Hi all.
I'm heading home in the morning with a bag full of meteorites. Ok, it's a
small bag but I'm happy. I got 6 complete individuals and a fractured
specimen. I interviewed some of the locals as well as hunters and should
have at least a couple of good stories/videos!

I'm not sure (nor is anyone else) why the dog decided to pick up the
meteorite. However, the owners gladly wrote out a nice little story about
how it happened and for everyone dying to know, the meteorite found by the
dog was purchased by my friend Rob Wessel.

 Hi Rubin and all,

One hundred and fifty years ago, a stone fell in
Bethlehem, New York on August 11 that also involved a
meteorite finding dog, apparently not as well trained as the
West, Texas dog. C.U. Shepard wrote:

“Mr. Vanderpool was at work near his house, and
heard the explosion in common with other members of his
family. About two minutes after, as it appeared to him, a
stone, coming in an oblique course, struck the side
of a wagon house, glanced off, hit a log upon the
ground, bounded again, and rolled into the grass. A dog
lying in the doorway of the wagon house sprang up, darted
out and seized it, but dropped it immediately, probably on
account of its warmth and sulphurous small.”

And of course there's the story about the dog that
found the Lost City meteorite in January, 1970. Must have
been too heavy to carry so he just marked it,
probably so he could find it again. ;-)

There is indeed a meteorite finding dog!

Here's the story. On Friday Sonny, Steve Arnold
and I drove into the strewn
field bright and early and immediately started
knocking on doors to try to gain
permission to hunt. Upon walking up to a particular
house Sonny spotted a
meteorite on the porch (about 70-90 grams) he picked
it up, and laid it back
down. Ruben, did you see that fully crusted
meteorite on the porch?
He Said. I couldn't believe it. He was right!
Right there on the porch but
no one was home...what to do? Since Sonny assured me
that he wasn't going to
buy meteorites when he could find them I decided to
track down the owner and try
 to buy the specimen.

I got the owners work phone number from a neighbor and
called. After
introducing myself and explaining what I was in town
for, I told the owner that
there was a meteorite on their porch. What, you
mean that black rock that
the dog brought up and dropped on the porch?
Yes, that one I
 said.

Needless to say, I drove down and did a nice video
interview with the owner
holding the space rock and recalling the tale.

Martin,

The dog's name is Hopper. The story actually very very funny. A group of
us were gridding a piece of ground yesterday, walking in a line, and Rob told
part of the story and I was in tears it was so funny.

Rob has acquired the Garza Stone of the West fall. Or should I say, the
Monahan's 7 Stone of West fall. Or Maybe the Michelle Knapp Stone of the
West fall.

I don't think anyone in our field could find a better match than this
specific rock and this collector/dealer being put together.

Congratulations to Rob! Well done.

As for photos, I am sure Hopper will be going down in meteorite history
forever. There will be no shortage of photos of this dog.

Yesterday Rob spent the whole day hunting with Hopper. Rob would take out a
meteorite, let hopper smell it and then pretend to throw it into the grass
hoping the dog would run into the grass, looking for that meteorite, but might
find another one and retrieve it. But no luck. Hopper was too smart to be
fooled.

There are some great stories about this rock and this dog. I am sure more
will come out soon.

I have to get back out in the field...

Pete, could you do me a favor and post this to the list? I haven’t been able
to post for a couple of years now, with no explanation as to why.

Cheers,

Howdy

I’ve just returned home from a one-day, solo scramble at West. I went with
the goal of making a rough map of the strewn field to complete a project I’ve
been working on, and hopefully to find some meteorites. I can claim victory
on the first point, but not on the second. What I can do here is report on
what the conditions are like at present.
The weather was beautiful while I was there – clear, somewhat windy, and
chilly. I wore a fleece top, jeans and long, lightweight underwear and was
good to go all day. I started with a short recon of the area on Saturday
evening and spent all day Sunday searching and talking with the locals. The
locals were marvelous – one couple gave me free reign to search their property
and a guided tour around to see the households that reported sonic booms and
even flickering lights, and to point out land where meteorites had been
collected. A few landowners didn’t want anyone on their property, and a couple
of those lay directly astride the fall line. That’s too bad, but from what I
could make out the various meteorite hunters were doing a good job of
respecting their privacy. All in all, the locals were marvelously helpful and
friendly. I don’t know what Mike Farmer was talking about with his problems
with them. I suspect that the real problem wasn’t how close they are to Waco
as he said, but rather how close they were to Mike Farmer.
I also met the dog. You know which one I mean!
There were a few groups working “on contract” with the locals to search
land. I didn’t join in, as I wanted to cover a lot of ground in other ways. I
did search along the various roads that cross the strewn field, and received
comments from passers-by several times to the tune of, “you should have been
here yesterday – there were twenty people where you’re standing!”. Great.
In the end, no meteorites for me. This time. ;-)
Oh, and the koloches were wonderful. Hadn’t had one in years!

