The level of stress in my house drops dramatically when we shut off the boob-tube; that's why I've resisted getting cable and will continue to resist... Recently I went to a leadership training session and the instructor advised all to occasionally shut-off all electronics (radio/TV/cell phone/computer/ipod) and 'fast' from all media for two or three days. That struck me as a good thing to do at least once a year or so, and preferably for a two-week period or longer... -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Rolf Sent: Thursday, January 07, 2010 6:30 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Gonna snow in ATL today. They say it's 8.1 for Muslim families but for most Europeans countries it's less than 2.0 - meaning the existing population will decline and never recover. It's similar here but we have a birthrate of 2.38 when latino families are included - which, with deathrates is considered barely sustainable. But in the last decade, beginning with the 9/11 attacks, the greatest assault on faith in air travel has come not from accidents but from intentional acts of sabotage by a handful of homicidal malefactors. Statistically, their criminal actions barely register. But the ripple effect of public panic at the notion that any passenger on any plane could be a human time bomb has rattled the airline industry and compromised the freedom of travel that the world’s citizens previously enjoyed. While it was running, I tucked it into the currently-unused garage spot normally occupied by the daughter's car (she is snowed in at her boyfriend's house). I plan to walk to work tomorrow, because the battery in my 300E is on its last leg and I don't want to see if it will indeed start in -20F temps after sitting outside my office for the workday. I remember it happening once, -25F. Diesel busses wouldn't start. It rarely gets that cold where my parents live so they don't have outlets to plug the busses in... They canceled school for mud once too, the busses all parked in an unpaved lot and one spring they couldn't get 'em out. Took all day (we went over to watch) and once they did they didn't park them there again for a couple weeks. LWB250 wrote: Traction control is a scam. I have a 2002 Crown Vic with traction control that is absolutely worthless in snow or ice. De UnderAchieva has traction control. The first time it snowed last fall, the engine felt sluggish, then I noticed that T/C was turned on. I'd be churning through the snow, the computer would retard the timing, and I'd feed more throttle to keep the wheels going... The result was just wasted fuel. I turned off T/C and haven't wanted to turn it back on, other than to get rid of the warning light at night. One time I used cruise control and traction control going up an icy hill to see how the car would deal with it. The C/C mashed the throttle, the traction loss warning light came on, and the C/C hit the throttle harder and the tranny downshifted. The car never downshifts on that hill, but it does when the traction control is killing the power. Wouldn't intelligent design require the cruise control to shut off under conditions that didn't allow it to hold a steady speed without wheelspin? Re: [MBZ] Gonna snow in ATL today.
Back in HS I started a short story. I was reading alot of cyber punk at the time and was inspired by William Gibson among others, he wrote heavily about cybernetic implants and what not. In my short story there were tea houses that you could go to and enjoy a japanese/chinese tea ceremony, the catch was that all implants and cybernetics had to be removed or turned off at the door. I wonder if I still have that somewhere, its 20 years later and alot of Gibson's prediction have or are becoming reality. -Rolf On 01/08/2010 08:52 AM, Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310 wrote: The level of stress in my house drops dramatically when we shut off the boob-tube; that's why I've resisted getting cable and will continue to resist... Re: [MBZ] Gonna snow in ATL today.
Speaking of such - panic, and all, I just reads this in the NYT --- Nearly all of the millions of flights that take off and land each year proceed safely, without incident. Any number of accidents can (but rarely do) put a flight in jeopardy: from engine failure, to the sudden apparition of a flock of geese, to electrical storms, to ice, to air pockets. And: The risk of a terrorist disruption of a flight is infinitesimal, but public perception of that risk can be outsize and emotional ... understandably so. Terrorists, like bogeymen, are frightening even when they don’t exist; and when they do appear in broad daylight, citizens who learn that the government failed to shield them from menace feel vulnerable and outraged. Re: [MBZ] Gonna snow in ATL today.
You southern guys are breaking my heart. I came home early from work and spent about 90 minutes on the non-spinning end of a snowblower in -1F temps and 40 mph winds. The good news is that I was able to start the outside 240D with only 50 seconds of pre-glow (plus block heater) and could snow-blow its driveway spot down to the concrete. If the battery will make it two more months, then it will be okay for the next nine months. It works well but doesn't have the CCA needed for this climate. Re: [MBZ] Gonna snow in ATL today.
All true, but.. I think the feeling is that someone boarding a plane with a bomb is something that SHOULD be preventable. Storms, air pockets, geese... these things go into the random chance category that to some degree are unavoidable. Also I think that people feel that the more people succeed at terror attacks, the more people will attempt them in the future. From a probability standpoint, for now, the fears are irrational. But that's why terrorism is effective. A very small number of people can exercise power over a huge population in ways that a direct military attack could never do. Any number of accidents can (but rarely do) put a flight in jeopardy: from engine failure, to the sudden apparition of a flock of geese, to electrical storms, to ice, to air pockets. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

If the battery will make it two more months, then it will be okay for the next nine months. It works well but doesn't have the CCA needed for this climate.
