That's the bad thing about high blood pressure, you don't feel bad when it's in
the danger zone. You feel bad when you have damaged your heart or had a stroke
of some sort.

I can tell if mine is up -- I'm all fired up and ready to go at things. When
it's "normal" my butt is dragging and all I want to do is take a nap.

Re: [MBZ] The cath is done

2017-11-16 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
"idopathic ventricular insufficiency" as the official diagnosis, but my
cardiologist said that there are a number of virus infections that can cause
heart troubles.

Some of them infect the heart muscle directly, causing weakness and possible
permanent damage, and others have surface proteins similar to heart muscle
(particularly left ventricle muscle fibers, which are unique in the body) and
infection causes auto-immune attacks on the fibers while the virus is active.

Sadly, by the time the damage shows up by someone getting sick enough to feel
bad enough to go to the ER or doctor's office, the virus is long gone. I was
treated for three or four weeks for pneumonia before I was diagnosed at the ER
with heart failure, and I think that was only because I complained for
tightness in my upper chest due to fluid accumulation in the lungs.

My only other symptoms were some fluid collection around my ankles (much less
than I've had recently from a broken ankle taking forever to heal) and an
enlarged heart and shortness of breath along with a persistent cough. All but
the fluid accumulation is typical of pneumonia, same fluid collection on the
lungs.

I felt fine after a couple hits of Lasix via IV and losing about four liters of
fluids in an hour or two, the swelling in my legs that only showed up the day I
went in to the ER was gone by the time I got upstairs to my room.

Recovery took about nine months, the first six were very long. Really sucks to
have to sit and rest a while after walking to your car after work before you
can drive home Basically whatever was damaging the muscle stopped, and my
left ventricle recovered and grew more muscle without scarring.

My heart recovered almost completely, although last time I had an EKG the Dr
said I have a right bundle branch block (that was not there when I had surgery
on the ankle six weeks earlier -- I think it was the anesthetic, which takes me
six or eight weeks to completely shake).

BP was VERY low while I was sick (for me, anyway -- 118/70), went back up to
220/110 on my last visit to the electrocardiologist. Normal for me is 145/90,
been that way since 1977. Needless to say, I'm still on a beta blocker and
Lisinopril.

for how the ventricles contract. Normal "ejection fraction" -- the fraction of the blood

in" on itself and squeeze the blood out nicely, with the walls becoming convex toward the

contracting very well at all, and was well above normal size. Everything else was fine, and I had
good turbulence, so no blood thinners.

Last time I was in, just about two years ago, all was back to near normal.

Re: [MBZ] The cath is done

2017-11-15 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
My little ordeal was a little different with similar results.
On July 25th, I️ woke up at 0100 with a ridiculous pain under my left shoulder
blade that was making my left arm numb and tingling and the numbness was
radiating up my neck. It hurt like hell. I️ wasn’t too worried since the source
of the pain, I️ felt, was back under my shoulder blade not in my chest. So I️
messed around all night trying to get comfortable and finally at 0400, I️ went
to the ER.
When I️ got to the ER and described my situation to the nurse, they started
fetchin’ and gettin’ and whisked me off thinking I️ was having a heart attack.
I️ assured them I️ was pretty sure it was not but they were unwavering say,””
“with a man your age, we have to make sure it’s not.
Long story short, I️ was admitted and spent all day getting every imaginable
test and scan while resting with an IV dripping something in that made the hurt
go away. The result was that my heart is in perfect condition. The cardiologist
was amazed. This, coupled with my nice BP and low resting heart rate she
wondered what I️ did. When I️ told her CrossFit, she told me a man my age
shouldn’t do CrossFit.
So, they 86ed me and within 15 minutes of the IV needle being pulled out, the
pai came charging back. Turns out it was a wicked pinched nerve somewhere in
the knitted muscles in my shoulder. A constricted nerve glide. Still recovering
from it. PT gal says it was not CF related.
And, in case anyone wonders, dry needling is awesome and it works.

I had a neighbor who was our family pediatrician that taught me biofeedback. I
didn’t buy into it at first until she showed me how to do it and actually saw
the results.

Keep in mind that if you’re seriously stressed or have other medical issues it
won’t make a significant difference, or maybe have no effect at all. There are
limitations.

Maybe I should try the biofeedback -- my pulse has always been fast (about 100
resting) and BP has been 140 over 70 and up since I was in college.

Runs in the family, too, my niece is exactly the same, and when they stuff
enough medicine down me to lower it, I pass out and can't think.

Re: [MBZ] The cath is done

2017-11-15 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Good report, except for the enlarged heart -- sounds a great deal like my
experience a couple years ago.

The echo cardiogram will tell all -- including thickened walls from chronic
high BP, viral damage (which was my problem), and any valve issues.

If you get a chance to watch (sometimes you do, sometimes you don't get to see
the screen), look for how the ventricles contract. Normal "ejection fraction"
-- the fraction of the blood actually pumped out each beat -- is 55% to 60%.
You should see the left ventricle "collapse in" on itself and squeeze the blood
out nicely, with the walls becoming convex toward the cavity. When I was
really sick, my left ventricle looked like a water balloon and wasn't
contracting very well at all, and was well above normal size. Everything else
was fine, and I had good turbulence, so no blood thinners.

Last time I was in, just about two years ago, all was back to near normal.

I’ve always had a fairly low resting pulse and blood pressure. Just had an
insurance company workup this morning and my resting pulse was 52 and my BP was
101 over 57.

When I was younger I did a lot of biofeedback to keep my pulse rate down. It’s
worked well for me ever since. If I feel myself getting stressed I can get my
BP and pulse rate back down pretty quick.

No, just focused. Anyone can do this, one simply needs to decide that
health is important.

progressively add weight until that is up to about 50 lbs or so.

My resting pulse is 55 bpm, last time I checked on the automated blood
pressure machine in my building: 98 over 50something.

2017-11-15 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Question for the medically inclined members of the list:

Would a nuclear stress test have given similar information to what Kaleb
learned today, or is that for a different set of symptoms?

I'm thinking my stress test was probably less stressful than Kaleb's roto
rooter job, but if something was wrong, they could have fixed Kaleb during the
testing.

One odd thing about my nuclear stress test:
I took daily half hour walks in the four months between my first stress test
and the nuclear test. My pulse hit 176 in the initial test. At the start of the
treadmill session where they injected the dye, they told me that they'd take me
to the same stress level as in my original test. When we got to where they
halted my first test, my pulse was about 150, and I could talk at a
conversational level. "Hey, what are you shutting me down now for, I'm not even
beginning to feel stressed". Cardiologist swore that a pulse of 150 was plenty
stressful, and that the test conclusively showed no cardiac damage.
I'm still alive 2 years later, so I must be OK.

Subject: [MBZ] The cath is done

Just got home from the hospital. The dr said I have nice clear arteries with no
blockage at all. The stress test was a false positive. At least we know for
sure now. The symptoms were most likely from the high blood pressure. She did
say it appears my heart is enlarged but it could have been the dye making it
appear that way. I have a sonogram or whatever it is week after next to check
that out.
