[meteorite-list] Beware misrepresented Sericho on eBay
Hi Listees, If you see thin-sliced Sericho that is clear-coated on eBay, beware. There are several (?) sellers on eBay offering nice-looking Sericho pieces that allow light to pass through the crystals, and the specimens have been clear-coated with an acrylic-type substance. The listings are all very similar, use similar wording and have similar photos, but are being offered by multiple sellers. The misrepresentation is the location of the seller. The seller claims to be inside the US and says the item will be shipped from the US. This is not true. These sellers are located in China and ship from China. Their claim of shipping from the US is a lie. Before you are tempted to buy one of these specimens, contact the seller and verify that the item will be shipped from the US. If the seller does not reply at all, that is a sign that the seller is lying. I tried contacting two of them this week and asked them to confirm their shipping location and both sellers ignored my messages. Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem buying a specimen from China if the seller was honest. But, lying right from the get go is not good sales practice and would make me suspicious about other aspects of their offerings. [meteorite-list] Fireball over Florida - and, dealers who take Bitcoin?
Hi List, This post is a two-fer. #1) Does anyone know if the recent Florida fireball was favorable to drop meteorites on land, or would they have fallen into the drink? Link - https://www.livescience.com/fireball-florida-video.html #2) Several years ago, I received a tiny amount of Bitcoin as payment for writing a blog article. It was worth about $20 then. Now, it's worth almost $200 and I would like to spend it while it's value is high. Crypto is not my thing and I just want to get rid of it and be done with it. Withdrawing it to my bank account and converting it to real currency involves a high fee, so I would rather just spend it as Bitcoin. Does anyone know of a reputable dealer based in the US (no overseas) who takes Bitcoin as payment? Or, do I need to buy a Tesla keychain with it? Thanks in advance! Hi Marco and List, I have a question about ownership and legality of these manmade artifacts that fall from space and are found on private property. What is the law regarding objects that originate from private entities? I understand that if part of a NASA object falls on your land, that it is still government property. [meteorite-list] Fake Black Beauty on eBay (and others)
I've been seeing a lot of this lately. Hijacked NWA numbers being used to sell bogus rocks. The sellers usually have a zero feedback (or low number) and the item descriptions are usually just one line with very few details. This fake Black Beauty is just the latest example. I see several similar ones per week. Most appear to be from different sellers (or accounts at least). Re: [meteorite-list] Stability of the Sericho Pallasite
Hi Michael and List, In my experience, I find that Sericho is a lot like Brenham. Most of it is prone to rust, but there are some specimens that were more stable to start with and when properly prepared those specimens tend to be hold up pretty well. But, the real test will be a few more years down the line. Sericho just hasn't been on the market long enough for long term stability to be tested, but the preliminary results don't look great. It's definitely not Seymchan, Imilac, or Esquel. [meteorite-list] Taqtaq-e Rasoul fall is approved, August 10, 2019, Iran
Hi Listees, The August 10, 2019 Taqtaq-e Rasoul fall has been approved by Met Soc. Link - https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=70632 List of all witnessed falls in the 21st century - http://galactic-stone.com/pages/falls Met Bull write-up : Taqtaq-e Rasoul 34° 36' 56"N, 45° 46' 8"E Bakhtaran, Iran Confirmed fall: 2019 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5) History: Around 07h50 local time (GMT+3.5) on 10 August 2019, residents of several villages in Dasht-e Zahab region of Kermanshah province in Iran heard loud explosions like thunder. They were followed by noises similar to flying drones. Moments later, Madam Gohari a resident of Taqtaq-e Rasoul village (next to a hill with a similar name) noticed an object fall in their family yard, producing dust and getting dogs excited, surrounding it. After receiving a call from his mother about the event, Saman Gohari arrived at the site after 20 '. Informed about meteorites, he collected the stone (claiming that the stone was still hot). Because of site’s vicinity