Someone told me that I had to use the directory global to set up the path to the directory of the application (because even the full path didn't work) and since then I've managed a consistent application launching on WinX (any windows: 98 or NT or 2K). Open Process does NOT work consistently on WinNT as far as I've tried (and I've tried A LOT to find the consistencies of which I found none). The directory didn't seem to improve things either. Last but not least, I need to launch these commands with parameters as in DOS, so Open Process will not help... So when one command works, why does the shell command stay stuck on receiving a message if there is none? Maybe cmd.exe doesn't return anything and it hangs waiting... Maybe my question should be: Is there a way to tell the shell command that it's just a one way call? NT question launching programs
Title: Newbie Question - Player volume I've solve all the program launching problems I had (on windows). But on Windows NT when I launch a program using the shell command, sometimes Metacard is stuck waiting until I close that program - which is not very handy... Im using cmd.exe already... Does anyone know a work around? Thanks Xavier

My students download the stacks (course ware for language studies) from Internet and they report back using Windows 95, 98 and NT. The stacks are also tested on Mac 68k and PowerPC (the last is my daily work station). I am very happy with MetaCard (despite a rather steep learning phase for me as a longtime SuperCard scripter). RE: NT ?
I run Metacard to manage disk space and production server applications in an ultra-secured environment with NT4 sp5, NT2k, Metaframe, PCA9, and it runs like a charm. The res kit can be easily controlled. Saves a lot cmds! SP6 is just around the corner on some of our servers so I haven't tried it yet, but it shouldn't be a problem. Haven't tried W2kSP1 either... cheers, Xavier > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Scott Raney > Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2000 8:03 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: NT ? > > > On Thu, 21 Sep 2000 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > > > > I have a MC program written in 2.2.5. RE: problems launching programs on Windows (NT or 98)
problem solved (somewhat). on winNT you have to use the pushD and popD before and after the command you launch. It works for the cmd bat I made. Not yet for the MetaCard implementation but I'll nail it! For example this works... pushD c:\adsm\baclient c:\adsm\baclient\dsm.exe popd it still doesn't work running directly from MC but with the cmd next to MC it works great... Win NT Network MC Issues?
Hi I'm considering developing some educational material for deployment on networks such as those based on NT Server and NT Workstations. Are there any issues related to installing either a standalone exe built with MC or with a server mounted copy of the Player and a series of MC stacks? Did you you transfer the program by CD? Do any of the files have to be written to? If so, the CD transfer may have made them read-only, which could explain the hanging. Metacard on Window NT
I am not an expert on Windows and not at all an networks. My question to our experts: does Metacard run under win NT? I developed a standalone with win 98, but a friend told me, under win NT the program hung up totally. (The standalone gets text from other stacks in the same folder.) What I have found with another tool is that apps developed under NT will work on other Win32, but apps developed on other Win32 will not necessarily work with NT. For instance if one is using 16-bit external C code objects, they'll probably function adequately under 9x, but fail under NT. And if any part of your code attempts to access hardware directly, NT will kill it, since that is strictly forbidden in the microkernel architecture. Also, as Scott mentioned, securities and permissions are important. Also, NTFS-formatted drive slices > 4 Gb in size might be incorrectly reporting themselves to your app, causing it to hang up while it tries to figure out how to run on a drive with something like -2584629593 Mb available. A rule of thumb to *always* follow with app development is "port early, port often". Assuming that just because an app works on one system it will work on all is a costly mistake. For instance I'd bet you're looking at a completed app here. Deconstructing it to find the source of the trouble could take many times longer than it would have done to just go back and forth as you built, confirming functionality. (Ouch.) I know that MS claims, more or less, that the Win32 API is consistent across their 3.75 flavors of it, but Microsoft, inarguably, is staffed by liars. You can't trust anything they tell you. I don't know that anyone's going to be able to help you find the problem... at least not without some more details, such as where the app is hanging, how "hard" it's hung, system environment ("Win98" is not a description of a system environment) and so on... --WthmO

Applications developed under NT have also worked flawlessly on all client machines (NT, 95, 98) including server delivery over their networks. Sorry, but it works. Scot et al will surely point to an answer, but the amount of available memory does come to mind... I believe NT requires about twice as much as win95/98 to run programs, so 4Mb available on your machine would need to be 8Mb on theirs. Hanging suggests lack of brain cells to me. There should be no problem running under NT, and in fact it is much less likely to cause problems there. Screen and printer driver bugs are incredibly common on Windows 98 (much more so than on Windows 95 or NT), and we get regular reports of problems displaying images and even crashing on Windows 98 (the crashes always point to some module named X.DRV, which is a Windows driver). Setting acceleration to its lowest level using the Display control panel eliminates the problems in all cases we know of. What's even more amazing is that these bugs occur even in some of the sample apps and games that are bundled on the Windows 98 installation CD! And just to get this into the archives, we've had several reports of problems installing the Starter Kit on Windows 98. In all of these cases, the problem is that there are too many files in some standard Windows directory (the root directory, the \Windows directory, or more commonly the \Windows\Temp directory). You might look out for this if any of your users report trouble installing your package, or if you ever have trouble installing some other app on Windows 98. As for your NT problem, I'd check for some differences in where the program is installed or what system resources it's accessing. While not as common as under UNIX, it's not unusual for a program to fail under NT because it's mucking around with the registry or some system file or directory that the current user doesn't have permission to access.
