Re: [MBZ] Let the Martha'ing Begin!

2016-12-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Took it easy today to give the body a rest and pay some attention to the W126,
who has been feeling neglected of late.

Spent some time installing the Mercedes factory W123 rear mud flaps, which were
the “mystery item” I mentioned the other day. They arrived yesterday, so I
spent a little time this morning cleaning up the flaps and then installed them
this afternoon.

The brackets and everything are well thought out, but I’m not sure I like them.
They’re a black material, some sort of rubber, with white fibers embedded in
it. At first I thought there were a bunch of weird crud on them, but when I
looked closer I realized it was the exposed fibers I was seeing.

Anyway, they’re installed but I already covered the car for the night before I
realized I should take some pictures. Maybe tomorrow.

Re: [MBZ] Let the Martha'ing Begin!

2016-12-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Had to move some furniture over to the house from the MIL’s this morning, which
took pretty much all morning.

Got home and installed the new right rear taillight lens and seal. Easy peasey.

Rolled the car out of the garage and ran it long enough to turn around and pull
into the garage nose first. Popped the hood and changed out the composite
washer on the fuel filter bolt for the copper crush washer from the dealer.
Went inside to do some other stuff.

Came back out about an hour later and pulled the valve cover. Found another
broken rubber mount on the air cleaner, which I suspected as it was vibrating
more than I expected, and also noticed that the thermostat housing was leaking
at the joint between the cover and housing. Not a surprise since the
thermostat seal was hard as a rock. Something else to add to the Monday
morning parts order.

Got the valve cover off and started in on the valves with my regular wrenches.
Dang it! I wish I had kept the set of valve adjusting wrenches that Russ Maki
gave me when he sold his diesel. Poop.

So it’s off to Harbor Freight to drop $16 on a couple of sets of cheap Chinee
combination wrenches. Stopped by the Ace to see if they had copper washers, as
the valve cover hold down studs/nuts had none, which explained why they were
leaking. No joy there,, the majik drawers failed me. Darn!

Got home, got out the torch and started heating. Got a couple of 14mm wrenches
bent up close to correct and quenched them in a bucket of water.

Went back to the engine and found these did the trick. Not as nice as the real
thing, but definitely better than straight combination wrenches. As with other
fasteners on the car, gorillas must have done the last valve adjustment. Ugh.
All of the valves were really, really tight. I doubt it had been adjusted for
a lot of miles based on what I found. Valve cover looked nice and clean, and
the head looked good as far as a lack of crud.

Back rubber bumper on the air cleaner had sheared off. Only the metal disc and
the cup were still there, and they weren’t budging. I filled the cup with
Kroil and shot some underneath to hit the exposed threads. Went back to doing
some other things and returned with a pair of channelocks about five minutes
later. Remains of the bumper turned right out! Kroil is magical stuff, for
sure.

Got everything buttoned back up and took it for a short test drive. Found that
the copper crush washer on the fuel filter bolt seeps. Dang it!

Kaleb! Find me an 02 fuel filter housing, please! The later one with the two
O-rings on the hollow bolt.

With the filter seeping, the thermostat cover seeping and no washers on the
valve cover nuts/studs, I’m not going to drive it until I get everything to
seal it up well. Despite the minor issues it runs well, even better than it
did. I was surprised as I didn’t think a valve adjustment would make that much
difference.

Time to hit the shower and then let my back rest. Hanging over that engine
adjusting valves is a real pain in the back…

Got home from work, let the livestock out on the lanai and changed clothes.

Headed out to the garage to drain, flush and refill the cooling system on the
300D, as well as both hoses.

Drained the system, got both hoses off without incident and removed the
thermostat, which I did not replace as it's working fine. I do wish I had a
thermostat seal, as the one on the car was pretty hard.

I flushed with lots of clear water, including the heater circuit, and after
everything drained I used compressed air in the heater circuit to flush as much
of the water out as possible.

Got the new hoses in place, the thermostat housing cleaned up and the bolts set
with anti seize, and sealed up the system.