So, good luck to those out there now – I’m jealous and seriously want to go
put a boot in various yahoos here at work who won’t give me time and resources
to join in. Apparently NASA doesn’t count finding meteorites as an especially
important endeavor. Quite a comment there.

Best of luck to you all in West, but leave some for me! ;-)

[meteorite-list] Comet Lulin Vists Inner Solar System

2009-02-24 Thread Ron Baalke

http://astronomynow.com/090223CometLulinvisitsinnerSolarSystem.html

Comet Lulin visits inner Solar System
BY DR EMILY BALDWIN
ASTRONOMY NOW
23 February, 2009

On 24 February Comet Lulin will make its first visit to the inner Solar
System, streaking past the Earth at a distance of 38 million miles, or
160 times further than the Moon.

Comet Lulin, formally known as C/2007 N3, was discovered last year by
astronomers at Taiwan's Lulin Observatory. Nicknamed the green comet,
Lulin's atmosphere contains poisonous cyanogen and diatomic carbon
gases. Researchers at the University of Leicester will be using NASA's
Swift satellite to monitor the comet in X-ray, ultraviolet and optical
light as it closes in on the Earth this week.

The wonderful ease of scheduling of Swift and its joint UV and X-ray
capability make Swift the observatory of choice for observations like
these, says Dr Julian Osborne, leader of the Swift project at
Leicester. The University of Leicester played a major role in developing
Swift's X-Ray Telescope.

This image of Comet Lulin taken 28 Jan merges data acquired by Swift's
Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (blue and green) and X-Ray Telescope
(red). At the time of the observation, the comet was 99.5 million miles
from Earth and 115.3 million miles from the Sun. Image: Univ. of
Leicester/NASA/Swift/Carter et al.

Comets are thought to represent some of the most pristine ingredients of
the Solar System. They are made up of dust, gas and ice, and as they
approach the Sun, the frozen components sublime and stream out in tails.
Swift observations of the comet on 28 January revealed that it is
certainly active. The UVOT data show that Lulin was shedding nearly 800
gallons of water each second, says team member Dennis Bodewits, a NASA
Postdoctoral Fellow at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt,
which is enough to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool in less than 15
minutes.

Although Swift can't see water directly, ultraviolet light from the Sun
quickly breaks apart water molecules into hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl
(OH) molecules, the latter of which Swift's Ultraviolet/Optical
Telescopes (UVOT) can detect. This gives us a unique view into the
types and quantities of gas a comet produces, Bodewits explains.

The images taken so far reveal a hydroxyl cloud spanning a distance
greater than the distance between Earth and the Moon, and a tail
streaming off at an angle. Solar radiation pushes the icy grains away
from the comet, and as they gradually evaporate, they create a thin tail
of hydroxyl molecules. Farther from the comet, even the hydroxyl
molecule succumbs to solar ultraviolet radiation, breaking into its
constituent oxygen and hydrogen atoms.

The solar wind - a fast-moving stream of particles from the Sun -
interacts with the comet's broader cloud of atoms, says Stefan Immler,
also at Goddard. This causes the solar wind to light up with X-rays,
and that's what Swift's XRT sees. This interaction, called charge
exchange, results in X-rays from most comets when they pass within about
three times Earth's distance from the Sun. Because Lulin is so active
and is losing a lot of gas, its X-ray emitting region extends in a large
cloud far sunward of the comet. The team hope that the forthcoming
observations of Lulin will reveal more on the comet's chemistry and
enable scientists to build up a three-dimensional picture of the comet
during its maiden voyage through the Solar System.

Comet Lulin will be visible to the naked eye, and for most locations in
the Northern Hemisphere will be easiest to spot after midnight when it
is high in the sky. In small telescopes it will appear as a dim fuzzy
star - brighter in the centre and more diffuse around the edges. It
will fade from view by mid-March.

The
locals were marvelous – one couple gave me free reign to search their
property and a guided tour around to see the households that reported sonic
booms and even flickering lights, and to point out land where meteorites had
been collected. A few landowners didn’t want anyone on their property, and a
couple of those lay directly astride the fall line. That’s too bad, but from
what I could make out the various meteorite hunters were doing a good job of
respecting their privacy.

