Re: [MBZ] worst place on earth to drive - was: OM617 head
I was in Saudi Arabia in the late 70's on a Natural Gas Project and found some interesting aspects of local highway driving. I was told the Muslim drivers would pass on hills and curves and leave their continued existance in the hands of Allah - don't know if true of not but I saw a *lot* of passing on hills and curves. Also was told there was a lot of eye disease among the indigent people that came from all the sand flying all the time (which was not in doubt) so a lot of drivers did not have great eyesight - especially at night. Another common story was the locals believed the right-of-way was bestowed on who ever had the largest vehicle. Hence the locals liked to drive the big trucks so they'd have the maximum right-of-way. Interesting concept. We also heard about foreigners always getting blamed for all accidents because if they hadn't been there the accident would not have occurred - so naturally it was the foreigners fault. There was also a story of a Westerner stopping at an accident and upon seeing a Saudi woman not breathing he removed her from the car and applied resusitation which aved her life. The story went that he was arrested and taken to jail for assaulting a Saudi woman. Seems hard to believe but after seeing hands hanging in the middle of the main town square (as a warning to potential theives) some things became easier to believe. One thing I found interesting was passing little settlements for lack of a better word out in the desert - there's be a dozen or so large wodden shipping containers like those large equipment was shipped in with doors and windows cut into them and TV antennas attached and a MB or Chev. Suburban (remember the big vehicle and right-of-way thing?) out front - never any Fords because they believed Ford was owned by Jewish investors. Seems they aren't aware of the publicly owned business concept. ;-) Lots of other things went on - but they have nothing to do with Mercedes. ;-) Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs Porsche Road Test http://members.rennlist.com/roadtest/ . - Original Message - From: Potter, Tom E [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, September 25, 2006 3:02 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] worst place on earth to drive - was: OM617 head Man, does Jeff have it right! I read in a motorcycle magazine that the fastest moving vehicle gets the ROW in Italy. Factory test riders from Bimota pass wherever they want. If there's oncoming traffic, it can just move into the ditch. You can't pay me enough to get me to set foot in a Wahhabi hellhole, especially Saudi Arabia. I'd sooner visit England. Unfortunately, their international charitable works include muslim education, so the worst of the Wahhabi attitudes are spreading fast, even in America. It seems like Saudi Arabia produces more Imams than Israel produces Rabbis. http://www.lauramansfield.com/j/smalltownusa.asp Mitch.

The MA states (MD and Mass.) have the worst drivers - no contest. Nobody even comes close. Check out the insurance rates. I know this may come as a shock to you nice people in the US of A but there are motorists outside of the USA. Perhaps the title of the post should be worst place in the US to drive. Then again perhaps it is right. I agree with Hendriknone of those bad drivers would last ten seconds in Cairo or Tehran. In Tehran, not only do they not bother with lanes or stoplight colours, they don't even care what SIDE of the road they use! Not to mention the sidewalks! Ever feeling suicidal, try crossing the roads there as a pedestrian. lol Jeff Zedic Toronto

Re: [MBZ] worst place on earth to drive - was: OM617 head
No Kidding, Many years ago I drove a bus in Los Angeles, I thought that was a hectic as it could get, but I used to see a buddy regularly and he always looked like he was on vacation, turned out he had spent 15 years doing local delivery in a semi...in Mexico City! LA traffic really was a vacation for him. That said after driving commercially nationwide, Albuquerque NM has definitely got the worst drivers in the country, not only technically bad but crazy at the same time. Kansas City is by far the most relaxed place in the country to drive, even in rush hour, everyone drives consistent speed and roads are well marked at regular intervals making finding your way simple. NYC is the most fun, the drivers are aggressive, but very skilled. Remarkably few accidents and rarely more than 2 vehicles involved when it happens. I used to actually enjoy driving through there in an oversized semi! Traffic lights and lines in the road mean nothing, sidewalks are fair game, the only rule is to get from point A to point B without hitting anything :-) You haven't lived until you've run that racecourse in something 75 ft long and 8.5 ft wide in morning rush hour. Short track racing is an adrenalin let down after that. -Robert Jeff Zedic wrote: I agree with Hendriknone of those bad drivers would last ten seconds in Cairo or Tehran.
