Sadly, unlike his yours sounds like it's on its way out.

Don't know about thatI estimate 1/2 of that is due to a leaking front
seal and valve cover gasket...for starters. I leave small puddles wherever
I go. vbg It smokes very little too.

And I'm not going to obsess about it, either. It's paid for many years ago
and the economics of spending twice what the vehicle is worth to fix this
problem does not make good economic sense, so I'm just going to keep
driving it and enjoying it as long as I can

Anyone, What's the failure mechanism of this rod bender? Does the
engine self distruct? Just burn more oil? Throw a rod? Does anybody know?
I've spoken to Dr. Booth several times, and I know he said (and others have
repeaded), it will eventually fail, but then, most of our beloved diesel
engies will eventually fail too. If anyone knows, I'd love to hear.

What's the failure mechanism of this rod bender?

Mind you I don't have one (though I nearly did get one
of the 140's for $10k a few years ago that had a factory
replacement engine), so this hearsay, but IIRC the only
real symptom is that oil consumption goes up. Inexorably.

Personally, I'd sell it and buy something with an OM602 engine. If the
engine goes while you own it, you'll lose your investment as the car
will become almost worthless.

There is a chance that one of the previous owners had your engine
replaced with an updated one.

Ya, first thing I'd do is go to a dealer and ask for the service log on the car.
If no engine replacement is listed, the rods are only like $200 each, and a
gasket set is another $200. So it's up to you whether you want to cross your
fingers and drive, throw in a set of rods for insurance, or sell it.

So, that's all that's needed? New rods, bearings and gaskets? No
machining? No pistons? Main brgs?

I recall hearing about wiring harness problems and other problems - but I
thought the engine fix was more complicated than that -