to Iraq’s border (~4 km), police investigated the site and the rock was broken into several pieces (two main pieces). As the area close to the border is covered by land mines, searching for more fragments was not possible. Several search attempts in the farms around the house and the villages failed to find additional fragments. A ~30 g fragment, along with several small fragments (~14 g together) were sent to Hamed Pourkhorsandi for study. Physical characteristics: Originally a single stone was covered with fusion crust. A layer of soil was visible on the surface, resulting from its impact with the ground. Light-gray interior hosts chondrules. Metal and sulfide grains are visible by naked eye. Petrography: Chondrite with recrystallized texture. Plagioclase average size is 40 µm. Opaque minerals are Fe,Ni metal and troilite. Geochemistry: Olivine Fa19.1±0.3 (n=5), orthopyroxene Fs17.0±0.1Wo1.3±0.1 (n=4), plagioclase An12.2Ab83.4Or4.4 (n=1). Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5) based on petrography, magnetic susceptibility and mineral chemistry. Specimens: A piece of ~1050 g is with the finders, ~650 g is with the police, and ~260 g is in Hojat Kamali’s private collection. Type specimen (30 g) and a polished section at CEREGE. 14 g at RBINS. -- --- Galactic Stone & Ironworks : www.galactic-stone.com Instagram : www.instagram.com/galacticstone Twitter : www.twitter.com/galacticstone --- __ Visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meteoritecentral and the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Met Bull Update : Oued Sfayat fall is official (May 16, 2019 - H5/Algeria), Irons, Lunar, HED, and OC's
Hi Listees, There are several new approvals today, including a new fall from Algeria and Oued Sfayat link - https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=70533 All new approvals - https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?sea=%2A=names=contains=50=ge==All=name=All=All2=Normal%20table==0 List of all witnessed falls since the year 2000 - http://galactic-stone.com/pages/falls Write-up : Oued Sfayat 26°42.433’N, 6°9.766’W Tindouf, Algeria Confirmed fall: 16 May 2019 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5) History: On May 16, 2019, a meteor was seen by a group of shepherds at 9:00 pm (local time) at the Dakhla camp in Tindouf, Algeria. The meteor came in at a low angle (about 30 °) from the west and was moving east at a relatively low velocity. A shockwave was felt as the meteor exploded, and a booming sound was heard near the camp. Hibballah, one of the shepherds present at the camp, went in search alone the following morning (May 17, 2019) for pieces of potential meteorites that may have fallen, by following the direction of the observed meteor trail and booming sound. That same day, Hibbballah recovered the first fragment, an 80 g freshly crusted individual in the area of Oued Sfayat, a river valley about 70 km to the east of the Dakhla camp. After finding this piece, Hibballah returned to the camp to tell his father Oueld Ennajm the location where he had found the first piece. Several days later, Oueld Ennajm and a some shepherds traveled to Oued Sfayat and over the next few of months went searching for more fragments. After searching between the end of May through the middle July in a 1-2 km area at Oued Sfayat, about 6 kg of freshly crusted individual fragments (mostly small stones of varying sizes between 10-60 g, with the exception of a few larger-sized individuals ~600 g) were recovered by Oueld Ennajm and the shepherds. Some of these recovered fragments were then later sold to Ahmed Chacha and Otman Sidi Ahmed. Later on, some of the purchased fragments (2.6 kg) were subsequently purchased by Youssef Bennani, who later sent some small stones in for analysis. Physical characteristics: Stones are covered by a black, fresh fusion crust. A cut of the interior reveals a light-gray surface. Petrography: (Daniel Sheikh, FSU) Chondrules nearly absent(400 μm, N=1). Recrystallized matrix with plagioclase (10 µm). FeNi metal and troilite present. Geochemistry: Olivine, Fa 18.1±0.3 (N=35); orthopyroxene, Fs16.8±0.5Wo1.1±0.1 (N=11). Classification: Ordinary Chondrite (H5) Specimens: 23.4 grams at UCLA; main mass with shepherds at Dakhla camp. -- --- Galactic Stone & Ironworks : www.galactic-stone.com Instagram : www.instagram.com/galacticstone Twitter : www.twitter.com/galacticstone --- __ Visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meteoritecentral and the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Will Breja ever be classified?
