Maybe 87-89-93 is the offering here also, I'll have to check again next time I
fill up. I know of one place that sells E85, they also sell a "super premium"
that I thought was 93 but maybe it's higher. It's over $5/gallon whatever it
is. Maybe ethanol free as well.

The way I remember it, the M112 used to pollute its catalytic converters
if you ran it on 87. Perhaps the newer engines would be less pollutive,
or maybe the newer cats would be more delicate.

In Michigan the common choices are 87-89-93, or less commonly 87-90-93.
E85 is uncommon, rec 88 or rec 89 (teetotaler) is rare and usually more
expensive than 93, but cheaper than avgas.

Weird, where is it that 91 or 93 octane isn't available?

There is one rural convenience store here that only sells 87 and diesel but I
can't think of any other place that doesn't offer 87-89-91 choices.

93 is harder to find (and expensive).

IIRC, you won't get full/optimum performance on lower octane fuel, but the
computer will retard the timing to prevent blowing up the engine.

I don’t see it any differently than the same car being run on 87. I wouldn’t
advise doing it long term, but as long as you’re not mashing the throttle all
the time or running at high speeds or under heavy loads.

The ECU would compensate for any difference in fuel quality, I would expect.

Not sure why they would bother with 89 unless they can’t get 91 at all. The
cost difference is marginal.

2023-07-08 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
