Re: [MBZ] OT: Working the system

2021-12-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A friend worked for a fish farm, they used Ryobi for everything because they
were cheap and were only going to get ruined when they got dropped into the
fish tank.
Most of the big brands are owned by 2 or 3 companies. The company that owns
Milwaukee also owns Rigid and Ryobi for instance. Stanley Black and Decker also
owns Dewalt and Porter Cable and Craftsman. I don't think that there is really
all that much difference between the brands.

One of the reasons I bought Makita is that they are self owned, not a zombie
brand...

That's for sure.  The (just finished) carport project involved 600
self-drilling screws.  Possible with a drill but only with considerable
pressure.  Stepson's Makita drill-driver was the cat's meow for these.

The small impact is wy better for driving screws than a drill, especially
for Phillips head.I use mine a lot for light mechanicing too. Especially
switching Dad's lawn tractor from mower to snowblower. It's got a spring assist
on the lift and dialing the tension on the spring takes forever with a wrench,
it's easy peasy with that little impact.

[MBZ] OT: Working the system

2021-12-02 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've got a credit card with rewards points, one of the ways to spend the points
is to get Home Depot gift cards at 10% off. So you get $100 worth of gift cards
for $90 worth of points. I've been using the cards to buy tools, including the
paint sprayer I used on the house up north.
Anyway yesterday I checked out their website and found a Makita circular saw
with 2 batteries and double battery charger plus a "free" tool for a price I
thought was okay. I put it in the card but didn't finish the transaction. Today
they send me a reminder, I check it out and its the same deal minus almost $100.
If you think I jumped on that you're right. 7 1/4" circular saw, 2 4a
batteries, and a 4 1/2" angle grinder for $250. I can pick it up in Keene and
not pay any sales tax. We usually do dinner in Keene at least once a week
anyway.
I'd been considering both tools anyhow so this seemed like a good way to get
them.