A bottle of RedLine WaterWetter went in first, then about a gallon of MB (blue)
coolant premixed at 50-50. Ran for a few minutes with the heat on, ended up
getting a total of almost two gallons in the system. Road tested several times
with proper temperature, lots and lots of heat when desired, and all is well.

That's it for the evening.

This weekend I have to move some furniture from the MIL's house, then when I
get home I'm adjusting valves on the car, as I don't think they've been done in
a long time. After that I'll have the transmission fluid/filter/B1 kit and
engine mounts left to do.

try a NAPA store and see it they have the little brass dingies
that do that. We used to have a parts box that had them and more
seals for the hoses because sometimes you get too fast on taking
the hose off and the freon spewing out would spit the seal and
the little brass thing out and its gone. So had to have new ones
on hand. I would guess they should be still available.

me all of about 15 minutes, if that. Cleaned the MAF while I had the
air cleaner off. Seemed happy, so I moved to the 300D to do a couple
of minor things.

Replaced the old sealing ring on the power steering pump. It was
leaking slightly and making a mess, so it got replaced. Realized I had
left the brake fluid reservoir cap off when I was topping off the
fluid yesterday. Dang it. No sign of it anywhere in the nether regions
of the engine compartment, but no worries, as I had a spare in the
“drawer ‘o’ parts”. Huzzah!

I’ve got new radiator hoses that are nice and flexible, unlike the

Re: [MBZ] Let the Martha'ing Begin!

2016-11-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
After I finished work today, I went out and got the front of the car in the air
and the wheels off.

I replaced both front brake hoses and bled the front brake circuit. Looks like
discs will be in order for the next brake job. Bummer - I know they’re cheap,
but I really hate having to do wheel bearings. Ugh.

Got the third brake light working, despite its ugliness. Turns out there was a
little module in it, no doubt to allow connection to brake lights that were
combination brake/turn signals, as it had two wires that come out besides the
ground. It was, not doubt, quite dead, as the light didn’t work and the lamp
was good. I cut it out of the circuit and connected the lamp directly to the
wire coming from the brake light. Works now, bright as heck at night since it
doesn’t sit flush to the window.

Was wondering what I could do to clean the awful brake dust on the front
wheels, since nothing I had seemed to make a difference. Did some Googling and
found that oven cleaner was a preferred product to tackle tough brake dust
issues. I had the remains of a can of grille cleaner, which is the same thing,
so I gave it a shot.

Got about 90% of the brake dust off the wheels. They look pretty nice now.

Discovered that the passenger side door lock (key) doesn’t seem to do anything
when you turn the lock. Hmm. Have to pull the door panel and see what’s up
there. I’ve noticed that the trunk lock doesn’t work with the key when the car
is locked, either.

That was pretty much it for the day, as I had to tear into the SL500 to see why
it’s upset.

They’re pretty much unknown on this side of the pond as far as I know.
Unobtanium, for sure.

up to it. If not, maybe just the front brake lines, as those
won’t be difficult and shouldn’t take long.

I am starting to research some replacement speakers for both
back and front of the car. I want something that’s decent but
will be a drop-in replacement. Initial research has shown
that Boston Acoustics S45 and S55 fit the front and back,
respectively, however, they don’t make them any more. I’m
going to do some digging to see what their modern replacements
are and if they will fit as well.

I don’t want to make this some ground pounding ghetto blaster,
but the original speakers are clearly tired and sounding
pretty lousy. They’re intact, but the cones are probably
pretty dead by now from age if not exposure to the elements.

Absolutely not. They will have to fit within the boundaries of the stock
speaker grilles.

Nothing but stock, man!

I have a very rare W123 accessory coming to me in the next few days, something
that I’ll bet few, if any, have ever seen. Not sure if I’ll install it or not,
but I had the opportunity to snag it and I just couldn’t pass it up.

In fairness to Eddie and friends those are prices per pair.

I’ve got a Europa cassette I’ve already talked to Eddie about rebuilding. I
could probably entice him into cutting me some slack for a package deal if I
was so inclined, but I can’t justify the cost when I can buy 100mm and 130mm
aftermarket speakers for a third of what they’re charging. And since I’m
running the stock Becker, it’s not like I need something high power/high end.

