Re: [MBZ] OT - MIG welders
that was sort of what I did the first time. hit the scap yard for some decent pieces of metal to practice running beads. wasn't always straight, but after fiddling with the controls I figured out what gets me a decent bead and good penetration. I also discovered there is a grease you can use that you dip the gun in to cut down on splatter. 69 280 SEL 120,000 Miles 72 350SL 108,000 Miles 2004 VW Passat 4 Motion 1999 Mazda Miata -Original Message- From: JJJ <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Mercedes mailing list <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Fri, 25 Nov 2005 18:33:00 -0800 Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT - MIG welders when i got my mig welder i just picked up pieces of scrap from the shop and started playing with the controls on the welder...just making nothing. after awhile, i sensed which levels and which angles of attack made something... later i learned that if you want to weld copper, you get copper wire and argon...and then i made copper nothings for awhile... and if you want to weld aluminum...buy a tip gun but, at long last, use the sob...make a mess...then get to the job at hand ___ For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net ___ Try the New Netscape Mail Today! I used to be pretty good with rusty exhaust systems - I got all the jobs in the shop for the cheap customers who wouldn't replace the old pipes. Now I'm becoming one of them -- -- > Not really, it just spatters and doesn't weld until you do burn through > all the rust. Re: [MBZ] OT - MIG welders
Would it be easier to weld rusty exhaust pipes with MIG than with an Oxy/acet. torch ?? Seems like it wouldn't burn as much. Mig (with shield gas) is super/mega/hyper easy, but Oxy/Ace brazing can be maddeningly tricky for a novice, so if you can do the latter, the former will be a breeze. I just use my Oxy/Ace torch for cutting or heating stubborn fasteners, and do all my metal bonding work with the Mig setup. you won't be able to weld certain metals without gas, but if its just simple body and frame work there is no need for using gas 69 280 SEL 120,000 Miles 72 350SL 108,000 Miles 2004 VW Passat 4 Motion 1999 Mazda Miata -Original Message- From: dave walton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Mercedes mailing list <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Fri, 25 Nov 2005 15:44:04 -0500 Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT - MIG welders Both those units claim to be able to use flux core wire. Re: [MBZ] OT - MIG welders
Same as most things - bigger is better. Spend the bit extra and get a 220V machine with variable heat and wire speed. I have a small 110V unit with variable wire speed and 2 heat settings. I am watching for a good deal on a bigger and better one.I would have been smarter and it would have cost me less in the long run if I had just bought the better one first time out. You also want the shielding gas if you are going to do bodywork. I'm thinking one might be useful - but have only ever done oxy/acetylene welding. Is it something you can learn by doing, or should one take a class? I was in much the same place a while ago. I just dove in on my first project, recognizing that it might take awhile to learn it. So far, so good. I bought a book or two to read up on it. -- Jim

Re: [MBZ] OT - MIG welders
Mig welding is one of the easiest to learn, but the trick to using a mig welder is knowing the different settings used on the welder for the metal you are welding. There are different speed settings for the wire feed and heat. Some of the cheaper models are don't use gas and they plug right into a standard 110V outlet like the one you are looking at. I have used a migwelder for more than 20 years (mines a Walker) and its one of the better investments I've made. I basically taught myself to use it through different jobs I had in the past. Most of them will have straight forward instructions on how to set it up for what you want to weld. Once you use it you will wonder why you didn't get one before. BTW, make sure you get a good face shield, heavy welders gloves and maybe a welders aprin. Been burned a few times and its not a pleasant experience. 69 280 SEL 120,000 Miles 72 350SL 108,000 Miles 2004 VW Passat 4 Motion 1999 Mazda Miata -Original Message- From: OK Don <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Mercedes mailing list <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Fri, 25 Nov 2005 12:37:08 -0600 Subject: [MBZ] OT - MIG welders Anyone have an opinion on these? http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=6098 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=6271 I'm thinking one might be useful - but have only ever done oxy/acetylene welding.
