Once you finish, I'll swap you for my wagon (if your Wife will allow you
to drive a chick-magnet) so you can do that one properly, and I'll make
sure your tires are properly balanced out on I-95.

Wilton - you're way ahead of me. Since I have the '95 'project'
occupying one garage space, my wagon has been parked outside under an
oak tree; the sap, leaves, acorns, etc take their toll, and I've only
been able to wash/wax the car twice this year. I insisted on taking
the
time to wash/wax just before this trip, knowing that a dirty car on
such
a long trip would drive me nuts not to mention embarrassment if I
happened to meet up with a fellow MB enthusiast along the way. Sadly
the car may not get such attention for another six months or so.

Nice visit with Max and his family yesterday inspired/shamed me to
take
better care of the paint on my arctic white, nearly-showroom 87 300D.
I
was a bit embarrassed for them to see it in dire need of a proper
cleaning and waxing. Yes, I've been a back-slider. 'Been running it
through carwash and wiping it down with towel afterward, but I haven't
really cleaned and waxed it properly in the 6+ years I've had it, so,
though the paint still has no nicks, gouges, scratches, dents, dings,
rust, etc., it has been looking quite flat for too long. I've spent
about three hours so far today working on the rear section from rear
doors aft; all of that area is now pristine and glistening - even the
six years of exhaust film across the back has been removed (again,
this
is a WHITE car), and that area is white again - not light grey. I can
get to much of it sitting on my walker; 'have to stand only to get to
the higher horizontal surfaces and can touch or lean against the car
for
 more stability.

BTW, 'discovered a neat trick to keep white cleaner/wax film off the
black trim areas; painters blue masking tape on those areas works
beautifully. 'Had the roll of tape in the trunk after painting a
small
area on the left rear door of the black 350SDL coupla weeks ago.

Thanks, but I guess I'll just have to continue to be lonely and tough it out
in my mere sedan, and I already know my tires are properly balanced - even
tested on I-95 but not at 100 mph; well enough, though. BTW, I never
noticed the chick-magnet effect when I had coupla station wagons, 'course,
they were a lowly Pontiac and a Chrysler. Oh, wait! Yes, they were, too; I
often also had two mighty fine looking blonde women riding with me - one was
even a strawberry blonde (now white-headed and sitting at the kitchen table
reading the paper).  I guess the magnets worked OK, anyway.   ;

The painter's tape is a great idea. I like it!

If it's after the fact, you can use a regular eraser (the pink wedge-shaped
ones) to get the white crud/wax off of black trim items.

'Been running it through carwash and

 three hours so far today
working on the rear section from rear doors aft; all
 of that area is now
pristine and glistening - even the six years of
 exhaust film across the back
has been removed (again, this is a WHITE car), and
 that area is white again
  - not light grey.  I can get to much of it
sitting on my walker; 'have to
stand only to get to the higher horizontal surfaces
 and can touch or lean
against the car for more stability.

BTW, 'discovered a neat trick to keep white
 cleaner/wax film off the black
trim areas; painters blue masking tape on those areas
 works beautifully.
'Had the roll of tape in the trunk after
painting a small area on the left
rear door of the black 350SDL coupla weeks ago.

Re: [MBZ] Inspiration

2010-11-06 Thread WILTON
Thanks; I'll use the eraser on a 6-inch section I whited before I realized
I had the tape right there in the trunk.

BTW, rear section of the car is so slippery now that I think I can feel a
bit of boost thrust as the air slips downward, around and off that area.

The painter's tape is a great idea. I like it!

If it's after the fact, you can use a regular eraser (the pink wedge-shaped
ones) to get the white crud/wax off of black trim items.

It really is a lot of work to give a
car a proper clean and wax, but don't
they look amazing after the work is done! I often do
the cars in sections
too, and doing the whole go at once is often too time
consuming. Good trick
with the painters tape. I've used it too. The
911 has lots of black rubber
trim, against a darker paint. The dried wax on the
trim can make the
finished product look like a mess, but the tape works
wonders! Saves a lot
of messing about with toothbrushes! ;-)

Good tip to know too. The biggest pain for me, is trying to avoid the seal
around the sunroof while applying wax. I try to say a quarter inch away
from it, but that unwaxed quarter inch kinda bugs me at times!

I forget who it was who used to wax their race cars with Pledge in the
pits. But when asked once, if he found the wax made the cars more slippery
and gained him any advantage in top end speed, he replied, No, but it makes
them smell nice.