Could be that’s the way MB shipped them to the US - you get a sunroof, like it
or not. Of course, at that time a lot of people ordered their cars, so maybe
it was a novelty? I don’t recall too many domestic cars having sunroofs at
that time.

The crush washer on the fuel filter is seeping, so I’ll drive the 350SDL today
until I can swing by Ace and get a composition washer to replace it.

Kaleb, do you have an “02” filter assembly that uses the two O-rings instead of
the crush washer and O-ring you want to sell?

Got a box ‘o’ stuff in from FCP Euro last night. Curved breather hose, more
ATF and a primer pump that I really didn’t need but will keep on the shelf for
a backup.

next weekend when I do the filter and fluid. Got a set of engine mounts to do,
too. Might try those out one evening this week if I feel up to it.

Looking forward to getting out on the road this morning.

Happy Cyber Monday, all!

Re: [MBZ] Let the Martha'ing Begin!

2016-11-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Slow day today. Seems that the cumulative affects of the week have caught up
with me. I am drained.

Mild tinkering and clean up stuff so far:

Drained PS reservoir, installed new filter and topped off with MB fluid. Old
fluid was a little dark, but not bad. It was MB fluid, which is good.

Polished out the side windows to get the last of the water spots off. Did the
windshield as well and then applied some Rain-X.

Driver’s outside rear view mirror housing seemed sloppy, like the spring wasn’t
holding it tight to the door frame, so I popped the glass out to have a look.
No wonder - the spring was unhooked from the housing for some reason. Polished
the mirror glass and greased up the swivel and other parts of the mount and
reinstalled it.

Plugged the vacuum line to the EGR. PO told me it had a BB in it but
considering other things he told me, I checked to be sure. No BB. Vacuum all
the way back to the changeover valves as I suspected, so I put a golf tee in
the line at the EGR for now.

Pulled the glove compartment liner to see if the foam hose was still intact,
despite the ACC working just fine as far as temperatures and fan speeds.
Amazing! The original foam hose is still in place and in good condition. I’ve
never seen one before, other than in powder form. Nice.

Went through the contents of the owner’s manual pouch. I was stunned. Bought
at Lokey MB (Clearwater) in 1982, owner’s book stamped for all services up
until 1999 around 100k, shortly before the PO bought it. I even found the
window sticker and predelivery checklist, as well as the meal plate they issued
with the cars back then to be able to stamp the service orders with the owner’s
information when the car came in for service.

$29,698.00 MSRP
N/C Becker Europa Radio & Cassette
$829.00 Sliding roof option
$115.00 distribution & delivery

$30.642.00 final price.

Window sticker:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vfm9x6ajn2zw3f0/1982%20300D%20Window%20Sticker001.pdf?dl=0

Predelivery Checklist:

Might do a little more, probably won’t. My Allen Edmonds have been begging for
a shine, so I should probably address that. Planning on driving the car to
work tomorrow. Should be fun.

Re: [MBZ] Let the Martha'ing Begin!

2016-11-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
One note I forgot about in the lat post - as a data point, I use rubber cement
to glue the moisture barrier back in place on the door panels. It’s cheap,
simple, and holds the plastic in place while allowing you to remove it without
damage in the future if necessary.

Got the carpets back in and the rear seat bottom cushion installed after all
got a good cleaning. Now I can put my brand new MB carpeted floor mats in the
car, although I really hate to as I don’t want them to get dirty. I’ll see if
there’s any ScotchGard around the house I can hit them with first. I think
they stopped selling the stuff, but I seem to recall seeing a can on the shelf
somewhere around the house...

Did the Diesel Purge with a filter change. Ran it out of an old RedLine Diesel
Catalyst bottle I had with a couple of pieces of clear hose, which worked
great. I’ll have to drive it later tonight to run an errand, so it will be
interesting to see if there is a noticeable difference in performance or
running. It’s been a long time since I’ve used Diesel Purge, so I’m not quite
sure what to expect.

