A lot of the trades people that drive these chip them for more power.
Ultimately, the head bolts stretch if one does that. Whenever the shop

If you leave the engine stock, it is much less likely to have those issues.

Yup. Any cylinder head removal on an newer Ford truck requires removal of the
cab. That, and the spark plug woes of the 2000's 5.4 engine made for some
innovative tool design.

I think Randy is correct on all points. The gas engines available today are so
powerful, fuel efficient and long-lived the advantages of a diesel are
considerably less than they used to be.
Last night I hauled the dirty old Ferd to Maine. 4,000# tractor on what is
probably a 1,000# trailer. Dodge RAM 1500, 5.7l hauled it no problem. 390HP, it
did hold in 4th (5spd automatic) to pull hills but I never felt like I couldn't
accelerate.
3/4 ton and heavier trucks need more expensive tires too, like twice the money.
Insurance and tax will be more too...

maintenance is high given the amount of oil they require and the cost of
fuel filters etc. If you avoid the routine service, then you have more

Re: [MBZ] Price Of Fuel

2021-05-11 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

A fellow in the retail petroleum business says:

If people didn’t panic buy like morons. Everyone would en fine.

The choke point isn’t the pipelines or lack there of.

It’s trucks and drivers. There is not spare capacity in trucking right
now. So over buying means it just can’t be delivered.

I’ve said this in like 5 other threads. Kinder Morgan PPL line has more
than enough capacity. Let alone tankers coming out of Jacksonville or
Tampa. Or if you’re in Mississippi or around MS, you have Ergon, Hunt
refining, and Chevron.

In TN you have Citgos refinery.

There’s plenty of fuel. Just not enough trucks. Chill on the panic
buying morons. Especially if you’re not in an affected state.

I have seen news today of Carter-esque gas lines and stations with no fuel.

Time to get the national guard tanker fleet on the road? Is there one?

Can refined gasoline be transported by rail or is that considered too dangerous?

The latest crisis to not go to waste?

Re: [MBZ] Price Of Fuel

2021-05-10 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
You want some real thorns? New Zealand has gorse fields that are literally
impenetrable.

"Its introduction resulted in large spreading infestations over hundreds of
hectares, peaking in the late 1940s. It was recognised as a threat as early
as 1861 where the Provincial Council in Nelson passing an act to prevent
the planting of gorse hedges. The seed can lie dormant on the ground for up
to 50 years, germinating quickly after the adults have been removed.
Unfortunately, most methods of removing adult gorse plants, such as burning
or bulldozing them, create the ideal conditions for the gorse seeds to
germinate and total eradication with current technology seems impossible.
Gorse is now one of the most widely recognised agricultural weeds in New
Zealand. It covers 700,000 hectares (1,700,000 acres) at varying densities
— a total of 5% of the land area of New Zealand when excluding existing
indigenous forest, vegetated sub-alpine and alpine areas.Gorse became New
Zealand's most costly weed to control, an estimated $22 million per annum
by the early 1980s."

2021-05-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Using Baltimore as a benchmark it's nearly 800 miles from the great northern
estate in Caribou.
We've got some pretty great thorns up north too. Last fall I shot a partridge
in a hedgerow and then realized that I couldn't get to it. I don't know what
the bushes are but they've got 1" long thorns that are just vicious. I ended up
crawling 50 feet on my belly each way to retrieve the bird.
Now I'm debating, on the one hand, the bush hog will make short work of those
thorns. On the other, if the birds like the thorn bush maybe I should keep it...

Boeing, flying windows into the ground.

Oil out of AK is still sitting just under $70. Maybe the price will creep up
now that there is less fuel making its way to the Mid-Atlantic. Probably not.
Bakken remains reasonable. West TX the same. Could see a replay of the oil
mess of last May. Fuel prices rise, while crude backs up into tanks

Re: [MBZ] Price Of Fuel

That would resolve a host of issues for the cruise ship industry. AK is going
to have a massive bust if the boats full of tourist fail to show up for yet
another year. Thing were just starting to look up after six years of
recession, and then the current plague sucked a massive number of jobs in
tourism out with the tides. Canada does not allow boats to transit or dock, so
anybody getting on a boat in Seattle, with Jones act dead, would be most
welcome in GWN. Not sure how much more transport of goods northbound would
make for better living there as well.

Then again, the boats heading south are pretty much deadheading garbage/trash
and recycling. Not much of commercial value otherwise.

Excellent points.
Imagine if all the Bombers built at Willow Run Plant were built by Windows
based computers...
Heck, we would be speaking German along with everyone else in the "New

And, the Windows computers would still be rebooting from the latest crash.

Seems to me, it's time to employ people to do things, instead of putting
them out of work with machines that can be hacked or crash.

With the east coast pipeline shut down, a state of emergencey has been
declared, waiving the hours of service limits for tanker trucks so
that fuel can be trucked in.

https://www.transportationnation.com/h-o-s-suspended-for-fuel-haulers-in-18-states-after-cyber-attack-forces-major-pipeline-to-shut-down/

You're probably set to make a nice bit of income if you are an
owner/operator with a tanker endorsement.

Re: [MBZ] Price Of Fuel

2021-05-09 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
With the east coast pipeline shut down, a state of emergencey has been
declared, waiving the hours of service limits for tanker trucks so
that fuel can be trucked in.

https://www.transportationnation.com/h-o-s-suspended-for-fuel-haulers-in-18-states-after-cyber-attack-forces-major-pipeline-to-shut-down/

You're probably set to make a nice bit of income if you are an
owner/operator with a tanker endorsement.

As someone involved in the security side of things, I am aware of this
incident, which was due to a ransomeware attack. These exploit the ignorance of
humans to be successful, which is the weakest part of the whole system. If we
relied solely on hardware and software solutions for security we would be far
better off. When the human element is factored in, all bets are off.

You can’t imagine the stupid, idiotic stuff people do or get coerced to do. I
see this stuff all the time, and it never ceases to amaze me.

If I get the right person to respond to my efforts, I’m in and ready to wreak

In a case like this, the best thing to do is completely shut down and start
methodically bringing things up with trusted/clean hardware and images. It
takes time, but I assume this is what the transmission line folks are doing.

I'm seeing that industries across the board have built themselves a
particular vulnerability by running their entire operations via computers.
The number and scope of such attacks have increased, yet, the weakness of
your entire operation, delivery of product, and profit is all tied to a
computer system that is vulnerable to attack.
To my way of thinking, this has evolved into utterly stupid, and it is now
every industry, not just one.

Someone, somewhere, can remotely turn off your comfortable life, and stop
the supply of goods, or services.
But... hey... nothing to worry about because everyone is good... right?