There were a few groups working “on contract” with the locals to search land.
I didn’t join in, as I wanted to cover a lot of ground in other ways. I did
search along the various roads that cross the strewn field, and received
comments from passers-by several times to the tune of, “you should have been
here yesterday – there were twenty people where you’re standing!”. Great. In
the end, no meteorites for me. This time. ;-)

Oh, and the koloches were wonderful. Hadn’t had one in years!

So, good luck to those out there now – I’m jealous and seriously want to go
put a boot in various yahoos here at work who won’t give me time and
resources to join in. Apparently NASA doesn’t count finding meteorites as an
especially important endeavor. Quite a comment there.

Best of luck to you all in West, but leave some for me! ;-)

 Hi all.
I'm heading home in the morning with a bag full of
meteorites. Ok, it's a small bag but I'm happy. I
got 6 complete individuals and a fractured specimen. I
interviewed some of the locals as well as hunters and should
have at least a couple of good stories/videos!

I'm not sure (nor is anyone else) why the dog decided
to pick up the meteorite. However, the owners gladly wrote
out a nice little story about how it happened and for
everyone dying to know, the meteorite found by the dog was
purchased by my friend Rob Wessel.

There is indeed a meteorite finding dog!

Here's the story. On Friday Sonny, Steve
 Arnold
and I drove into the strewn
field bright and early and immediately started
knocking on doors to try to gain
permission to hunt. Upon walking up to a
 particular
  house Sonny spotted a
meteorite on the porch (about 70-90 grams) he
 picked
it up, and laid it back
down. Ruben, did you see that fully crusted
  meteorite on the porch?
He Said. I couldn't believe it. He was right!
Right there on the porch but
no one was home...what to do? Since Sonny assured
 me
  that he wasn't going to
buy meteorites when he could find them I decided
 to
track down the owner and try
   to buy the specimen.

I got the owners work phone number from a
 neighbor and
  called. After
introducing myself and explaining what I was in
 town
for, I told the owner that
there was a meteorite on their porch. What,
 you
  mean that black rock that
the dog brought up and dropped on the
 porch?
  Yes, that one I
   said.

Needless to say, I drove down and did a nice
 video
  interview with the owner
holding the space rock and recalling the tale.

[meteorite-list] Texas fall strewn field

2009-02-24 Thread mexicodoug

Hi List,

I heard some large stones were found near Buffalo, but it really
doesn't make much sense... probably rumors.

If anyone wants to kindly share their coordinates, we will be
publishing a strewn field map of the portion of the first recovered
stones in about one month. It would be great if anyone would augment
the strewn field information with the extended information. It will not
be shared with anyone until publication (unless you are sharing it in
advance), this on my honor.

We have no plans to search in Texas during the interim time, and the
medium term conditions aren't overly favorable for this location. Our
work finished last Friday and we are all very satisfied and keeping our
fingers crossed that much more material is recovered before planting,
plowing, raining, etc..., and maybe we can even buy a little more.
Anything provided with be gratefully acknowledged to the provider of
the info by name. If not enough is provided it will not be published
(have just under a week), and won't go past me, but definitely ours
will.

Good luck in the field,

Aloha from old Mexico,
Doug

[meteorite-list] West, Texas meteorite update

2009-02-24 Thread Michael Farmer
Back in the hotel in Waco tonight after a long day. I was in Fort Worth last
night, taking Moritz Karl back to the airport for his long overdue flight back
to Germany and to have breakfast and visit with Dr. Arthur Ehlmann at TCU. I
presented Art a 13 gram complete West meteorite today, for the Monnig
Collection. I could not bear the thought of TCU without a piece of this
meteorite on display. We printed out the find photos and when I left they were
preparing to get it ready for display in their New Acquisitions section.
People had already been calling and stopping by asking if they had any of it.
Now they do.

I then drove as fast as I could back to West to begin hunting again. Robert and
Shauna called me just as I was arriving and told me they gained access to hunt
a parcel of land we calculated was in the middle of the flight path. I got
there, changed clothes and talked to them for a few minutes, then started
hunting. I was returning to the car less than 5 minutes later and found a 69
gram perfect complete stone on the edge of the gravel driveway. It had embedded
itself in the soft soil of the fence-line. Everyone else got skunked there as
we hunted for hours after that and nothing more was found.

People are already dropping out like flies today, as several I spoke to said
tomorrow was their last day. Meteorite hunting is not that easy sometimes, but
at least virtually everyone has stones to take home, and heads full of great
memories.

I myself plan to remain another week, as I can't stand the thought of these
perfect meteorites being lost to the plow, rain, or growing grass. Anything not
found now will never be found.

More tomorrow.