Re : the so-called "Breja" fall of May 01, 2010 in Morocco. I recall that a good bit of material from this fall appeared on the market for a period of time after the fall, then it got forgotten as newer and more interesting material surfaced later. It was a fresh OC with a battleship-grey matrix with sparse metal fleck and shock veining. Specimens had velvetly black crust. A couple of years after the fall, I inquired about it to a few dealers and somebody told me that a scientist at a leading institution said that Breja would not be classified because it originated from Algeria and there were legal/ethical issues surrounding it. I don't recall who exactly said this and I think it was in a private email discussion. Well, several more years have gone by, and I still wonder about this old fall when I update my "Recent Falls" meteorite page. And it occurs to me that there have been many new finds approved in the Met Bull that come out of Algeria - it doesn't seem to be an issue recently. In fact, the latest Met Bull update contains three different meteorites out of Algeria. So, is Breja not being classified because nobody is trying (nobody has submitted a sample) or is it because no reputable institution will touch it? And if the latter, then why not? [meteorite-list] Ad: New Aqua Zarcas Costa Rica Meteorite Fall, Rare CM Type, Hammer Fall
Hi Friends and Collectors! On April 23, 2019, a bright fireball exploded over the rainforest in Costa Rica. Local residents were confused and amazed at the sight of black stones falling from the sky, crashing through roofs and peppering their gardens and fields. One stone penetrated the roof of a home and destroyed a writing desk. Word quickly spread that the meteorite was an unusual type and possibly quite valuable. A frantic search ensued as the locals combed their fields and the nearby forests. Professional meteorite hunters from around the world descended on the area and confirmed that the meteorite is a carbonaceous chondrite. Samples were sent off for analysis and preliminary results are CM2-anomalous - this is the same type as Murchison, but anomalous in some way that has not been officially revealed yet. Official classification is pending and should be completed very soon. This meteorite is the most recent fall of a CM2 type and scientists are very excited to study it. Expect new research on this meteorite to be coming out for years to come. For collectors, this meteorite is a trifecta : it is a witnessed fall, it is a rare type, and it is a hammer fall. This is only the second witnessed fall in Costa Rica and the first since 1857! Note - within a day of this fall, torrential rains fell on the strewnfield and damaged any stones still laying the field. The pre-rain material is the most desirable and scientifically-valuable. The fragments I am offering here were found before the rains and were purchased directly from a client of mine who visited Costa Rica and bought stones directly from the finders. Re: [meteorite-list] 15? New Falls in the year 2018 - an apparent bombardment
Hi Al, Marcin, John, and List, Thank you Marcin for reminding me about the Libya fall. That inflates 2018's total to 16. Increased awareness of meteorites, more widespread camera usage, more sophisticated sky-camera technology, and better collection/analysis of data seems to have improved the overall recovery rate in the last handful of years. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the long term. [meteorite-list] 15? New Falls in the year 2018 - an apparent bombardment
Curious Fact : With today's new approvals, there are 11 approved falls in the year 2018. That is the most approved falls in a year since I started tracking them. There are also 4 unapproved falls, bringing the putative total to 15 falls in 2018. While there has been a noticeable upstick in recent years of reported falls, this apparent bombardment is the highest total amongst the years I have been tracking between 2000 and 2019. [meteorite-list] Benenitra meteorite fall is now official
