WHAT?!?

Holy cow man

BTW the meat won't hurt you if either:
You compost hot and fast, keep the temp over 160F for several days
or
Compost long and slow, leaving the meat bits in the pile for at least a year...

I do the latter and figure any bad bugs have shuffled off in the intervening
time. Seems to work, we compost everything and I'm still here.

it's after the Ohio joins up (about 150 miles [240 km] further

Well, there's a steam-power stern-wheel paddle excursion boat in

experience things such as cheese curds, butterburgers, etc., as you travel throughout the
state.

A butterburger, what most would refer to as a hamburger, is really a steak sandwich, consisting of
ground chuck or round made into a patty and fried on a griddle in copious amounts of butter. So
much so that if it is done correctly, the butter will literally drip off of the sandwich onto your
arms and/or clothing while consuming it. It is placed on a hard roll, not a
bun if done correctly. Both sides of the hard roll are brushed with butter as well.
It can be served with cheese (of course!) and condiments as one desires.

Also, you will find that what appears to be soft serve ice cream is really
frozen custard, another delicacy. This is made on site daily at Kopps and other such
places (there are many!) in various flavors and served with related goodies. Kopps
publishes their list of flavors of the day monthly so you know what days to go for your
favorite flavor.

Now you've got me 'pinin for Wisconsin. Dang.

Once I was chosen for the 'random' search, and this was after I showed
my military ID at check-in. Agent apologized as she told me the bad
news, so I had plenty of time between ticket counter and TSA if I'd
needed to make any adjustments (which I didn't).

Another time in Rome I made the mistake of making eye contact with the
extremely good looking red-headed security agent, she gave me a smile
and gestured me over for a search. My wife was NOT too pleased, and
much to my disappointment the security agent handed me off to her male
cohort (my wife started laughing at this point) who looked in my shoes
and then sent me on after I showed him the military ID.

Love Field is the home base of Southwest. Anyway, I was standing there
at LUV waiting to get on the plane, #2 in line (cattle call, to get a

random searches! WTF? So I say to the guy, If someone volunteers

Hendrik
who doesn't like big cities

LWB250 wrote:
Welcome, Hendrick. Having had the pleasure of visiting Down Under
several times, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how
similar the two countries are in many respects.

Your plan of flying to LA, staying a few days, then flying to
Chicago are probably the best. Rental cars in these cities are
plentiful and the market is competitive, so you could easily get a
mid-sized sedan for a couple hundred $USD a week with unlimited
mileage. That would allow you to wander freely without worry.

As for buying a car and then selling it, well, I can just imagine
the pitfalls - the main ones being establishing ownership (you're
not a US citizen) and insurance (can't register/title in most
states without proof of residency and insurance.) I think a rental
is going to be the easiest and best way to go. Look into an
international driver's license now - I used to have one when I
traveled extensively for business, and it allowed me to rent a car
in just about any country.

Check your maps - LaCrosse is on the western edge of Wisconsin, and
a long day's drive from Milwaukee or Chicago. You might want to
consider using Minneapolis/St. Paul for your base of operations
rather than Chicago. MSP is a wonderful city and has a lot to see
and do within a short distance. It's not the thriving metropolis
that Chicago is, but you could easily make a 2-3 day trip to
Chicago from there without a lot of effort.

Trains, while they are available, are somewhat iffy in this
country. The primary rail traffic is freight, and while there are
regularly scheduled passenger trains, their schedules are often
compromised by freight traffic. If you land in MSP, a train trip
to Chicago make a lot of sense, and would be a pleasant day trip
(one way) with some very nice scenery.

Public transportation in most larger cities is cheap and easy
within the city centers. If you go to Chicago you will pay a
premium for staying in the city, but that is offset by the
proximity of so many wonderful things to see and do, not to mention
the ease of getting around using public transportation.

You'll definitely need a car in LA, as the public transportation
there is pretty lousy, not to mention the logistics are so complex
due to the size of the area. You don't want to stay around LAX, as
that area is pretty nasty. Make a list of the things you want to
do and see and find a place to stay based on that. Driving in LA
is a real experience and can take far longer to get from point A
to point B than you could ever imagine, due to the congestion.

While you are probably working within a budget, treat this as if it
is the only chance you will have to visit here, and make the most
of it. You won't be disappointed. Even though my trips Down Under
were business, I had plenty of leisure time and I made the most of
it, and I am glad I did.

