WHAT?!? Holy cow man BTW the meat won't hurt you if either: You compost hot and fast, keep the temp over 160F for several days or Compost long and slow, leaving the meat bits in the pile for at least a year... I do the latter and figure any bad bugs have shuffled off in the intervening time. Seems to work, we compost everything and I'm still here. -Curt Date: Wed, 17 Mar 2010 15:35:17 +1030 From: Hendrik Fay heni...@ozemail.com.au To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] Hendrik and Co coming to the US of A in June Message-ID: 4ba0630d.6070...@ozemail.com.au Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Doggy bags are illegal in this nanny state, due to the potential for someone to get crook because they ate the stuff they brought home from the restaurant, five days later. Wisconsinites, also known as cheeseheads, are proud and willing consumers of such things. You'll experience things such as cheese curds, butterburgers, etc., as you travel throughout the state. A butterburger, what most would refer to as a hamburger, is really a steak sandwich, consisting of ground chuck or round made into a patty and fried on a griddle in copious amounts of butter. So much so that if it is done correctly, the butter will literally drip off of the sandwich onto your arms and/or clothing while consuming it. It is placed on a hard roll, not a bun if done correctly. Both sides of the hard roll are brushed with butter as well. It can be served with cheese (of course!) and condiments as one desires. Also, you will find that what appears to be soft serve ice cream is really frozen custard, another delicacy. This is made on site daily at Kopps and other such places (there are many!) in various flavors and served with related goodies. Once I was chosen for the 'random' search, and this was after I showed my military ID at check-in. Agent apologized as she told me the bad news, so I had plenty of time between ticket counter and TSA if I'd needed to make any adjustments (which I didn't). Another time in Rome I made the mistake of making eye contact with the extremely good looking red-headed security agent, she gave me a smile and gestured me over for a search. My wife was NOT too pleased, and much to my disappointment the security agent handed me off to her male cohort (my wife started laughing at this point) who looked in my shoes and then sent me on after I showed him the military ID. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Rich Thomas Sent: Sunday, March 07, 2010 11:03 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Hendrik and Co coming to the US of A in June So soon after 9/11 I traveled on SWA up to Dallas from Houston. Armored humvee with a .50 on top ought to be adequate. We are still working our way through all the options, the thing with Chicago is that flights to and from are cheaper than elsewhere near there. Thanks for the tips and we are wondering if we should get some guns for traveling in LA. Hendrik who doesn't like big cities LWB250 wrote: Welcome, Hendrick. Having had the pleasure of visiting Down Under several times, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how similar the two countries are in many respects. Your plan of flying to LA, staying a few days, then flying to Chicago are probably the best. Rental cars in these cities are plentiful and the market is competitive, so you could easily get a mid-sized sedan for a couple hundred $USD a week with unlimited mileage. That would allow you to wander freely without worry. As for buying a car and then selling it, well, I can just imagine the pitfalls - the main ones being establishing ownership (you're not a US citizen) and insurance (can't register/title in most states without proof of residency and insurance.) I think a rental is going to be the easiest and best way to go. Look into an international driver's license now - I used to have one when I traveled extensively for business, and it allowed me to rent a car in just about any country. Check your maps - LaCrosse is on the western edge of Wisconsin, and a long day's drive from Milwaukee or Chicago. You might want to consider using Minneapolis/St. Paul for your base of operations rather than Chicago. MSP is a wonderful city and has a lot to see and do within a short distance. It's not the thriving metropolis that Chicago is, but you could easily make a 2-3 day trip to Chicago from there without a lot of effort. Trains, while they are available, are somewhat iffy in this country. The primary rail traffic is freight, and while there are regularly scheduled passenger trains, their schedules are often compromised by freight traffic. If you land in MSP, a train trip to Chicago make a lot of sense, and would be a pleasant day trip (one way) with some very nice scenery. Public transportation in most larger cities is cheap and easy within the city centers. If you go to Chicago you will pay a premium for staying in the city, but that is offset by the proximity of so many wonderful things to see and do, not to mention the ease of getting around using public transportation. You'll definitely need a car in LA, as the public transportation there is pretty lousy, not to mention the logistics are so complex due to the size of the area. You don't