The Benenitra meteorite fall is now official. 23°26.786’S, 45°4.692’E Toliara, Madagascar Confirmed fall: 27 July 2018 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6) History: Reports of a meteor that detonated in a loud explosion, and stones falling from the sky into the town of Benenitra (pop. ~30,000) on the evening of July 27, 2018, were received by a visiting geologist, Timothy Marais, on July 30, 2018. He was shown photographs and several small fragments, two of which he purchased, weighing 99 and 14 g. Roger Gibson and Lewis Ashwal in the School of Geosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand confirmed a meteorite origin for these specimens using petrographic analysis and EMPA. Confirmation of the date and time of the fall was obtained independently when an upper atmosphere infrasound event was identified on a bearing south-southwest of the CTBTO station IS33 near Antananarivo, Madagascar, at 17h16 GMT on July 27 by Dr. Andry Ramanantsoa (Laboratory of Seismology and Infrasound, University of Antananrivo). A weak ground tremor at approximately 17h17 GMT was identified in the data from the seismograph at the Sakaraha (SKRH) station approximately 80 km northwest of Benenitra by Dr Ranto Raveloson (Wits), and was interpreted to be related to the airburst. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were performed by Prof. Susan Webb (Wits). Physical characteristics: Two broken fragments containing small remnants of bluish-black to brown-black fusion crust and weighing 14 g and 82 g (after thin sectioning) consist of a light-gray matrix with disseminated metal (<1 mm) and some visible chondrules (<5 mm). The edge of the larger fragment, which contains a thin (<0.5 mm), dark-gray melt vein, was sectioned. Photographs taken by local residents show more than a dozen other fragments ranging in mass from ~100-1000 g; these show mostly intact fusion crusts with only limited chipping of edges. Samples range from subangular to subrounded to disc-shaped, with both sharp and rounded edges. Fusion crusts on these samples are generally smooth, with a few shallow regmaglypts. Petrography: (L.D. Ashwal and R.L. Gibson, Wits) Modal abundances: 50% olivine, 25% low-Ca pyroxene, 5% high-Ca pyroxene, 10% feldspar, 7% troilite, 2% kamacite, 1% taenite, and trace amounts of chromite and a silica-rich phase. Recognizable chondrules range in size between 1 and 4.5 mm in diameter, and include porphyritic olivine and/or pyroxene, barred olivine, radial pyroxene and cryptocrystalline types, although their original textures have been variably modified by secondary thermal effects. Feldspar is almost entirely crystalline, and occurs as irregular grains up to 100 μm across, many of which display twinning. Pyroxenes are untwinned, and most grains exhibit straight extinction, although minor undulatory extinction is present in some grains. Low-Ca pyroxene shows parallel extinction with respect to cleavage traces. High-Ca pyroxene occurs as irregular grains up to 20 μm across; exsolution lamellae were observed in a few grains. Shock features include planar and irregular fractures in olivine, undulatory extinction in feldspar and pyroxenes, and anastomosing opaque shock veins up to 75 μm thick. Geochemistry: Mineral compositions: (L.D. Ashwal and A. Ziegler) Olivine (Fa24.0±0.8), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs20.4±0.9Wo1.4±0.4), high-Ca pyroxene (Fs8.0± 0.8Wo42.4±1.0), feldspar (Ab79.1±3.1An13.3±1.9Or7.6±1.5), troilite (Fe = 63.3±0.2, S = 36.5±0.3), kamacite (Ni = 5.7±0.7; Co = 0.85±0.05), taenite (Ni = 27.8±1.0). Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6), Shock level S3, Weathering level W0. Specimens: 82 g (R.L. Gibson, Wits), 25.8 g at TCU (donated by Rob Wesel), reports of one or more pieces with masses of up to 15 kg are unconfirmed. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite reclassification questions
Hi Michael, I am sure someone with more expertise will chime in, but I can think of two different things that lead to a meteorite being "reclassified". By "reclassified", I assume you mean being published in the Met Bulletin. This can happen when there is a change in nomenclature or an error was found in the original classification write-up. At one point, all CK meteorites were considered to be part of the CV clan. This later changed and subsequently many entries in the Met Bull needed to updated to reflect this fact. Another example that comes to mind is the infamous Al-Haggounia 001 case. It is officially classified as an aubrite, yet is has been shown to be an EL3 chondrite. Despite this, the erroneous entry in the Met Bull remains unchanged - again, maybe someone who has direct experience with maintaining the Met Bull can chime in on this stuff. The answer to your third question is likely the Nomenclature Committee. Well, it was finally classified as "Edmore" and it is indeed a legit iron meteorite. There were also several approvals today in the bulletin, including a Labenne find from Chile (a pallasite) and some of Graham Ensor's OC's. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite or meteowrong