The Continental radio showed up this afternoon. I’m going to hold off
installing it in the W126 and maybe put it in the W123 for a bit. I need to
check the speakers in the W123 as well - I think they’re the originals, so they
are probably pretty far gone. They all work, but the range is pretty limited.
Part of that could be the Becker Europa that’s in it, too.

Calling it quits for the day on the car. I might take on the engine mounts
tomorrow, I’ll decide in the morning. Transmission filter kit came today, too,
but I’ll hold off on that until I get the spring kits for the valve body.

Re: [MBZ] Let the Martha'ing Begin!

2016-11-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Took the car out today for some errands. It’s such a nice ride and is
amazingly quick. I still need to resolve the stacked 2-3 shift so I’ll be
ordering the B1 and B2 spring kits this week, as I have a filter coming on
Monday along with some ATF.

Pulled the carpets and scrubbed them. Fortunately, they’re in really good shape
with minimal wear or dirt. No surprises underneath any of them, other than the
handful of change I always seem to find when I clean out a car. I’m still
wondering when I’m going to find the car that has a couple of stacks of $100s
under the back seat…nothing there but $0.52 in change. Not even a Cheeto. Darn.

Opened up the right rear door to replace the leaking lock actuator. Door
interior has never been opened based on the condition of the moisture barrier.
Cleaned the door panel and armrest with 303, polished all the chrome and
anodized bits with some rubbing compound. Tested the actuator and I now have
locking and unlocking on the door.

Opened up the left rear door to deal with the door check.

I gave the old door check the college try, but couldn’t recover it. The “cup”
on the end of the spring and ball cylinder was cracked and even missing some
little bits on one end, preventing the ball on that end from remaining captive.
I tried putting it all back together after cleaning and regreasing, but it
wouldn’t hold up. So I got out the new URO door check, greased it heavily and
installed it. Works fine, I couldn’t really tell any difference in
construction from the original one. Of course I’m sure the quality of the
metal isn’t as good, but functionally it seems OK.

Cleaned the door bits up as I did on the other and reassembled. Door opens and
holds just fine.

Break time to assist with some holiday decoration, then I’ll be heading back
out to do a Diesel Purge and install a new filter and cigar hose.

Thanks, Curley.

This really came out of my use of rubbing compound as a replacement for chrome
cleaner/polish, which is effectively the same thing. Rather than buy chrome
cleaner, I just use 3M rubbing compound and it works great. I figured it
couldn’t be any worst than the “Nuttin’s Better” stuff, which was probably just
powdered silica in a little container.

I have glass cooktop cleaner, too, since we have a glass cooktop. Maybe I can
substitute rubbing compound for that as well and save a buck or two…

Got a decent start today despite sleeping in until 6:00.

Grille mounted, front and rear bumpers polished, cleaned and mounted
along with the cleaned end caps and brackets. Cleaned and detailed
trunk liners on both sides, cleaned trunk carpet and freshened.
Removed spare tire to find it was nearly brand new but has a date code

It holds air for now but I’ll be looking for a replacement from CL or

replacement of the rear window seal myself as I can’t find anyone
around here that will touch it. I have done windows like it a long
time ago in my VW and W112 days, so it won’t be the first time. Hmm.

Doing some final checking I found that I must have overfilled the
crankcase slightly when I changed oil last week, so I suctioned about
1/2 quart out. Whoops!

I replaced the levers on the vacuum switchover valves on the valve
cover, as one was worn away completely and the other was almost gone.
Cleaned the cam of all the old grease and applied fresh Mobil 1
synthetic grease since I had it handy.

Took the “whiz nut” off the bolt in the power steering reservoir as it
didn’t belong. Fortunately the spring was the original one so it was
just a matter of putting everything back together the way it belonged.
Not sure why the whiz nut was there.

Noticed that the windows had a lot of water spots that I couldn’t
clean off. Hmm. Jay O’Brien from the old lists had given me this
little container of some polishing compound called “Nuttin’s Better”
that was used for polishing imperfections out of windshields. I must
have used it up or lost it in a move, so I started looking for
alternatives. A-hah! Rubbing compound!

So I applied rubbing compound to the glass and polished away. Looks
great and took all of the water spots off the glass, too. Nice.