want to stay around LAX, as that area is pretty nasty. Make a list of the things you want to do and see and find a place to stay based on that. Driving in LA is a real experience and can take far longer to get from point A to point B than you could ever imagine, due to the congestion. While you are probably working within a budget, treat this as if it is the only chance you will have to visit here, and make the most of it. You won't be disappointed. Even though my trips Down Under were business, I had plenty of leisure time and I made the most of it, and I am glad I did. Four years ago the food was excellent, but I've heard that might have changed. The train ride up the coast from LA to San Fran is quite scenic. Trains have scheduling problems, mostly in the areas where passenger trains yield to freight trains. I went on the Budget Car Rental site (http://www.budget.com) and found that going to the rental office at the Los Angeles airport (the other LA), renting a standard- or full-size car, picking it up on 5 June and returning on 15 June, will be $311.41 for an Aussie (it will be $244.14 for a US resident -- they do record your driver's license information). So that's $31/day. Plus gasoline costs. That is down from what it was a few years ago (which was $60 - 70/day). You could combine air travel for long distance and rent wheels locally (LA to Chicago = ~ 2000 miles or +30 hrs driving). Now that's a good suggestion. Re: [MBZ] Hendrik and Co coming to the US of A in June
Cheers Rich, we'll work something out and the train most likely has fallen off the radar apart from maybe a couple of small trips. In my experience a Benz will tell you if it is sick and needs to go to the doctor with plenty of warning and I have been around them long enough to tell if it is going to be trouble but if I can rent a half decent car for not too much money then that may be the way to go. Hendrik who would rather push a Benz than drive a Korean folding tin can Rich Thomas wrote: you can only smoke when the train is stopped You shouldn't have any problems with the train stopping, though you might have to stand out in the woods or some farmer's field to smoke. BTW, you know that the US is rather large, and those train rides (even if it all works, which I understand is somewhat problematic) it takes awhile. Rental cars are cheap enough (decline the insurance, let your own or credit card cover it) though you might have to learn to drive on the proper side of the road. But the distance aspect applies too -- I think you mapped out about 5000 miles there Bubba. Airlines fly with some frequency everywhere you want to go, though you can't smoke in the cabin (they might ask you to step outside) or most aerodromes, and rental car agencies are lined up to take your money. I think Hertz and some others don't have drop-off charges, so going between cities is not an issue. Maybe if you fly first to Claremore Oklahoma you can find your cheap Benz, and you'll be far enough away when it craps out that you won't be able to go back for a warranty claim. --R ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Au Contraire I've ridden the trains here quite a bit and legroom is not the problem. For going to NYC from Boston they are the absolute ticket, 3x as much seat and legroom as a plane while taking the same amount of time (total to get from Boston to Manhattan including waiting for the flight an a $45 cab ride from the airport) and costing roughly the same amount (the train is cheaper if you count the afore mentioned cab ride). Yeah the anti-smoking Nazis are busy down here too, little by little they impose their will and when they have had their way with the smokers they will start on the drinkers, once they are consigned to history it will be the turn of car drivers, gamblers and then meat eaters. We'll see how we go in Vegas, I really only wanna go on that roller coaster in the sky and a quick gander at the blink on the strip. New England is basically the center of the civilized world for anti-smoking meaning theres a lot of places you can't smoke but we don't get lame about it like CA does. While you're in LA don't plan on smoking ANYWHERE... Seriously. In Burbank you can't smoke within something like 500' of a window or door. Doesn't matter if its open (or capable of being opened) or not... Don't plan on smoking on the train, or in the airport, bus terminal, subway, train station or restaurant in most of the states. I believe some states, particularly in the south, will still allow smoking sections in restaurants but nowhere in the northeast still does that I know of. Good riddance too... Anyway I think Amtrak is a pretty good, relatively civilized way to travel but plan on it being at least a little slower than any reported timetable. I know nothing of Chi-town and the surround, I'm sure some of our locals (Mao and Luther) will pipe up on it. In Vegas be sure to check out the Gold and Silver Pawnshop of Pawnstars fame. Apparently there are some fantastic sub$100 rooms to be had this year at good hotels.Theres a tapas place on Paradise Blvd thats worth checking out, food gets cheaper the farther you get from the strip, Paradise is roughly parallel to the strip but 2 streets over. Renting a car in Vegas only