I keep waiting for someone to develop a bioreactor fuel source. Oh wait - I
think that is called a horse. But one without all the balky tendencies and
with a smaller package would be nice.

Are you believing there is an engine under there somewhere?

Makes me want an OM621, or a 1940 vintage Shovey 6 cyl, or a frod 300

[MBZ] New Mercedes Diesel

2007-10-18 Thread LarryT
Hello,
Was reading about the new Diesel on the MB website and they talk about
new piezoelectric fuel injectors which contribute to the efficiency of the
engine.

I'm trying to understand how the piezoelectric concept helps the
injectors? I read Wikipaedia and it says Piezioelectric is the ability of
some materials (notably crystals and certain ceramics) to generate an
electric potential and while I understand what they are saying (sort of),
I can't grasp how it helps fuel injectors.

Previous injectors were controlled by electrical pulses from the ECU as
I understand it - but I can't see how the Piezio effect would be better.

Can someone provide a easily understood paragraph or 2?

BTW, the new diesel is now available in the E Class, ML, GL and R class.
While I cannot afford a new MB perhaps in a few years I can find a nice used
one.

Thx -

They respond (open and close) much faster, allowing more control of the
injection cycle.

Re: [MBZ] New Mercedes Diesel/Piezio

2007-10-18 Thread JFreezn

Piezio to me was: hit a rock, generate a spark. This would be the
opposite; provide a spark will move a valve, a glorified solenoid valve.
These
electronic injectors are so quick that they permit 3 to 5 firings per power
stroke, which controls the severity of the flame front travel and gets more
power
while reducing the noise level and emissions.

They respond (open and close) much faster, allowing more control of the
injection cycle.

Thx Jim -
Excellent explanation. Now I understand why Piezio is the best way to
drive an injector.

That's quite a leap forward.

2007-10-18 Thread OK Don
Re: Piezioelectric is the ability of some materials (notably

The material has two modes - if you apply pressure or deform it, it
will generate electricity, per the article. However, if you apply
electricity to it, it will deform, or move. Hence, you can use it to
very quickly open and close a valve