All that’s left for the day is to replace the “Gottlieb Daimler”
signature sticker on the inside of the windshield. I’ll head out to do
that next, then probably drive over to our private park before sundown
to take some glamour shots. The stickers can be had from the Classic
Center for around $7.00/each - part number 115 584 08 38.

Tomorrow I may do motor mounts, as I’ve got a set of Lemförder mounts
UPS just delivered. I’ll clean carpets and interior tomorrow as well.
I need to do the power steering fluid and fuel filters along with a
Diesel Purge, too. Maybe that will be on Sunday.

Got the grille polished and ready to install between holiday
preparations last night. It shined up nicely.

Vacuum check valve arrived in the mail yesterday, too, so I’ll pop
that into place when I have a minute and hopefully that will put an
end to the rapidly leaking vacuum issue. The old yellow plastic
splitter/check valve would let vacuum flow in either direction. The
new one definitely does not, so I’m pretty comfortable with the diagnosis.

Have to make a run into Tampa for some family medical stuff, which
will put me about three blocks away from the dealer. I’ll swing by and
pick up my “load ‘o’ parts” while I’m in the neighborhood. That will
give me lots more stuff to work with over the Thanksgiving weekend
while others are suffering from the pains of gluttony….

Re: [MBZ] Let the Martha'ing Begin!

Got a decent start today despite sleeping in until 6:00.

Grille mounted, front and rear bumpers polished, cleaned and mounted along with
the cleaned end caps and brackets. Cleaned and detailed trunk liners on both
sides, cleaned trunk carpet and freshened. Removed spare tire to find it was
nearly brand new but has a date code of 2004 AND a nice little sheet metal
screw in the edge of the tread. It holds air for now but I’ll be looking for a
replacement from CL or one of the local used tire resellers.

Touch up paint on the two small rust areas has dried and looks nice - it really
blended in better than I expected. Now that it’s dry I waxed it and replaced
the trim pieces that cover both areas. “Red Berries” were already installed on
Wednesday, so it’s was just a matter of popping the trim on the right rear door
and screwing the lower trunk lid trim to the trunk lid.

No rust anywhere in the trunk but signs of leaking noticed near the trailing
edge of the trunk “ceiling” near the right side hinge. The rear windows seal
is in such bad shape I’m sure that water has gotten into the trunk via the
failed seal, however, it couldn’t have been much as there’s no sign of it on
the floor or in the spare tire well. I’m not keen about the idea, but I am
seriously considering replacement of the rear window seal myself as I can’t

While running between preparations for Thanksgiving dinner, some family medical
issues and house cleaning for the upcoming holiday, I was able to get the “red
berries” installed in the body panels, the side trim strips installed - except
for the right rear door where the rust repair is - I left that off so I can
touch it up after I get the paint tomorrow along with the one on the trunk lid
for the same reason.

Taillights got reinstalled along with the trim pieces below them. I have the
front grille sitting on the table ready to be cleaned and polished between
other stuff.

By tomorrow, if I don't keel over from all of this madness, all I’ll have left
is to install the bumpers and grille. And then the other cars can get back
into the garage, which they’ll be happy about. Although it was nice to go out
early this morning, drive the W126 which started right up after a short glow,
and see that the rear window defroster is working…

$0.50 acrylic craft paint from WallyWorld. Hundreds of shades and cheap.
Small brush, let it flow into the grooves, use a damp paper towel to carefully
wipe the paint off the top.

Make a mistake? Wipe it off, do it again. If there’s a little overflow, let
it dry and scrape it off with your fingernail.

i went to Costco earlier, it was nearly insane. Not quite as bad as
before the hurricane, but it was getting there. I think there are a lot
of Yankees in town who are picking stuff up for the hol. They were
exhibiting Yankee behavior. It has been worse out here around me the

I’m not dealing with a concours car here. Something I want to look as nice as
the day it rolled off the boat. The options are such that I could buy a new
one, which would be stupid expensive, or just touch mine up so it looks nice.

This is a run of the mill, standard as they come, basic driver quality 300D. I