Looks like it is worth a look, especially the steins, plus the entry fee

We are thinking of flying from NYC to Tulsa, in order to save time.
Having a look around Wisconsin will give us an idea of what the North

coast along route 66. Unfortunately Wilton is a bit out of the way down
there in NC and I fear if we drive down to visit him we will end up out

Thanks for the tip Hans, looks like we we will be cutting out some parts
and flying.
I sorta envisaged trains in the US being somewhat like the ones in
Europe but then again everyone in the States drives and the trains are
more like they are here, with infrequent services and if want a bit of
legroom you have to cough up big time. We took the train over here a
couple of times and it was pretty cramped in the budget seating area.

Also local public transportation is still in very fine print around here.
The best way to sightsee the country is a rental car.
Allthough all rental cars are Non Smoking and without ashtrays or
lighters, - but who knows if you dont tell.
Rates are ~ $ 15 a day.
You could combine air travel for long distance and rent wheels locally (LA
to Chicago = ~ 2000 miles or +30 hrs driving).

That's a good comparison. The train can be your hotel, your
restaurant, and your transportation, if you pay for a sleeping
compartment. Four years ago the food was excellent, but I've heard
that might have changed. The train ride up the coast from LA to San
Fran is quite scenic. Trains have scheduling problems, mostly in the
areas where passenger trains yield to freight trains. It's possible
for Amtrak to get you to a station after the train you were supposed
to ride out of the station left.

If you could have a lister inspect and procure a car for you, touring
the country in a 300D 2.5 or a 300SDL would be quite nice. If you buy
it in California and sell it in Illinois/Wisconsin, you might even
turn a profit.
If you relive the POS SDL saga while on vacation, that would not be
fun or profitable. I wonder if it's feasible to take a train to Tulsa
and find a usable car at Okie Acres? Seems like that place has more
drivers than reliable cars these days. How's Reggie's W140 doing?

$15 a day?! I see you haven't rented for a while.

I went on the Budget Car Rental site (http://www.budget.com) and found
that going to the rental office at the Los Angeles airport (the other LA),
renting a standard- or full-size car, picking it up on 5 June and
returning on 15 June, will be $311.41 for an Aussie (it will be $244.14
for a US resident
-- they do record your driver's license information). So that's $31/day.
Plus gasoline costs. That is down from what it was a few years ago (which
was $60 - 70/day).

You could combine air travel for long distance and rent wheels locally
(LA to Chicago = ~ 2000 miles or +30 hrs driving).

Now that's a good suggestion. I prefer travelling Southwest Airlines

Hendrik
who doesn't like big cities

LWB250 wrote:

Welcome, Hendrick. Having had the pleasure of visiting Down Under several
times, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how similar the two countries
are in many respects.

Your plan of flying to LA, staying a few days, then flying to Chicago are
probably the best. Rental cars in these cities are plentiful and the market is
competitive, so you could easily get a mid-sized sedan for a couple hundred
$USD a week with unlimited mileage. That would allow you to wander freely
without worry.

As for buying a car and then selling it, well, I can just imagine the pitfalls
- the main ones being establishing ownership (you're not a US citizen) and
insurance (can't register/title in most states without proof of residency and
insurance.) I think a rental is going to be the easiest and best way to go.
Look into an international driver's license now - I used to have one when I
traveled extensively for business, and it allowed me to rent a car in just
about any country.

Check your maps - LaCrosse is on the western edge of Wisconsin, and a long
day's drive from Milwaukee or Chicago. You might want to consider using
Minneapolis/St. Paul for your base of operations rather than Chicago. MSP is a
wonderful city and has a lot to see and do within a short distance. It's not
the thriving metropolis that Chicago is, but you could easily make a 2-3 day
trip to Chicago from there without a lot of effort.

Trains, while they are available, are somewhat iffy in this country. The
primary rail traffic is freight, and while there are regularly scheduled
passenger trains, their schedules are often compromised by freight traffic. If
you land in MSP, a train trip to Chicago make a lot of sense, and would be a
pleasant day trip (one way) with some very nice scenery.

Public transportation in most larger cities is cheap and easy within the city
centers. If you go to Chicago you will pay a premium for staying in the city,
but that is offset by the proximity of so many wonderful things to see and do,
not to mention the ease of getting around using public transportation.