Hi Michael and List, Those iron-ish specimens remind me of caliche-covered Diablos or Odessas. Some of those look legit, but would likely require testing to confirm (especially if the paperwork or notes from the original owner is no longer extant). Apparently somebody else thinks they might be meteorites, because the lots are attracting multiple bids. The seller has a lot of interesting "junk store" type of items up for sale (including an entire thrift store in Sarasota Florida). Maybe a list member close to that area could go take a look in person. Re: [meteorite-list] NEW Meteorite Fall In Phoenix/Glendale Arizona
It's been a busy summer so far. We have had five falls since June 01, 2018 : Jun 01, 2018 - "Jinghong" (unofficial) (L5 chondrite?) : China (Hammer) Jun 02, 2018 - "Central Kalahari" (unofficial) (unknown type) : Botswana Jun 21, 2018 - Ozerki (L6 chondrite) : Russia Jul 27, 2018 - "Glendale" (unofficial) (ordinary chondrite) : Arizona USA Aug 12-17?, 2018 - "Bhakkar" (unofficial) (ordinary chondrite?) : Pakistan There were three more before these, for a total of eight. Only two (Hamburg and Ozerki) have been classified, approved, and published. Good luck to the hunters! [meteorite-list] The San Pedro de Urabá meteorite fall is approved (Feb 16, 2017, Colombia)
The San Pedro de Urabá meteorite fall from February 2017 has been approved and published in the Met Bulletin : San Pedro de Urabá 8°16’44.39"N, 76°22’41.67"W Antioquia, Colombia Confirmed fall: 16 Feb 2017 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6) History: At 5:30 pm local time on 16 February 2017, a large fireball with sonic booms was observed in northern Colombia. A meteorite subsequently impacted near Mr. Orlando Cuevas on the edge of a soccer field in San Pedro de Urabá, Turbo district, Antioquia State, Colombia. The event was widely reported in the local media. Two other stones are known to have fallen, one much larger than the one that was collected in the soccer field, but their whereabouts are unknown. Michael Farmer acquired the 3768 g stone from Mr. Cuevas. Physical characteristics: Single regmaglypted stone covered with matte black fusion crust. Interior is a light greenish-gray and friable. Cut surface shows poorly defined chondrules and even distribution of small metal/troilite grains. Only a single thin shock vein is visible. Petrography: SEM observation of a polished mount shows scattered poorly defined chondrules (BO, RP, and PO) largely integrated with the matrix. All silicates heavily fractured. Feldspar grains typically >50 μm, with many around 100 to 200 μm. Troilite anhedral and dominantly single crystal to 400 μm. Rare anhedral Ca-Na-Mg phosphates to 60 μm. Chromite to 600 μm is anhedral to subhedral and heavily fractured. Three Fe-Ni metal types present: kamacite, dominantly single crystal (to 0.5 mm) with a frosty etch and weakly defined Neumann bands; tetrataenite, rare, commonly contiguous to kamacite; and, equant Ni-zoned grains with Ni-rich rims and dark-etched cores, some showing kamacite spindles. Native Cu is rare and occurs as <10 micron grains at kamacite/troilite boundary. Scattered and rare melt pockets to 60 μm. Geochemistry: Olivine Fa25.1±0.3, FeO/MnO=47.6±1.8, n=9; low Ca pyroxene Fs21.4±1.2Wo1.5±0.2, FeO/MnO=28.4±1.3, n=10; Feldspars Or13.4±0.3Ab67.3±67.3±0.5, n=3 and Or5.4±0.1Ab84.4±0.02, n=2. Great list Mendy. You hit most of them. I would only add a small handful. NWA 482 - probably one the most interesting lunars for a variety of reasons. NWA 998 - very interesting Martian that holds it's value well. Bonita Springs or Winona - for the Indian connection. Glorieta Mountain - arguably one of the most beautiful US pallasites. Chelyabinsk - this one needs no introduction. Calcalong Creek - the lunar that started it all - if you can find a Bessey Speck of it. Carancas - the crater maker. [meteorite-list] Ad : Astrophotography Telescope Swap for Meteorites?
Hi Asteroid Hunters and Collectors, I am sending out some trade feelers. I have a NOS (new old stock), TMB 80SS-CF (carbon fiber) telescope available for meteorites - if the price is right. Details of the scope are listed below. Contact me off-list (meteoritem...@gmail.com) if interested. I am interested in small pallasite slices, whole fresh aesthetic unclassified stones, etched iron slices, planetaries (no self-paired or unclassified), fresh stones from witnessed falls, Libyan Desert Glass, or most things rare or unusual. Contact me off-list via email to inquire - meteoritem...@gmail.com I can shoot some photos of it tomorrow. I can meet the buyer locally or can ship to anywhere in the world - although I prefer to ship inside the US/Canada due to the size and bulk of this package. TMB Optics APO refractor. (Thomas M. Back, lens designer). 