HAA! Funny - the dog riding on the rig. I always get my hopes up when I hear
about possible setups that would allow me to let (note, I said let, not
make) my dog pull me along on wheels.

Aside from making my own, the closest I've been able to come is a rig that
dog-sledders use when there's no snow.

Although, there is an accepted sport or passtime, the name of which I
forget, where larger dogs pull their owners in one or two-seat carts.
Rottweilers are commonly used, as are many of the big draft types. My
deceptively powerful Dobie would love it, and so would my arms and knees.

My wife's ire gets right up whenever I mention it. She would be mortified
were I to roll around the neighborhood, my dog pulling me in a cart. Man, I
want it though.

Actually, a stripped 4 wheel ATV would do nicely too, but would take up lots
of sidewalk space. The stability and brakes would be awesome for when pooch
bolts off to the side after squirrels and rabbits.

Well, my guide dog pulls me around on my feet, so why not on wheels?
Seriously, I've thought about rigging up some sort of trailer to take him
along on bike rides, talk about resistance training! IT would be difficult
pulling a 100LB Lab around! The rear platform (not on my 3 year old bike,
but standard equipment on new models) isn't quite large enough for the
Joeldog.

Nor was the rear fender on my Sportster, but that didn't stop me from
attaching a plastic crate and taking my 95 lb. Dobie with me wherever I
went, including on I-95. I know, stupid, but somebody was looking out for us
- we enjoyed many hundreds of miles that way. I didn't have a four-wheeled
vehicle I could use at the time, and I was on fire for doing the dog
obedience show circuit.

Yes, it must be hard to picture. I mounted it with its length running
perpendicular to the length of the bike. It made a nice back rest for me.
Also, it was a crate just barely big enough to fit the dog, not one suitable
for normal, long-term use. And, like most dobies, mine liked to curl up into
a small package (I gave him the middle name bean because he looked like a
coffee bean when he'd curl up like that).

So yes, it was a squeeze. The looks I'd get were usually either big smiles
and laughs, or looks of disbelief.

I did prefer to be on the bike when he'd load up. Otherwise, yes, I feared
he would tip the bike over.

Reminds me of one night that I'd taken him to a meeting of the Baltimore
doberman club. The ladies had to come out after the meeting and see how I
got him there on my motorcycle. I told him to load up and he hesitated. I
told him again, and again he hesitated. I encoraged him again and he finally
went in, but a bit slowly. Suddenly I realized that I had left my leather
jacket and my helmet in there. What a good boy!! I felt bad after that.

Yeah, one of those things with dogs. You may mistakenly think at first that
they're being bad, but they turn out to have a good excuse. You can just
hope that you haven't cursed at them too badly. The tough thing is 99
percent of the time, they are actually being bad.

So Joel sounds like a great dog. I haven't researched or had experience with
guide dogs. I know that they're supposed to stop at curbs and in so doing
let you know where the curb is? But what about where there is a less
well-defined crossing into the path of traffic? Like a dirt path that
crosses a road or something like that. Does that just boil down to a riskier
situation?