You'll definitely need a car in LA, as the public transportation there is pretty lousy, not to
mention the logistics are so complex due to the size of the area. You don't want to stay around
LAX, as that area is pretty nasty. Make a list of the things you want to do and see and find a
place to stay based on that. Driving in LA is a real experience and can take far longer to get
from point A to point B than you could ever imagine, due to the congestion.

While you are probably working within a budget, treat this as if it is the only
chance you will have to visit here, and make the most of it. You won't be
disappointed. Even though my trips Down Under were business, I had plenty of
leisure time and I made the most of it, and I am glad I did.

Dan

Cheers Rich, we'll work something out and the train most likely has

In my experience a Benz will tell you if it is sick and needs to go to

You shouldn't have any problems with the train stopping, though you
might have to stand out in the woods or some farmer's field to smoke.

BTW, you know that the US is rather large, and those train rides (even
if it all works, which I understand is somewhat problematic) it takes
awhile. Rental cars are cheap enough (decline the insurance, let your
own or credit card cover it) though you might have to learn to drive
on the proper side of the road. But the distance aspect applies too
-- I think you mapped out about 5000 miles there Bubba. Airlines fly
with some frequency everywhere you want to go, though you can't smoke
in the cabin (they might ask you to step outside) or most aerodromes,
and rental car agencies are lined up to take your money. I think
Hertz and some others don't have drop-off charges, so going between
cities is not an issue.

Maybe if you fly first to Claremore Oklahoma you can find your cheap
Benz, and you'll be far enough away when it craps out that you won't
be able to go back for a warranty claim.

Be sure you understand what your credit card and insurance covers. Most
will cover collision damage but the rental companies are now also
charging for loss of use if a car needs to have damages repaired or is
totaled. This might not be covered.

I found that my insurance co (State Farm) does not cover this in the

Hi Kaleb, I take you mean the J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum?
Looks like it is worth a look, especially the steins, plus the entry fee
is very reasonable.
We are thinking of flying from NYC to Tulsa, in order to save time.
Having a look around Wisconsin will give us an idea of what the North
East of America is like and then we can go from Tulsa towards the west
coast along route 66. Unfortunately Wilton is a bit out of the way down
there in NC and I fear if we drive down to visit him we will end up out
of time or rushing to make up time and only see America from the
interstates and motel rooms.
Basically if we want to spend a day here and there seeing stuff we have
to cut down on travel time.

Anyway sorry I have been slack in responding to the list emails, as I

Au Contraire I've ridden the trains here quite a bit and legroom is not the
problem.

For going to NYC from Boston they are the absolute ticket, 3x as much seat and
legroom as a plane while taking the same amount of time (total to get from
Boston to Manhattan including waiting for the flight an a $45 cab ride from the
airport) and costing roughly the same amount (the train is cheaper if you count
the afore mentioned cab ride).

That said on all other counts you are correct.

Yeah the anti-smoking Nazis are busy down here too, little by little
they impose their will and when they have had their way with the smokers
they will start on the drinkers, once they are consigned to history it
will be the turn of car drivers, gamblers and then meat eaters.

We'll see how we go in Vegas, I really only wanna go on that roller
coaster in the sky and a quick gander at the blink on the strip. I don't
gamble so I am not even really sure why we want to go there.
Yeah airports can be a nightmare to find your way around in and the GPS
is a must have unless it tells us to drive off a jetty.

Curt Raymond wrote:

I think you'll find smoking laws vary wildly by state. New England is basically
the center of the civilized world for anti-smoking meaning theres a lot of
places you can't smoke but we don't get lame about it like CA does.
While you're in LA don't plan on smoking ANYWHERE... Seriously. In Burbank you
can't smoke within something like 500' of a window or door. Doesn't matter if
its open (or capable of being opened) or not...

Don't plan on smoking on the train, or in the airport, bus terminal, subway,
train station or restaurant in most of the states. I believe some states,
particularly in the south, will still allow smoking sections in restaurants but
nowhere in the northeast still does that I know of.

Good riddance too...

Anyway I think Amtrak is a pretty good, relatively civilized way to travel but
plan on it being at least a little slower than any reported timetable. I know
nothing of Chi-town and the surround, I'm sure some of our locals (Mao and
Luther) will pipe up on it.