80mm air-spaced triplet apochromatic lens. Extremely well figured using LZOS-sourced glass elements. Carbon fiber tube with extendable dewshield. Objective diameter : 80mm. Design : TMB APO triplet, air-spaced. Glass type : Ohara FPL-53 (center element). Focal length : 504mm. Focal ratio : F/6.3 Focus : Starlight Feathertouch 2", dual speed crayford. Diagonal : Astrotech 2" dielectric. Date of Manufacture : circa 2007 or 2008. Included Eyepieces : TMB Planetary 3.2mm (1.25"), Astrotech 20mm (Series 6) Widefield (1.25") Includes padded hard storage case and mounting rings. The scope was a floor demo model for a telescope show and was never used beyond setting it up. The accessories (eyepieces and diagonal) are brand new and still in the original packaging. Lens designer Thomas Back passed away years ago and these scopes are no longer in production. The TMB air-spaced triplets are highly regarded by both visual astronomers and astrophotographers. The field is flat with a crisp and contrasty view with stark whites and inky blacks. There is no detectable false color, even on the brightest targets. This scope is built very solid and the focuser can handle large camera rigs. Owners of these scopes rarely part with them, so they are collectible and not often seen on the market. Here is a review of the standard model - the standard has the same optics and lens cell (80SS). You can expect the same optical performance as the scope in this review - the optics are the same (this carbon fiber model also has the upgraded Feathertouch focuser) TMB 80SS review - https://www.cloudynights.com/.../cn-report-the-tmb-80ss... Announcement of the 80SS-CF model - https://www.cloudynights.com/.../118624-tmb-80-ss-carbon.../ This model I am selling is the 80SS-CF (carbon fiber) and has the upgraded Starlight Feathertouch focuser. Brand new, this scope sold for $1395 for just the tube and case. The diagonal sold for $120 and the eyepieces for approx. $50 each. That is a total package value of $1615. [meteorite-list] New Mazichuan China Diogenite fall approved (September 16, 2016)
The Mazichuan diogenite fall in China (09-16-16) has been approved in the Meteoritical Bulletin database. Link - https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=66831 All 21st century meteorite falls - http://galactic-stone.com/pages/falls -- Mazichuan 36.693°N, 108.30°E Shaanxi, China Confirmed fall: 2016 Sept 16 Classification: HED achondrite (Diogenite) History: On 16 September 2016, at about 15:00 local time, many residents from several villages heard an airplane-like noise followed by three loud sonic booms. A woman in Mazichuan witnessed dusty smoke rising from a hillside 100 m away from her home. She went to the hillside and picked up a black stone in a hole. She then knocked off a corner of the stone and found greenish crystals inside. The stone was abandoned outside her yard and later picked up by her neighbor. Photos of the stone with black fusion crust and greenish crystals appeared on an amateur meteorite website in November 2016. A Chinese meteorite collector (Wang Ziyao) contacted the holders. He went to the fall site three times (April, June, and September 2017) and did a thorough investigation. Mr. Wang confirmed the fall account. A total of three stones (1302, 1100, and 880 g) were recovered by residents. The largest was bought from a local villager by a meteorite hobbyist (Liu Yukun) on December 1, 2017. Physical characteristics: The hand specimen is covered with a fresh black fusion crust. Numerous mm-sized greenish crystals can be seen on the exposed section. Petrography: A monomict breccia mainly consisting of coarse-grained orthopyroxene (a few mm) set in a fine-grained matrix of orthopyroxene. Accessory minerals are chromite, sulfide, FeNi metal and silica. Anorthite was not found. Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene grains have very homogeneous compositions regardless their grain size. Orthopyroxene (Fs20.9-22.5Wo1.3-2.2), Fe/Mn (cation ratio) range from 25.2 to 33.6 with an average of 29.8±2.1 (n=32). Specimens: 36 g at PMO, a 1.3 kg mass with Mr. Liu Yukun, and two other masses are in the possession of local finders. -- --- Galactic Stone & Ironworks : www.galactic-stone.com Instagram : www.instagram.com/galacticstone Twitter : www.twitter.com/galacticstone --- __ Visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meteoritecentral and the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Mukundpura 26º52’52.5’’N, 75º39’53.7’’E Rajasthan, India Fall: June 6, 2017 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2) History: A meteorite weighing approximately 2 kg fell in Mukundpura village at 05:15 hrs on June 6, 2017, on sandy soil in the agricultural field of Mr. Banshi Ram. The impact formed a nearly circular crater of ~40 cm diameter with a depth of 15 