Carlo diesel or an ‘82 Cutlass diesel. He
chose the Cutlass because my never say die MIL liked the color better.

So that’s like $14/hr if you’re pushing it. Not too bad for the work it will
do.

I have a 4’ bush hog for mine that I found really cheap, looks new, but the
mounts need some modifications for it to really fit right on the side bars of

My dad, circa 1950, laughed all the way to the bank. He used a then-new
Farmall 200
for custom haying. Mowing via sickle-bar mower didn't take significant juice,
and raking
was done at what amounted to a fast idle. The money shot was that he was using
a
baler that had its own 2-cylinder air-cooled Wisconsin motor on it, rather than
tractor PTO.
Baling takes significant horsepower, but the dedicated motor was optimized for
that task.

He said he used half the gas of his competitors, most using Ford 9N (?)
tractors with
PTO balers. Oddly, he didn't charge any less! Pure Profit. :-)

When we switched from the 283 Moline to the diesel Oliver, fuel costs plummeted.
Diesels are so much more efficient at partial load.

I ran my 1952 Farmall Super M on the vast northern estate yesterday. It was
rated for 44hp at the drawbar. It's the big 264ci gas engine, rated for 3.7
gallons an hour at full load. It handles a 6 foot bush hog pretty well.
Dry the tractor is rated for 5600#, ours is probably close to 7000#.

[MBZ] Diesel zero turn grasshoppers

2023-06-02 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes

Anybody know anything about these? Supposedly these were built by grasshopper
back in the years this one was built. And grasshopper is supposed to be great.
This is probably overkill but I kind of like the idea of a front deck that can
go up under fences and under low bushes and trees.

It seems gas went back down about half way to reasonable. The cheapest I have
seen diesel is $4.29. All anyone cares about though is the price of gas. I
guess I really should start driving more m112 powered vehicles.

I saw a sobering video once. Guy runs out in his underwear holding a
pistol.

Burglars were 3 man team. Driver, ransacker, and armed overwatch.
Overwatch had an AR-15 and was shooting at the homeowner from
concealment.

Not good when you're standing in the open holding a handgun.

I couldn't find that video just now, but there's this:

In the other neighborhood we lived in there would be occasional incidents with
young urban men who would walk down the street, trying car doors to see if they
were locked, and if not, rummage through the vehicle looking for anything of
value.

I would see then on my security cameras, they were pretty bold.

When I had a 400E it would trip the alarm if it was locked and you pulled on
the passenger door handle. Sure enough, they set it off one night.

I watched the playback on the security camera, as it was pretty entertaining
watching them scatter.

Stealing gas is about the lowest kind of theft.

We've only had one minor car theft in the 16 years we've lived here, somebody
stole the change out of my '85 190D (MB content). It's interesting when you
consider that the people across the street from me are total scumbags.
Apparently the know enough not to try that around here.

The barn on the vast northern estate has many forms of entry, the 2 garage door
openings on the end are covered with a kind of industrial belting, it's
basically thick cloth nailed to the wall with a 2x6 across the bottom. I left
my Super M in there last winter along with a lawnmower and power washer and a 2
gallon can of gas. All of it was undisturbed this spring. We have excellent
neighbors up there, always looking out for us.

Not lately.
They got my dad's S-10 during Desert Storm.
Pissed him off, they not only siphoned it, they stole or threw away his
gas cap.
He replaced it, and the cap on mom's Ciera, with a locking cap.

Also during the Desert Storm pricing, saw a drive off theft at a Checker
station.
Asshat parked an old beater truck at the farthest pump and filled it
with Premium.
When the clerk saw him park there she was on high alert.
When he started pumping premium she wrote down his plate number.
Called the cops as he was driving off.

By the turn of the century, everybody had gone to prepay only.
Now nobody drives off without paying because nobody pumps without

paying.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Travel

2022-06-05 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
In today's instant satisfaction world, the fine art of stealing gas by
siphon has become a lost art. The preferred method now is to jam a
sharpened #3 phillips screwdriver into the bottom of your tank and shove a
bucket under it. when the bucket gets full, they grab the bucket and
screwdriver and simply leave the rest of the tank to drain out on the
ground.
Apparently EPA and Hazmat rules do not apply to gas thief operations.
The stick and drain method defeats the fill hose restrictions and, wtf
they don't care if your gas pours out.

