We had friends over and made it all the way to 12. Yesterday we replaced the
manifold on the Pisten Bully (MB content). I was feeling it and took a long nap
afterward.
We got the new manifold in but need a piece of 3" flex pipe to finish the
exhaust. The old exhaust was terribly rotted, had to replace like 2 feet of
pipe but now the folks running the machine shouldn't get asphyxiated anymore.

2020-01-01 Thread Clay via Mercedes
I shoveled a half foot of snow off the drive (hubris) so that when the boy
child came back from new year party with his buds, a frozen mound of ice were
not created. I had spend most of the day (280*K) scraping the last of the
rather large and wide ice tracks created a number of weeks ago when somebody
drove into the garage without clearing the snow.

Made it to bed with around 0120. Woke to another five inches on the ground.
Will use the snow thrower to deal with that, as college boy child is not prone
to snow removal.

All of which are distortions of a time ball, a time reference for
ship navigators.

In the days of chronometer as the means of figuring longitude -
but before the days of radio, the major shipping ports would have
a structure with a tower and a ball that could drop. This was to
allow the ships within sight to synchronize their chronometers to
reference time before departing.

The ball would be raise 5 min before the time mark, and on the
time mark it would be dropped. Not lowered slowly - but the
usually 10 m/s^2 of gravity. The beginning of the ball moving was
the reference point in time. 12:00 and 13:00 were both common time
marks, mostly depending on the country.

As radios became prevalent, the need for time balls passed.

There! I suspect most of you have now learned something new this

It will be the only grass cutting for January, probably. However, with all the
rain we got over the past week or so, maybe not.

Didn’t have to cut it in December. It’s not unusual to only cut once a month in
the “winter”, if that.

Beautiful day today. Clear skies, lows in the 50s, highs in the 70s, no
humidity. This is Florida winter, and it’s glorious.

Sorry.

Re: [MBZ] Happy new year

2020-01-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Wife went to our farmer’s market to buy a beef tenderloin prior to Xmas so I
could make a nice roast for Christmas dinner. They were out of tenderloins, so
rather than come home empty handed, she bought a ribeye. A WHOLE (12 lbs!)
ribeye.

I had to explain to her when she got home that cooking a 12 pound hunk of meat
like this would take hours, if not days, and wasn’t really suited for such
things. That and there would only be six of us for dinner, not 20 or 30.

So I’m breaking it out this afternoon with the meat saw and we’ll have some
nice ribeye steaks for dinner. I’ll freeze the rest for future consumption.

MB content - I got my third garage clear of crap and was able to park the S210
in it. It’s very happy to be inside again. Should be able to make space in the
remaining portion of the garage for the wife’s car later today if I’m so
inclined. Gotta go over to the old house and cut the grass first.

In Flagstaff they lower a pinecone from an old hotel balcony. In Prescott, the
lower a cowboy boot from a flagpole on a bar’s roof.
A flip-flop at the redneck Riviera seems reasonable.

SWMBO and SWMBette wanted to go to Folly Beach tonight, about 45 minutes drive
to a Redneck Riviera. We drove out to arrive about five minutes to midnight,
watched the Flip Flop Drop (think giant flip flops made from Christmas tree
lights, suspended then slowly dropped from a ladder fire truck). Escaped as
quickly as we arrived (parked illegally on a sidewalk right up close to the
action, made for an easy get away), popped some bubbly once we got back to the
hacienda. In, out, and nobody got hurt.

Easily. CAT5 uses 24 AWG wire which typically rated for 3.5 A.
That's 3500 ma. A standard LED is setup with 20 ma current, but
the extra bright ones can use more.

It is heat that kills LEDs, so try to put the lamps in a
location that can dissipate heat. If you put them in the same
location as the mantels, it should to well.

Most LEDs are quite directional, so watch out for that. The
mantel they are replacing is very much _not_ directional.

2011-12-31 Thread Curt Raymond
I'm home tonight with a cold.

Sat around all day with no energy at all, tonight I'm full of piss and vinegar,
for about 5 minutes. Soon as I start to do something I run flat...

I'm going to spend my evening trying to convert a Coleman lantern that has a
holey tank into an electric. The top side of the tank is beautiful shiny
nickle, the underside is a mass of flaking rust. Can't adequately repair it
because remember it lives with pressure (like 40psi) in the tank and a leak
could be a disaster.

I'm trying to make all the electrics hidden. I have a couple of the LED dash
bulbs to use for light, a push button switch will hide in the valve, the
charging port will be under the fuel cap, the cleaning rod will switch between
high which will have both bulbs lit and low which will have only one.

Hoping to have the project done and looking nice for the International Coleman
Convention in Lake George at the end of June. Tonight's goal is to make light
and find out if the wires inside Cat5 cable are thick enough to power the LEDs.

Why not? Because of the hurricanes? That actually worked out great for my
parents. They had flood insurance and it cost them only $319 a year - at least
it cost that much before Katrina. This year, I think they paid $700/year.
When Katrina hit, they had 7 feet of water on the first floor. The maximum
coverage at the time was $250,000. The USAA adjuster was at their house within
7 days. He looked around and said, yep. You'll get the maximum. They had a
check for $250,000 in days. They also had water damage on the second floor
because the chimney collapsed and they had wind/water damage on the second
floor. They got another check for almost $100,000. They acted as their own
contractor, rebuilt the house and pocketed a bunch of money. The house is now
much nicer - granite countertops, fancy brazilian hard wood floors and much
upgraded fixtures. The house was only 5-6 years old when Katrina hit and it is
now worth nearly $200,000 more than it was before. Katrina was awful, but if
you had flood insurance it wasn't too bad. Property values for nicer homes has
actually increased because people still want to live there and if a house
received no flood damage or has been completely rebuilt it is worth more.
I am sure that homes along the beach have decreased, but they live in an area
that had never gotten any water damage until Katrina. Plus, they are on a
bayou on 50 yards behind their house.