cm. Upon impact, the stone shattered into several large pieces and multiple gram and subgram-sized fragments. Mr. Banshi Ram observed a bright red-yellow colored burning fragment fall with a thundering sound about 100 m away from his house. They informed the nearby Bhankrota police station, where the large pieces were deposited. The fall of meteorite in the Mukundpura Village was reported in the media. Dr. Anil D. Shukla and Dr. D. Ray visited the fall site two days after the fall and acquired some fragments from the local villagers, with the help of police. Physical characteristics: The meteorite is covered in well-developed matte fusion crust with a few broad regmaglypts. The interior of the stone is dark black with an abundance of small white spots. There are various clasts (angular tohttp://galactic-stone.com/pages/falls rounded and up to 4 cm across) embedded in the dark colored matrix. Petrography: The modal abundances avearged from three thick sections include chondrule (~15%), matrix (~70%), refractory inclusions (~2%), carbonates (~7%), Fe-Ni metal (~2%), and sulfides (~4%). Matrix is dominated by serpentine with lesser tochilinite. Geochemistry: The Fa content of granular porphyritic olivine chondrule is uniform and highly forsteritic (Fa<1, SD=0.13, n=16). The Fa content of barred olivine chondrule is ferroan and composition ranges Fa32-33(SD=0.06, n=11). The Cr2O3 of granular and barred olivine is almost indistinguishable and ranges 0.36 to 0.61 wt%. The Fe/Mn ratios of type IIA chondrule follow the similar trend to the CO chondrites. The bulk chemical composition of Mukundpura chondrite was analysed using XRF and Q-ICPMS. The major oxides of Mukundpura show a very good match with Murchison and Paris CM carbonaceous chondrite. Following XRF data in wt%: SiO2 29.5, TiO2 0.13, Al2O3 1.3, Fe2O3 32.4, MnO 0.22, MgO 17.4, CaO 1.7, Na2O 0.59, K2O 0.05, and P2O5 0.21. Classification: CM2 chondrite fall. Specimens: Type specimen 30.5 g at PRL. Main mass ~2000 gm with GSI (Based on the report on GSI web portal). [meteorite-list] AD : Two Kilogram Bulk Lot of Premium Unclassified Meteorites
Hi Friends and Collectors, I am offering a great deal on a two-kilo lot of unclassified Saharan meteorites. There are many uncut individuals in this lot. Many have fusion crust, chondrules, oriented shapes, or other desirable features. This lot would be ideal for cutting or resale. Use coupon code "metlist" at checkout for 20% OFF the price! Link - http://galactic-stone.com/cigar-box-meteorite-collection-over-two-kilos-of-space-rocks/ Description below : This is a premium cigar box filled with over two kilograms (approx. 2018 grams or nearly 4.5 pounds) of unclassified stony meteorites. Previously, I have offered kilo-sized lots of meteorites in a cigar box, but this is the largest and nicest lot I have offered to date. The box is almost double the size of previous boxes, and it holds double the typical amount of meteorites. For cigar connoisseurs, this box of 32 cigars costs over $800 when purchased new. Although the cigars are not included. you get all the paper work and inserts from Arturo Fuente - the color presentation card, the humidor packet, and the black ribbon. This is by far, the classiest box of meteorites you will find. The meteorites were recovered from the Saharan Desert in the early 1990's and have resided in a single collection since their sale now. I acquired these directly from the owner who bought them on an expedition to Morocco in the days just prior to the gold rush of so-called "NWA" meteorites. These stones were hand-picked from a larger lot of five kilograms. Many of these stones have desert varnish and some have fusion crust. All of them are uncut and have only been lightly cleaned with a soft brush to remove sand and dust. The storage box is a wooden cigar box from the Arturo Fuente Opus X Reserva De Chateau brand of cigars. This is a premium brand of cigars and a full box of these cigars costs $800. In this case, you get the heavy box that is made of wood and has brass hardware. This is not a cheapie box of thin or fake wood. It still has the original color lid insert. Judging by appearances and magnetic attraction, the majority of these meteorites are L and H chondrites. Some show chondrules on the surface and many of these might be worth cutting open or slicing. There is a total of 2018 grams of stones (a little over 1 kilogram). Some of these are small and would be great for gifting. Others are larger and would make nice hand specimens. Others have features that might make them good for cutting or slicing. Many new specimens available - http://galactic-stone.com/brand-new/ Thanks for looking and have a great