There was a huge surge in road bike sales in 1974.
My 1974 Maino probably would have never left Italy if it wasn't for the
USA gas crisis. I only saw one other Maino in person, ever. It was also
mid-70s vintage, chained to a bike rack at U of M.

One of my friends at MSU had his dad's hand-me-down Raleigh
Professional. Full Campagnolo Record groupo, the most expensive bike
parts in the world. His dad bought it to ride to work in the gas crisis
and hadn't touched it since. I can imagine him walking into a bike
store, asking for the best they had, and leaving with that thing for
about the same money my dad paid for a new 500cc Suzuki.

My Maino was ridden hard for years before I got it. Probably 30,000
miles, plus the thousands I rode it in the 1980s. The only original
Campagnolo parts left on it were the hubs. I replaced the rear axle and
put over 25,000 more miles on those hubs, laced new rims on them a
couple of times.

People bitched about 50 cent gas when Nixon and Ford were Presidents,
but it was the gas lines and even/odd rationing that had the biggest
effect.

If somebody's making payments and buying insurance on their $80k
brodozer, it doesn't greatly matter whether they get 12mpg on $3 gas or
$10 gas. They'll bitch about it but they'll still buy it if it's
available.

Some expert somewhere is predicting fuel prices will be double their
current price within a year.  You would think the demand would already
be down since nobody wants to work and they are just sitting at home.  I
can't figure out how they are paying their bills though.

Not that I’m aware of. I’ve never seen anything but the regular fuels, but it’s
possible that it’s offered at places I haven’t visited. We are at 7,000’, so
there is a hit you take for mildly reduced performance. I think most modern
cars deal with it without an issue.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel

2022-05-21 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
As I understand it, with CDI engines you need to watch for "black death" due to
leaky injector seals. For Bluetec engines I think concerns tend to be around
the DPF stuff but if you take regular long highway drives that helps. It's not
an ideal car if you are doing mostly short trips, but no diesel really is. They
need to get properly warmed up, and with Bluetec the DPF needs to complete its
"regneration" cycle where it burns off accumulated soot.

I liked it back in the old days when car diesel pumps were way off by
themselves separate from the regular gas pumps. You could pull in and out easy.
Now days diesel pumps are right there with the gas pumps and you have gas car
people pulling into the line where the diesel pumps are rather than pulling to
the lines where there are no diesel pumps causing diesel drivers to wait. In
the meantime nobody is in line at all at the gas only islands.

Notably, the fuel filler on my 1997 Dodge (w/Cummins) will accept the large
nozzle.
I've filled up at those islands many a time. My dad's 1990 Ford could not.

The Dodge T-Rex (not to be confused with the TRX) would have qualified,
if made in diesel. Sadly, never made it to production!

I hade to fuel my 300D at a truck pump once. It was an odd little gas station
in some rural area and the only diesel they had was at a truck pump. Definitely
fills the tank quickly. The cashier was a little surprised to see a diesel sale
of less than 20 gallons.

In a word, no. However, if it were possible, you would be using extra fuel to
drag the extra axle around, thereby causing more noxious emissions, also
negating your "green" status.

87E10 is 4.259 here in Olivet, 4.319 in Charlotte. At least I hope it's

2022-05-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The auto box or the larger size of the Passat is seriously hurting mileage.
Last week to PA and back my Jetta consistently turned in 51+mpg. We took it
fairly easy on the way down but I flogged it on the way back. IIRC on the way
down we did 51.7 on the way back it was more like 51.2. Traffic was pretty
heavy both ways.

This summer I'd like to run it up north and see what 2 hours (Bangor to
Houlton, Maine) at 65mph would give.

A gasoline Jetta with the 1.4 engine gets ~34mpg mixed, probably better on the

42mpg with fuel at $5.19 would be 12.3 cents/mile. So there's no fuel cost
savings driving a diesel any more. The higher energy content of the diesel fuel
has been factored into the price.

I don't think any marque is offering diesel passenger cars in the USA any more.
We can probably thank VW for that. GM killed the passenger diesel engine in the
late 1970s/early 1980s, and VW killed whatever recovery there had been with
their emissions cheats.

I still like my OM617s for their simplicity and reliability but would never buy
a new diesel with all the blue tech crap. They cost more, won't save any money
on fuel and are more prone to problems.

The only sensible reason to buy a new diesel today is in a truck where you need
the torque for towing or hauling heavy loads.
