Yeah I think there needs to be special mounts or something in the rear
cargo area for them to latch onto, they aren't plug and play on any
vehicle.  And yeah pretty useless and take up a lot of room.

Possibly not. Like it’s later cousin, the W164, the W163 had issues with power
steering pump reservoirs, so much so that I am almost sure all the dealers
still stock them. They do for the W164s with the M273, because I just ordered
one for mine and they had it on the shelf. I’ve done them on M112s in the W163,
it’s a quick and easy job.

And maybe the step bars on the sides. Purely cosmetic. MB did this sort of
"tarting up" by just adding some different wheels and a few cosmetic changes
and slapping a badge on it with a corresponding increase in price. At least
they did with other models, I'm guessing it's much the same in this situation,

Living in FL I found that UV can kill a set of tires in just a few years.
Michelins were especially susceptible to this, which I experienced and later
had confirmed by a tire guy who used to be a Michelin field rep. My cars are
garaged, so it's not an issue, but if you park you car outside here you're
likely to need a new set within 4-5 years due to the sidewalls cracking.

Do the tires sit outside or in a garage? My 2013 F150 has the original
tires, about 30K miles, and they look good. The truck owner's manual says
to replace a 7 years regardless of miles/wear. It sits in the garage unless
I'm driving it, which is not that often or far.
I'm thinking one more year and I'll replace them.

My pickup (‘05 Dodge 2500 SLT 4X4 5.9 Cummins) that I got in trade with my pops
has Michelin Defenders (265/70/17) on it, make date 4th week of 2016. The tires
have only about 30K miles on them, 16K of which I’ve put on in the last year.
They are wearing perfectly. Other that last summer, the tires have been in the
midwest all their lives.
Based on date alone (not wear), Michelin says on their website that their tires
should last 10 years if well maintained.
knowing that these tires haven’t lived in Arizona all their life I think I’ll
feel comfortable wearing them out before I would want to place them because of
date alone.

My Saturn allegedly had new tires in 2015.
Mixed date codes 20-40 of 2014, so he probably bought them before winter
of 2015, but gave me the impression he'd bought them Spring/Summer.

Being 7 years old is one reason they're not going back on the car in the
spring.

I suspect tires sitting outdoors in Arizona go faster than tires which
spend 4 months of the year in a dark garage in Michigan.

After 5 years of age, the compounds start to fail and catastrophic failure

It is not a question of "IF" ... but "WHEN" and if "When" happens in

I buy insurance for the car... I buy new tires as insurance for myself.

I scored a Cardone remanufactured brake booster for my 2003 ML350 off of Amazon
warehouse for $120 last week. Retail is almost $400. Original box was banged
up, which was the reason for the markdown, but the booster was perfect.

OE new is nearly $600. I’ll roll the dice.

As far as I know the CEL is not an instantaneous status indicator. It
requires a certain persistence in a fault detection before it comes
on. Likewise, once the fault itself is resolved, the CEL doesn't go dark
(unless manually cleared) but stays on for some time (or some number of

Mine's a 350. Should be called a 370.
What mpg does a 500 get, 14-16 or 16-18?

I get 18-20mpg in local rural driving, my best ever fill was driving to
Grand Rapids last year to pick up a clothes washer, 20.6mpg.
Driving to Cleveland and back with the tow dolly to pick up a car the week
after I bought the ML, I got about 19.5 with the cruise set at 65mph.

Re: [MBZ] ML Towing

2020-06-01 Thread Mitchell Haley EA via Mercedes
W163 is rated at 5000lb by MBUSA, I don't know what the international
rating is.
Curt's hitch is rated conservatively at 3500lb.
Draw-tite's hitch is rated at 5000lb.
There doesn't seem to be any difference in the hitches, the Draw-tite
comes with a couple of angle brackets which you're supposed to bolt to the
rear crossmember and the longitudinal frame rails of the truck.
AFAIK the 5000lb factory tow package doesn't have those frame
reinforcements, but I could be wrong about that.

I bought a Curt, and don't worry about hauling a 3000lb car on a 400lb
dolly with no brakes.

An 18' 7000lb trailer probably weighs 1800-2000lb.
Add a 4000lb car and you're getting up there in weight.
A 4800lb ML is kinda short wheelbase for a tow vehicle. I'd get a bit
worried when the trailer starts to outweigh it.

Any brake controller worth installing will have an inertia sensor and
proportion the trailer brake force based on how hard the driver is
braking.

Mitch.

When I needed to add trailer wiring to my volvo, I got a kit from
eTrailer.com. Very easy, pre-wired harness and powered converter that
plugs right into the stock taillight harness connections. No cutting or
splicing wire. I'll never do it any other way again.

There’s a really good thread on the Banzworld M163/4 forum about wiring in
trailer lighting on the ML using a cheap controller and picking up the
necessary connections i the left rear quarter.

I did it on my ML500, took about 15 minutes to do and it works great.