In Vegas be sure to check out the Gold and Silver Pawnshop of Pawnstars fame.
Apparently there are some fantastic sub$100 rooms to be had this year at good
hotels.Theres a tapas place on Paradise Blvd thats worth checking out, food gets cheaper
the farther you get from the strip, Paradise is roughly parallel to the strip but 2
streets over. Renting a car in Vegas only makes sense if you're not going to be on the
strip. The traffic on the strip is terrible... Cabs in Vegas are the most expensive I've
ever seen (2-3x New York) every ride will cost at least $10.

LA covers a huge area both good and bad. What I'd guess you really want to see
is Hollywood. Theres a decent Comfort Inn just of Hollywood Blvd thats
relatively inexpensive while being within walking distance for stuff like
Hollywood Blvd. A car rental in LA isn't a bad idea, get one with GPS though I
always have a helluva time finding the car return at LAX. LAX is by the way one
of the better airports to travel through, so is Vegas although the landings in
Vegas can be epic depending on the winds.

I dunno anything about huge gunshops, I think thats probably a southern thing.
I try to avoid huge anythings...

Yeah the anti-smoking Nazis are busy down here too, little by little they
impose their will and when they have had their way with the smokers they
will start on the drinkers, once they are consigned to history it will be
the turn of car drivers, gamblers and then meat eaters.

We'll see how we go in Vegas, I really only wanna go on that roller
coaster in the sky and a quick gander at the blink on the strip. I don't
gamble so I am not even really sure why we want to go there.
Yeah airports can be a nightmare to find your way around in and the GPS is
a must have unless it tells us to drive off a jetty.

Curt Raymond wrote:
I think you'll find smoking laws vary wildly by state. New England is
basically the center of the civilized world for anti-smoking meaning
theres a lot of places you can't smoke but we don't get lame about it
like CA does.
While you're in LA don't plan on smoking ANYWHERE... Seriously. In
Burbank you can't smoke within something like 500' of a window or door.
Doesn't matter if its open (or capable of being opened) or not...

Don't plan on smoking on the train, or in the airport, bus terminal,
subway, train station or restaurant in most of the states. I believe some
states, particularly in the south, will still allow smoking sections in
restaurants but nowhere in the northeast still does that I know of.

Good riddance too...

Anyway I think Amtrak is a pretty good, relatively civilized way to
travel but plan on it being at least a little slower than any reported
timetable. I know nothing of Chi-town and the surround, I'm sure some of
our locals (Mao and Luther) will pipe up on it.

In Vegas be sure to check out the Gold and Silver Pawnshop of Pawnstars
fame. Apparently there are some fantastic sub$100 rooms to be had this
year at good hotels.Theres a tapas place on Paradise Blvd thats worth
checking out, food gets cheaper the farther you get from the strip,
Paradise is roughly parallel to the strip but 2 streets over. Renting a
car in Vegas only makes sense if you're not going to be on the strip. The
traffic on the strip is terrible... Cabs in Vegas are the most expensive
I've ever seen (2-3x New York) every ride will cost at least $10.

LA covers a huge area both good and bad. What I'd guess you really want
to see is Hollywood. Theres a decent Comfort Inn just of Hollywood Blvd
thats relatively inexpensive while being within walking distance for
stuff like Hollywood Blvd. A car rental in LA isn't a bad idea, get one
with GPS though I always have a helluva time finding the car return at
LAX. LAX is by the way one of the better airports to travel through, so
is Vegas although the landings in Vegas can be epic depending on the
winds.

I dunno anything about huge gunshops, I think thats probably a southern
thing. I try to avoid huge anythings...

Yep - a chicago dog is a dog with bullet holes... NOT.
Chicago is the hometown for hot dogs, really - read the Upton Sinclair
book about the 1920's titled The Jungle for some good old time
muck-raking journalism. A chicago dog is not served with ketchup -
that is forbidden. Gene Jude's is a stand up place only and they
serve hot dogs and fries and tamales - that is all, but they are a
historical and well know dive, and do not ask for ketchup or you will
be shown the door.

A ballgame is a big deal in Chicago, if you have the time to see the
Cubs. If interested, we can see what the schedule is and get you
there easily. However, I was disappointed with the experience several
years ago when I went. They play the game for tv - not the patrons at
the ball park, which I found a bit tatty sad.
