Just wanted to say thanks to all who responded to this question about my
shorting aux fan. To answer Marshalls question, it does turn very freely. I
will update this thread as I make more headway on the problem.

On my '83 300D Turbo it was behind the front apron, just to the rear of
one of the horns. There was a
Levi mentioned a service bulletin on running a larger wire with larger fuse,
can anyone give any insight into this ? It would be a bummer to get a new fan
only to find out that the extra draw is actually coming from the blower motor.
What if I find that the fan does in fact draw more than it
If it's the same as my setup on my 83' 300D, the aux fan is on it's own fuse
as I recall. The blower motor is on with the AC compressor clutch and maybe
another item or two.
Here was the message I got from Marshall a while ago. Seems like there was
another one with more about the wiring and
hi David!
thanks; that's what i was hoping. i'd followed all the exposed harness
back to where it gets lost in the tangle, but figured it was probably
hidden somewhere like that.
cheers!

On further reflection it may have been forward of the horn, not behind;

Hello All,
I posted about this in the past and haven't really figured out how to approach
it. I am not sure how to track down the short or to determine if the fan is
bad. I have a volt meter and the schematic for the car. A few people made
comments, one that this car may go through a few
You should be able to test the fan by simply hooking up 12v directly to the
connector. You can either run wires from the battery, or get another power
source like an non-smart battery charger or a jump-start pack, etc.
If it started and then blew the fuse, it sounds like it's at the upper limit

Follow the cord from the motor. As I recall, it goes along one of the
support braces, the connector is perhaps right behind the radiator bracket?
Somewhere in that vicinity...