I have a 2” receiver on the ML that was on it when I got it. Haven’t towed
anything substantial yet, only a U-Haul trailer, but it didn’t seem to have any
issues with it. Didn’t seem to affect fuel economy, either. It still sucked.

Oh and I put a brake controller on my truck, it is some kind of accelerometer
deal I guess, it was kind of a pain to wire up, wires to the battery then to
the controller and back to the big plug. I guess the same thing would work on
the ML, it’s nothing special. My suburban has the trailer package with a
connector to plug into the controller, you can move the controller between
vehicles and just plug it in.

Re: [MBZ] ML Towing

2020-06-01 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
There are guys on the ML FB group who tow all kinds of stuff with 163s
including trailer/car rigs. The 163 doesn’t have the nannies that get unhappy
with towing, 164s want a $2000 nanny setup to make the other nannies happy. So
basically you can put on a hitch (there are 3000 and 5000lb versions) and wire
a light connector into the tail lights and you’re good with Bob as your uncle.

I put a hitch on the fmr wife’s 164 ML for a bike rack, that was easy enough,
but to actually tow was a big deal with the aforementioned cost.

This 99 ML320 has a hitch on it and a connector wired up, when I get the tranny
sorted it could be a tow car I guess. Not sure yet what version hitch it has,
I should look. The 5k version has these extra frame braces at the ends. I
think all the holes are already drilled in the frame. The 05 ML500 will get
one when I get the title sorted out.

Dan -
Sounds like I need to find a SDS somewhere around here.  Are they dealer
only?
I am having shifter problem than is a little different m than the one
described. My 06 E350 will some days be fine (for a while) then stop
shifting out of 1st or 2nd  (which ever one it start in).  The
Comfort/Sport indicator also goes blank.
When it does this it cannot be shifted into R or P.  To turn the car off
we turn the key to off, then put it in P.  Then when we re-start, it
will work for a while.

I assume the SDS is a little more than $29.95?

Thanks,

The SDS would not only show you the codes, you could see the WIS as it

exactly what and when the faults are occurring. You can also run
diagnostics on some systems, such as turning a particular component on
and off manually to see what’s happening.

I’ve never had to do a conductor plate myself, but it sure sounds like yours is
toast based on what you describe.

out for a spin. Was running a bit rough but I had disconnected the battery so
maybe that was the issue.

Transmission seemed stuck in 2nd or maybe 3rd, would not shift, would not
accelerate very well. Engine was running fine though. I pulled the OBD codes
again and got the same ones plus a couple showing cylinder misfires, not sure
what that was about.

P0758 Shift Solenoid B Electrical Circuit Malfunction

P0763 Shift Solenoid C Electrical Circuit Malfunction

P0743 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Electrical Circuit Malfunction

I'm guessing this might now be related to the conductor plate or maybe the
solenoids are bad though I don't think they would all gakk at once. I guess
I'll order a new conductor plate, or at least pull the one that is in there and
see if anything looks wonky. Or might it be the TCM is fried? Would the Fancy
Computer be able to see more detail about what is going on? Something
electrical clearly, and same codes as before I fooled with the connector.

Re: [MBZ] ML Window Regulator Replacement

2020-01-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Andrew, it seems that Mercedes went to rivets on window regulators in the late
90s. I know that W220 and W211 chassis cars use rivets as well. Probably
cheaper to use and easier in production. The regulators aren’t nearly as
substantial as in previous models, either. At least not in the W220s.

Don, I just use a manual riveter from HF like this one:

https://www.harborfreight.com/heavy-duty-17-1-2-half-inch-hand-riveter-with-collection-bottle-66422.html

My small riveter wouldn’t do rivets this size, and I don’t rivet enough to
bother with the hassle of a pneumatic riveter. If this one had a negative it’s
that you have to be able to get straight on at the rivet, so if it’s in a tight
space you might have problems.

So all this is suggesting the conductor plate is not conducting, or the
TCM is not C-ing.  I'll pull it again as Kaleb suggests and see if it
has any oil in it.  If not then opening up the tranny and on to the
conductor plate and solenoids.

At least this thing is fairly roomy and not bad to work on so far.

No, they wouldn't. They're all clipped into the conductor plate, though.

Pull the tcm back out and using a flathead screw driver you need to pry the
circuit board out of the case and see if it’s full of oil. If so clean it out.
If you replace the conductor plate test the solenoids while you are doing it.
Google how to test them, it’s easy. You measure resistance then apply power
and see if they click.

The SDS would not only show you the codes, you could see the WIS as it relates
to the parts that are faulting along with "actual values” to see exactly what
and when the faults are occurring. You can also run diagnostics on some
systems, such as turning a particular component on and off manually to see
what’s happening.

I’ve never had to do a conductor plate myself, but it sure sounds like yours is
toast based on what you describe.

I cleared all sorts of old HVAC and body codes from the ML with one, and it

So to save money, I spent $600-800 or something on a Dell 630 and a counterfeit

Re: [MBZ] ML 722.6 connector leaking

2019-06-26 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
It did show that 3 shift solenoids had errors and I cleared those but I
guess there are more deeper in there.  The PO told me it had a pump code
(from the fancy computer) which is why he thought that was the offending
element of the tranny troubles.

