Great article!

Sounds like a winning scale-up candidate, although one wonders about the
energy balance since methanol and KOH are required, and each consumes energy
in the manufacturing process...

Oh, and back to the matter at hand, our little community in Mass had
some sort of composting program going on with leaves and grass and

After the first rain all the good stuff washed away and what was left

I was out there with my shop vac vacuuming the lawn after it dried out.

I am still waiting for input regarding a good business model for creating a
100 percent safe and effective municipal composting program solely for the
 region's restaurants and coffee shops.

You've gotten what you paid for.

Seriously, if it were so easy that someone could formulate a business
plan for recycling coffee grounds for profit, in response to an email
posting on a Mercedes-Benz discussion list, well then I guess someone
would already be doing it.

The fact that nobody is already doing it means either:

 a) You've hit on a really unique idea.
 b) Others have already considered the concept and concluded there's no
money to be made (note that does not necessarily mean it's a bad idea,
you might have an approach that nobody else considered).

It's a great model, you just have to find the right market. Small
Caribbean countries that lack good topsoil and sewage infrastructure
would be very appreciative of someone stepping up to organize an
effort like this. Unfortunately, the US comes in about dead last in
the world when it comes to implementing green ideas.

I'm jumping in late here, so not sure what's been talked about. We have
green boxes here. Well, we have every known colour of box set out on the
kirbside. lol. Green is for compost. Lot of ppl here with gardens, will
still throw the easy compost stuff in their own composter. We have to mulch
our grass too, no collecion of that. As for leaf collecion, that is all
composted on a big scale, as is stuff from the collecion of green boxes,
which will contain veg matter, and also paper with oil, such as pizza trays
etc.

As for you trying to get something going from restaurants, maybe try to sign
up the easy places first, coffee shops, as you've done, and vegitarian
places, so you don't have to worry so much about seperating out old meat
products.

Here, the city offers back for free (well, we pay for it with taxes, nothing
the government offers is free!) all the stuff it composted, just bring your
own bags. Landscapers not included.

Not sure from a business perspective how it would work. Do you plan to sell
the end product? Maybe give the restaurants a cut of the profit? Maybe
like used cooking oil, not just take it for free, but pay them. Again,
composting is done on a big scale here, so not sure how scaleable it is.
Easy to do in your back garden, and easy when the city does it and forces
everyone to play by rules, AND, they have the taxpayers dollars to cover the
start up cost, which are substantial at first.

Anyway, I love that American spirit of coming up with new ideas, and turning
them into successful money making ventures.

Best of luck,

I'm sure there's a way to make money out of pretty much anything. Our local
Zoo would collect the droppings from the larger animals, elephants etc and
sell it as Zoo Poo. lol. No kidding, the stuff was about $3.00 for a 5lb
bag!!

If you have access to coffee grinds from all your local Starbucks, maybe
rather than just composting, you can turn it into an end product, and attach
a price to it for your effort. Maybe a natural weekly drain maintainer.
Leave a nice coffee smell too. lol

I'm up in Toronto, where they arel trying to soon ban plastic coffee lids on
paper coffee cups. Plastic shopping bags are on the hit list too and will
probably soon be gone, or you'll have to pay for them. The local wine shop
(it's all controlled via the gov) banned plastic bags about a year ago, so
we're back to paper ones, and boxes. Probably won't have any trees left in
a few years with the demand for paper now! lol

How about calling your business Global Warming-R-Us? You see, composting
will release more CO2, which according to Al Gore (let's take a momement to say

bears and sinking Pacific islands and allowing Brits to grow decent wine grapes

2008-11-30 Thread Tom Hargrave
Yep, composting releases the dreaded CO2 gas into the air. But so does
breathing passing gas!

So, I have a suggestion for this global warming mess - let's all of us not
eat pinto beans, broccoli or other gassy food for one year. The CO2
emissions saved by not passing gas should have a huge impact on the total
atmospheric CO2 concentration!

We also need to install butt plugs on dairy cows...

Thanks,
