Actually, thinking about it a bit more, it'd depend on which engine. I *think* that late a car could still come with the W8 engine which I suspect is really shoehorned into the car. Its not long (W8 remember) but its fat. Google tells me 2006 is a B6 (6th generation). I know nothing about those but the B5 TDI engines were inline in the Passat while they were transverse in all the other cars. The B5 Passat TDI is much easier to work on as a result. -Curt On Friday, June 4, 2021, 4:57:15 PM EDT, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: Friend just told me he had to remove the whole front bumper cover assembly and loosen a motor mount and jack up the engine in order to change a headlight bulb in a 2006 VW Passat. I doubt that one, I've never worked on a Passat but headlights on my '98 Jetta and Angie's 2005 Golf aren't that bad. The driver's side of the Golf is a challenge because its tight up against the battery but I've done it. Haven't had to change the bulbs on the 2015 Jetta yet. I don't remember the MGC being too bad - it was tighter at the firewall, byt I don't have any bad memories from working on them. I was working at a "foreign car garage" putting myself through college in the late 60's, early '70's, and saw a lot of MGs, Triumphs, Jags, VWs, Fiats, Simcas, and the occasional MB and Jap cars. Your comment about lawyers brought back a memory of when I sold it. First, I took the guy for a ride, and demonstrated what it would do, with all the cautions I had gained from learning how to aim it and pray.. then, we swapped seats and I became the passenger, which was the first time I had ever ridden in the pax seat.. I can tell you without hesitation, it was completely terrifying to be a passenger with it at the hands of someone who really did not yet have a feel for the little monster. The ride concluded at the notary office where it was cash, title, signatures, and bye bye.. good luck! I never saw it again. I had an english car period where I bought them, rewired them, made them actually work, then drove and sold them. One that I did that was the most outrageous and fun [young man fun] was an MGA that had a blown engine and transmission.. body was "OK" ... so, being adventurous and inventive, I stuffed a pumped up Ford 289 with a 4 speed manual transmission and a narrowed and locked Ford rear end into it.. The first drive convinced me, I needed to buy more life insurance... a lot more, soon. The difference between traction and loss of pavement contact was a total function of throttle position. It would do donuts in a 4 lane street, in traffic, just by snapping the throttle, in any gear.. So, I added a length of railroad track under the rear bumper at the rear of the frame to try to make the rear end "stick", about 250 lbs worth.. That helped just enough that driving went from "aim and pray" to "aim and hope" which usually worked... with caution. Tire smoke burnouts lasted until the tires blew out, if you stayed on the throttle and had enough real estate to try to aim it... Too bad this was in the days before GoPro cameras were invented. Nothing left but memories.Fortunately, it was before tickets bought you points against your license, so you paid the fine and went back to it. Between tires and tickets, I sold it to some lucky guy... have no idea what ever came of it. There's an MG of some sort for sale near here. Restoring old MGs and selling them appears to be the retirement hobby of the seller, three or four times a year a different one (always just one) appears on his front lawn with a "for sale" sign. I've never looked at them closely but from drive-by appraisals he appears to do nice work. One of my boys is itching to get one of them, I keep trying to dissuade him from buying anything old and British, especially paying a top price for something old and British, since it would be a car he would use as a daily driver. I should have him watch the Top Gear episode where the guys put three different British Leyland cars through their trials. While I don’t have a huge affinity for British sports cars, I’ve always thought that the Triumph TR3 would be a cool car to have. It somewhat resembles the bug-eyed Sprite. I was doing some work at Wallops Island for the nearby Naval Surface Weapons facility, and a guy I worked with there had a TR3 completely disassembled for restoration in his garage. He had gotten bored with the project and asked me if I wanted it for $3k. I went so far as to inspect it and check everything out, which was well catalogued and sorted (he was an engineer) but I couldn’t figure out a way to get everything back to WI for a reasonable price or minimal effort. Amazing price. I have a bugeye setting in one of my storage vans, with [If I recall correctly] two spare engines and a load of other spares. It was last used as a race car, and has been in my storage/ownership for over 10 years. It's been on the "when I get around to it list" ... and I've never gotten "around to it".. At the prices currently... Perhaps I should move it up the work list.. I had a friend who was restoring one, back in the day. I replaced the entire wiring harness in one afternoon. They were fun cars.
