Well I'm back to working on the enigmatic overheating '78 240D. I removed the
water pump a few weeks ago to inspect it. Nothing obviously wrong with it. It
was installed with both the paper/fiber gasket and a gasket sealer. Is this
recommended? Should I also use both or just the fiber/paper
Did we discuss the fan clutch?

I think you are only supposed to use the paper gasket. But I always put
a little Permatex on it anyway, which makes it a bit more of a bother to
clean off next time, but that is in the future...

if it leaks. I use the permatex family of products because that's what my
