Did you notice the paint on the hood? Good example of why the hood pad is so

My '83 300D Turbo hasn't had a hood pad in years. The paint is oxidized
but doesn't have any heat damage. In the cool, rainy weather we're
currently having here in Seattle, rain will steam off the hood if I'm in
stop and go traffic for a while, though.

If the turbo got hot enough to cook paint off an unprotected hood, no
one's air cleaner would have any paint left! :)

My 190D 2.5t original hood pad DIDN'T have the silver heat shield (nor
does the replacement) and there's NO evidence of hood or replacement pad
damage even after 10-15 kmi of high speed highway driving (and a LOT
more city driving).

My '87 300TD (turbo) doesn't have any heat shield on the original pad
either (another year or two and the pad will need replacement - but NOT
from turbo heat - just old age).

I'm pretty sure I have seen a few OM503.96 engines (maybe late '87
production) with heat shields above the turbo, but certainly not ALL of
them did - and one certainly wasn't needed in either of my OM60x.96 engines.

I just ordered a replacement for mine (na) and asked about the turbo
pad. The cost is like 4x more. From this mfr there is a heat shield. I
was initially thinking I would get one because it would probably add to
the life of the pad. With the cost considered, I ordered the one
without the heat shield. I may affix a piece of heat shielding material
my friend liberated from Grumman.
What about under pans Marshall? Do any of your cars still have it?
Ever see any aftermarket? I'd really like to have all the sound

It's a 201, not a 124. 124's are the 300Es, 300Ds, 400Es and 500Es from the
late 80s/early 90s

190D prices have gotten really high in the last few years. He's asking
$5500, which I've seen a few 190Ds go for on ebay. Depending on condition
and how much you're really willing to spend ... might be a winner.

You already know its a 201. They're nice cars. Nimble in comparison to
your 123-126 experience. The Euro 190D I recently picked up looked just
like the one on e-bay. Florida took its toll on the paint. I think the
car is silver in the pics. It looks like cream inside.
It probably really is a good deal except paint can be expensive, then
again, you may want to try clear coating the upper damaged surfaces
only. I went for the whole paint job and stripped all the trim, bumpers
etc off of it. $678, not the greatest but respectable. In the
springtime (maybe sooner), I will help it out a bit.
I don't know if this is good reference but I paid $1200 for mine 1986
2.5 5 Cyl (not 4 as yours is advertised) 62,000 miles, original
owner. I had to do a ton of this and that but I now have a near perfect
low mileage MB diesel for $2600.
If I charged myself for the labor, I may have close to $5,000 in it.
Either of these cars should hold up nicely for a good ten years if
cared for properly. I love mine, had several before, no inherent
problems. Well maybe the wiper.

Did you notice the paint on the hood? Good example of why the hood pad is so

And the bad paint is on the roof - not the hood!

1987 300SDL 136k (with new hood pad)

Pretty good observation. Except

The 1989 190D 2.5 never came with a turbo (1987 only). The paint is
shot due to exposure to the sun. Deck lid and roof paint is damaged too.

Looks nice are these W124s any good?? Also can
the clearcoat just be resprayed or do you have to redo
the paint also. What is the going price for these??
All I've ever dealt with are W123s and a W126.
