Maybe not while it happens - but it would be pretty hard to drive

How about a sign that says "The owner of this property is armed and
prepared to defend with deadly force" and a big picture of your cat.

The cost of such a system might exceed the cost of repair of the bumper,

I guess our taxes are good for something, had a local police officer in about
fifteen minutes. He took a quick look around, no visible securel security
cameras, offered to give me the full report to file with my insurance, I
declined as I don't carry full collison coverage.

Speaking of my E300, I think I need to get some photos of the entire car
and post them and you all tell me if you think its even worth me
replacing the door and getting it painted. I did notice today it did
damage the area behind the rear door and the wheel arch.

I figure if the starter cables are of proper factory size and they
get hot, you're drawing serious AMPS, and need to look to the power
consumer, not the power source, for your trouble.
Kinda a catch-22. If you spend the money for a decent clamp-on DC
ammeter, you have acquired a device that is adequate to measure low
ohms. Still, I like DC clamp-on's, but consumer grade ones are flaky.
Adding enough ohms to measure the resistance with a Harbor Freight
multimeter causes it' own

It usually takes two people, but you should take a voltmeter and
connect it between the center post (not the cable clamp) of the
battery + and the starter motor's
motor locked up?

A solenoid click followed by dimming lights and warm or hot battery
cables is a locked up starter motor, the typical failure mode on these
engines. I've replaced two so far (different cars) -- they crank slow
for a day or two, then lock up solid.
There is no alternative to replacement.

You're really going to enjoy getting to the starter on that thing in the