weekend! Specimens: Type specimen 22.8 g and polished section at FMNH; 102.6 g specimen with Robert Ward; 44.5 g specimen The first meteorite fall of 2018 is now official - Hamburg Michigan. I have updated the Catalog of Witnessed Falls page to reflect this new data : http://galactic-stone.com/pages/falls Hamburg 42°26.82’N, 83°50.5’W Michigan, United States Confirmed fall: 2018 Jan 16 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H4) History: On 16 January 2018 around 20:10 EST, a fireball was observed and reported by hundreds of people from seven states. The fireball was recorded by multiple security cameras and registered as a 2.0 magnitude earthquake. Mike Hankey (AMS) calculated the trajectory within one hour. A strewnfield map was produced by Marc Fries (JSC) using weather radar data from radar reflections of falling meteorites. The first fragment was found on 18 January 2018 at 7:50 EST by Robert Ward on Strawberry Lake near Hamburg, Michigan. The same day Ward found two more fragments (102.6 and 44.5 g) on Bass Lake near Hamburg, and sixteen more pieces were subsequently reported within two weeks of the fall. Physical characteristics: Most stones are fully covered by fusion crust. Petrography: Metal-rich texture typical of H chondrites is apparent on cut surfaces. The metal volume estimate is 9% based on an Fe EDS map. Chondrules are visible in polished section. The average chondrule diameter is 0.4±0.2 mm (N=26). Several chondrules are well-defined and have sharp boundaries. Pyroxenes are mostly orthopyroxene and less abundant clinopyroxene as determined with Raman spectroscopy. Feldspar grains vary in size and measure 3.4±2.2 μm (n=64) in a representative field of view. Chromites are impact fractured. No chromite veinlets nor opaque veins are observed within the meteorite. Phosphates account for about 0.5% of the meteorite and occur mainly as merrillite (0.4%) and apatite (0.1%). In a representative field of view, grain sizes for merrillite average around 100 µm and range from <1 µm up to 430 µm (n=37); apatite ranges from 70 µm to 310 µm with an average of 150 µm (n=8). The meteorite appears very weakly shocked. Melt veins (Fe-sulfide) occur only in close proximity to the fusion crust. Geochemistry: Mineral Compositions and geochemistry: Olivine Fa18.7±0.7 (N=34). The average composition of Ca-poor px is Fs16.3±0.4Wo1.3±0.1 (n=80). Feldspar is present with an average composition of An14.0±4.0Ab81.1±3.0 Or4.8±1.3 (n=13). [meteorite-list] Ad: Big 1.3kg Unclassified Stone, Primo Cigar Box 2kg Lot, Various Unclassified Meteorites for display, outreach, or resale.
Hi Friends and Collectors, I have an interesting offering this week. As someone who appreciates fine meteorites and fine cigars, I decided to part with one of the nicest cigar boxes in my collection. This large wooden box once held $800 worth of Arturo Fuente Opus X Chateau Fuente Reserve (1992) cigars. It still has the original ribbon, humidor pack, and inserts. Instead of cigars, this box now holds 2018 grams (2kg) of unclassified Saharan meteorites. These stones were picked from a larger lot and were selected for quality and aesthetics. Some have nice patinas of wind polished desert varnish. Some have fusion crust. All of them are uncut. They originate from an old collection and were recovered from Morocco in the mid to late 1990's (prior to the NWA rush). I also have several large unclassified stones that would be ideal for display, outreach, or cutting/resale. Have a look. :) Use coupon code "metlist" at checkout for 20% OFF your entire order. [meteorite-list] Ad: Nice Unclassified Meteorites of all Sizes, Small to Large, Whole Uncut Specimens
Hi Friends and Collectors, It's been a busy last week or so in the meteorite world. There was a new fall in Michigan (no, I do not have any yet!) and the big Tucson Show is now in full swing. I did not go to Tucson, but I have been busy with a ton of new meteorites to keep me occupied. A few of you ordered last week and a couple of those went out late, but they are now shipped and on their way. If you have not received your parcel yet and would like the tracking number, contact me off-list. I apologize for the delay - it's been nuts around here. I have several kilos of nice unclassified Saharan meteorites. There are two kilo-sized lots that each come in a wooden cigar box. And there are over a dozen of quality meteorites ranging from hand specimens to larger display pieces. Use coupon code "metlist" at checkout for 20% OFF all prices. :) Note - the two cigar box lots are about the same weight and have identical boxes. But, one of them has higher quality stones in it, so that is why one box lot costs more than the other.