makes sense if you're not going to be on the strip. The traffic on the strip is terrible... Cabs in Vegas are the most expensive I've ever seen (2-3x New York) every ride will cost at least $10. LA covers a huge area both good and bad. What I'd guess you really want to see is Hollywood. Theres a decent Comfort Inn just of Hollywood Blvd thats relatively inexpensive while being within walking distance for stuff like Hollywood Blvd. A car rental in LA isn't a bad idea, get one with GPS though I always have a helluva time finding the car return at LAX. LAX is by the way one of the better airports to travel through, so is Vegas although the landings in Vegas can be epic depending on the winds. We won't be traveling to Decorah, we'll leave that to my Daughter and her mates. Hendrik who also prefers the small town relaxed atmosphere Dieselhead wrote: Decorah is an unusual town, and you will like it, but not sure how much a high school age girl will like it. She will like it if she has fun with the teammates and locals, I guess. Decorah has a high percentage of Norwegians, and the downtown reflects that. It is also home to Luther College, founded as you might suspect, by the Lutheran church. In theory, 2 hours should be enough for customs, but who knows. Have a a plan B. NY to SF by train is unimaginable to me. I would go part way and get off for a day, then go on. The train doesn't really go to SF. It ends at Oakland. Chicago to Oakland is a very interesting train ride. Breaks at chicago and Salt Lake city would help, so you can get some food and a real shower. Travelling across the country by train or car will give you an appreciation of the diversity of the country. A car gives you the opportunity to meet people in the small towns along the way. That is the real USA. I like to travel and AVOID the big cities, because it is easier and you get to meet real people in any country you go to. I have spent maybe a total of 12 weeks in europe, and I can probably count the cities I have been in on my fingers. The only ones I really liked were London and Munich. But the small towns and countryside are great. I'd opt for Decorah over NYC hands down any day. The airport is a short distance away, and I can certainly offer to get you to some of your places - especially Gene Jude's for a Chicago dog - when you get here. I have no idea what the cost for car rental is here in mafia central, but I would doubt that $15 is a going rate - but I don't know. I would guess the plane ride to Chicago is the same price to LA? - do that and avoid the questions about train travel and cigarettes? You can't do cigarettes in an airplane either, can you? Car rental for a foreigner may be a bit tricky? - I don't know. Maybe I rent you a 240D for your Wisconsin escapades. Then you are free to drive to Wisconsin and Chicago however you need? I dunno anything about huge gunshops, I think thats probably a southern thing. Then don't go to LA. But if you do, personal protection (not thin latex, but blued steel) can't hurt, though in Collyfawnya I think they are a bunch of wimps who might be made uncomfortable by the thought (unless you are a gangbanger or other criminal). --R On 3/7/2010 8:56 PM, Hendrik Fay wrote: We are still working our way through all the options, the thing with Chicago is that flights to and from are cheaper than elsewhere near there. Re: [MBZ] Hendrik and Co coming to the US of A in June
So soon after 9/11 I traveled on SWA up to Dallas from Houston. Dallas Love Field is the home base of Southwest. Anyway, I was standing there at LUV waiting to get on the plane, #2 in line (cattle call, to get a good seat), and the gate agent announces, I need 2 volunteers for random searches! WTF? So I say to the guy, If someone volunteers that isn't random. Then he yells, We have our first volunteer, who's next? I ended up getting a seat in the back of the plane after doing the stupid human tricks while everyone else who was smart enough to keep their mouths shut walked past me. --R On 3/7/2010 8:48 PM, Hendrik Fay wrote: The missus is busy checking out air fares with SW air, she is watching a reality program about SW air, so she can learn to deal with all the BS at airports. $31 a day to drive a tin box of dubious quality and safety? Well it is closer to the NE than South Australia. BTW the missus informs me that we will be in LA LA land from the 1st to the 5th of June (too long for my liking but the kids have been brainwashed). That's about 2200 real Ozzie beans, does it come with a full tank of gas or as we call it Petrol. How much does it cost to buy/sell a car (taxes, stamp duty, etc)? Although by the time you add on all the extra charges a car hire company slugs you with, it starts to get pricey and when you give the car back they look it over and wanna blame all the dings and scratches, that where there before you got the thing, on you. I would avoid Dismaland like the plague, but that is just me. I did have fun one day when I was out there on business, got done early, and just went and walked around Beverly Hills and watched all the swells spend money. Another day I drove through Hollyweird, that was interesting. --R On 3/7/2010 11:02 PM, Hendrik Fay wrote: Well it is closer to the NE than South Australia.