So if I don't clear the codes the tranny will still act wonky even if
the leaky connector is the issue (assuming I get everything cleaned up)?

Maybe I need to think about getting a fancy computer...

I looked at another coupla vids of replacing the conductor plate, it
seems like the electrical connector thingie is what seals it up, one
o-ring into the conductor plate electrical socket and the other seals
against the transmission body and the fluid is contained between the 2
o-rings.

I'm gonna drop the pan and just go ahead and replace the fluid and
filter, at least that will be done.

The car is surprisingly clean underneath, I guess maybe he detailed it
before he tried to sell it.  :Looks like a bit of PS fluid dripping but
nothing too bad, there are some new tranny cooler hoses in there, the
vehicle looks pretty well maintained (aside from this issue).

sprayed contact cleaner in there too but it seems to keep leaking out
fluid and it is not particularly clean either.  I'm wondering if this
guy I bought it from actually changed the conductor plate like he

of the conductor plate I don't see how it seals up against the

any orings in there.

Any thoughts on why it is leaking out the transmission hole?  Are the
o-rings in the connector (I have a new one but the old one looked OK)
what keeps things from leaking?

I don't think it wicked up the wires but I will pull the TCU and look

The fluid looked dirty and nasty, I'm wondering if I should just drop
the pan and drain out the fluid and pulled the valve body and take a
look at the conductor plate and see exactly what is going on?  I see
new ones plus filter, gasket and connector for $80 on Amazon, some
generic part I am thinking but since there are so many of these things
out there I guess it would be OK.  Although I do have a filter and

Thanks, I see about a million vids on these same issues, looks like the
722.6 is so common and the issues are so common, so that is good.  Best
news is that these trannies seem pretty easy to deal with so that is
good.  I'm hoping I don't have to open it up again, will check the
connector and TCM then, which seems relatively easy to get at too.

you can buy a cheap little steam generator at a restaurant auction or
even a small boiler, heat your building and have steam to clean cars,
floor, upholstery, or whatever.

Some ancient old Bissell, I think. Rarely gets used, I have to scrape the dust
off of it when I get it out.

Had to do some repairs to it as well, It had been sitting so long that a kink
in a hose that supplied the hot water to the pump had developed. It was right
next to a hose barb at the end of the hose, so I just snipped about 1/2” off

2019-05-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Does Michigan still have concrete freeways?
New England doesn't although I still remember the days of the "clunk clunk,
clunk clunk." down the road. Here where frost heaving is an issue it would get
worse every year even after paving over. They finally pulled all the concrete
in the '90s.

In theory, that should be just within the 5000lb braked limit.

The ML gives me the impression that it's SWB and on the tall side, I'm not sure
if the tongue weight of a heavy trailer could induce hobby horsing on freeway
expansion strips. OTOH, maybe your freeways don't induce galloping like
Michigan freeways do.
The dolly is pretty much all push/pull, there's no noticeable up/down action on
the towing vehicle.

I believe that is correct. The issue on the 164 is the stability control nanny,
braking controller, and light circuit and sensors, and who knows what else. The
magic box deals with all that stuff. I saw somewhere that this 99 I have is
not concerned with those things but I cannot say with certainty but it seems to
make sense.

2019-05-14 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
My 16’ double 3500lb axle trailer weighs 1800lb but only has a 5000lb tongue
(is that the trailer part?). The shop I bought it from said if I brought it to
them they’d weld up a 7000lb tongue to it. So technically I guess it should
only have a 3200lb load but I have hauled 126 SELs which are probably quite a
bit more than 3200.

Re: [MBZ] ML for Towing?

2019-05-14 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I put a Curt hitch on the W164 for a bike rack. it mounted to the factory
points. To hook in lights and to make the nannies happy you need a $2k
controller. Factory tow package has all that so if you want to tow you should
get one with that.

This 163 I have has a hitch and light connector, I don’t think it has caring
nannies.

I believe Rich said something about turning off the nannies in a later model
W164 at a non trivial cost.

My W163, a 2003 ML350, has ESP and 4Matic but it doesn't care if I'm towing a
2900lb car on a 400lb dolly. Within a week of buying it, I drove it to
Cleveland to pick up a Cruze. The only issues were the usual ones involving
trying to get to Cleveland on rough roads with a bouncing empty dolly behind
me. It's rated for 5000lb, but wears a class II Curt hitch rated at 3500lb.
The hitch looks as solid as the 5000lb Draw-Tite version to me, but the
Draw-Tite comes with two pieces of steel angle to reinforce the ML's frame. I
don't know if MLs with factory towing package come with those reinforcements or
not. I'd tow the W140 with the ML and not worry about ripping the rear
crossmember off the ML's chassis. I've only towed Cruzes, but I would tow a 210
or 140 if the need arose.
