He’s been in the pickup truck mode for a while, but balks at considering
anything domestic for some unknown reason. As I’ve mentioned before, a decent
used domestic truck like a Ford, Chevy or Dodge would be ideal, as there would
be no problem at all finding support for them in such a remote
Got it. How about a Jeep Wrangler ?

rugged, extremely rural. Not tooling around on improved roads much of the time.
No service facilities or a place to work on it should something break.

Why? My brother uses a 1989 w124 300TE non 4matic as a “work truck” and it’s
one tough car. 330K miles, engine needs valve guides but he keeps driving it
and adding oil, cleaning/replacing fouled plugs as needed.

This time it was an aesthetics and functionality thing. He likes the simplicity
and the styling of the W124, but thinks he can off road with 4Matic.
I suggested a W210 4Matic, as they’re far more common, less expensive, and more
reliable and easier to maintain. I pointed out that the original
I hauled a lot of construction materials (including 80BF of dirty rough sawn
cherry) in my mint interior 1999 4matic.
Interior was far from mint after I had it a month.
Only real problems I ever had with that car were dead fuel pump (inline and
easy to swap), rusty brake lines, and HVAC
Thanks, Mitch. I messaged the link to him. I’m guessing he won’t follow up on
it, there may already be a new “flavor of the week” at this point, haven’t
heard.
At least I was able to talk him out of a W124 wagon with 4Matic. He had some
idea that it would be a good alternative to a 4WD pickup

I thought the "Hi-Lux" was just the non-US name for "pickup". I
suppose the US market pickups got different engine and trim and
stuff, especially in recent years.
I was gonna comment that he might be able to find one in the sandbox for
cheap, but getting it in the country would be a problem.
