I hate that too, but we have a combo convection/air fryer countertop unit and
at least it does get used pretty often. The worst are appliance "gadgets"
taking up space but that you never use because they are only useful for *one*
thing.

Every microwave oven I've ever examined had three different
switches in series with the current to the main guts. What you
describe should not be possible, unless some cheap-ass really
compromised on the essential safety of the design.

However you dispose of this POS, make sure you completely
disable it before it gets out of your control. It's f'n dangerous

different.

You're essentially talking about a combo toaster oven/microwave.

We have a combo toaster oven/convection oven/air fryer. The air fryer part is
pretty garbage, it works okay but is too small to cook a useful volume of
anything. The convection oven part works pretty well for reheating things like
fries. The toaster works as well as any other toaster oven I've ever used...

However, high-voltage vacuum tubes can generate ionizing radiation,
and not necessarily on purpose, so that is something to beware of.
I don't know how likely magnetrons are to generate it, of course.

But your dental X-ray generator is a HV vacuum tube, and it does
it plenty, on purpose. Old tube TV's were known to generate X-rays,
usually out of the horizontal deflection tube, not the picture tube.
(Picture tubes had lead-glass faces, IIRC.)

The old-school half-wave rectifier magnetron power supply can only draw
significant power from the line during a portion of the cycle, that around
the peak voltage in one direction only. Microwaves basically are only generated
part of the time.

Using a more sophisticated power supply, such as the newer inverter technology,
the magnetron can be made to supply continuous microwaves, pumping a lot more
heat into the target per unit time. Greater than 2x, assuming the same 20A
circuit
limitations of house wiring. (Amana made 220V industrial microwaves that were
considerably more powerful than the consumer appliances.)

Of course, that will result in additional waste heat being generated within the
magnetron,
which has to be dealt with. You can't just finagle the power supply on your
old Amana
to double the effective power and have something that will survive.

Engineering, am I right?

Do the 33-second 1L water test on your own oven, and find out what its effective
power is for yourself. (Equivalent to a 100% efficient submerged resistance
heater.)
I used a photography thermometer, but a medical thermometer would do the trick.
You just need before and after temperatures, in degrees Fahrenheit. Multiply
the
difference by 100 for the equivalent wattage of your oven.

Not specifically for a convection combo.

My microwave is a Goldstar (I belive now the brand would be called LG) and is
about 30 years old. I don't know if current models will deliver the same
longevity but the old ones were evidently well-made.

That's what you get for not having in store pickup of appliances

last year and never unboxed them. I hope UPS didn't convert them
into scrap for me. Should have paid the $5 in gas to go pick
them up, but free shipping made me lazy.
OTOH, I bought a dehumidifier at Meijer last week and had to
return it because one of the casters was shattered from somebody
dropping the box. Two trips to the store and I ended up empty handed
because they were all gone by the time I discovered the damage.

in the market for a new microwave...I was not impressed.

So far I've been very pleased with the Amana in our
kitchen. Built like the proverbial brick s***house
inside, very repairable. Of course, it dates from
the late 70's when those things were most definitely
_not_ cheap. I've had to do some soldering and a
capacitor replacement on its power supply, other
than that it's still going strong. Made in USA.

And it doesn't beep at me. Ever. I hate beeping.

I like that feature. Many times I have finished supper or whatever,
next meal I go to put something in the wave, and there I find part of
the last meal. Oooops. Our dryer does it too, that is really annoying.

We bought a 1st generation AMANA in about 1977, cost about $800 (Real $), made
out of stainless steel, built like a Benz bank vault.

Our 2 year old Frigidaire is the hero of the kitchen. I'm amazed when I use
it. Put in left overs, push warm button and the are warm, regardless of
weight, quantity, etc. How do they do that? How do they thaw red meat
perfectly without cooking it a little?

Please don't answer these questions, I prefer to believe in magic :-0

I wish mine would work that well! The meat always gets a little browned

 It came today.

I put it on our formica counter and immediately noticed that the hard

OMG, I hope it doesn't require that you read their instructions to assemble
the thing!

The Thermomix cooks by oneself...prepares dishes, also time-consuming,
easier and faster than you are accustomed of the traditional cuisine. The
several times patented all-in-one-concept...allows weighing, cutting,
chaffing, kneading, stirring and heating...recipes succeed always and taste
brilliant. By using the Varoma you cook vitamin-protecting, healthy and
delicious - just your family's fancy.
