I have a ’83 240D 4-speed manual, 300+++ miles. The shifter is loose and
occasionally feels completely disconnected and will not go into any gear. It
also locked up in neutral and would not move in any direction. In between
these episodes it works normally. What is going on?
Thank You.

Jaime,
Thank you, this is the explanation I was hoping for. I guess I’d need to get
under the car to do this? I don’t have a safe way to do that, may need to take
it to a shop (there is a good one near here). Can the shifter bushings be
replaced from inside the car?

I did not try to fix the 4-speed shifter, the local mbz mechanic fixed one of
the rod ends and thinks it’s OK. I would like to find a 4 speed shifter to
replace the worn out one in the car. Does anyone know where I can find one?

The shifter is loose and the reverse lockout is gone. The mechanic doesn’t
want to take the shifter apart because it will make the car unmovable unless
you push it. I’d like to get a shifter and rebuild it and then switch them.
The problem is now finding a shifter.

Rick, That is not unreasonable, I’ll try to find a shifter first then that. He
has a lot of work and likes to choose what he wants to do.

have him install new bushings, help him push the car back in, reinstall the
Hello Everyone,
When I turn the key on my ’83 240D the glow plug light goes on as usual but it
does not go off after 10 seconds or so as it used to. When I turn over the
engine it doesn’t even try to start. It seems that the glow plugs never turned
on. Is there a relay or fuse that is the no
Thank you all for the great replies to my questions. I knew I would get the
benefit of all your experience. I will start testing. Since the dashboard
indicator light goes on this indicates the fuse is good. Looks like I need to
get the relay.
There also is the push button relay kit from Merce
Hello Everyone,
I went out to the car and searched for the fuse and finally found it inside the
cover on top of the relay. I hope it is the right fuse because it was blown
and came out in two pieces. It is just a steel band and looks like the fuses
in the on-line websites. The only lettering
Hello Everyone,
I had a vacuum problem with my 240D. The car would not shut doff unless the
rear drivers side door was locked. It would not automatically lock when the
drivers door was locked. If I pushed down the lock and let the vacuum build
back up the car would turn off normally. I repla
Thank you all for your replies!
Last evening I ended up plugging the two vacuum tubes that go to the door lock
mechanism. Suddenly I had plenty of vacuum and everything else throughout the
system worked fine. I think the vacuum system is okay and that I got a bad
replacement part. I didn’t c
Hello Everyone,
Car is running fine with the door vacuum hoses plugged with a golf tee and the
door put back together. I tested the new door actuator and it does not work at
all, it is nothing but a vacuum leak. The part is a Mercedes Benz part (with
the star) that I think I got from the dealer
