In MA the trucks generally can do both brine and salt, brine before the storm, rock salt after, usually mixed with some sand. We've got hills, this is a requirement or nothing would ever move around. The salt kills some of the grass on the edge of the road but that's about it. Curr Sent from

Rock salt here. I'm sure our friends can tell us what they do in the People's Republics of Massachusetts and Rhode Isle. Like Craig said, where it's so cold you don't dare shut down without a place to plug in your block heater, it's far cheaper and more effective to put studs and chains

I can't speak for the east, but between the rockies and the appalachians, they salt the crap out of the roads, especially in the fall.   The salt of choice has gone from rock salt to liquid brine.   They will put the brine on the roads before it snows.  As the winter wear on and the salt gets
