Peabody spokeswoman Melanie Brigockas said it was determined to be one of the most common types of meteorites, ordinary chondrite. The meteorite has a thin, black crust from burning as it entered the Earth's atmosphere, and a light grey interior, according to a Peabody release. Larry Beck called the Police Department Saturday morning to report that a rock crashed through his roof Friday night. Although it had not been confirmed as such, “all indications say that it is probably a meteorite,” said Police Chief Edward Stephens earlier Tuesday. S. Geological Survey) in scientific conferences, including the planned 8th International Mars Conference set for July 15-19 on the Caltech campus. The current fiscal environment is sufficiently restrictive that we, the organizers of the conference, have decided to delay the meeting for one year, holding it instead in June/July of 2014. We sought advice from the MEPAG Executive Committee, which unanimously concurred with our decision. We were preparing for a general mailing last Monday when NASA Headquarters asked us to hold off and consider whether the conference could be hosted electronically. This was a reasonable request, given recent success for several meetings held via electronic media. However, after consideration, we felt that this would not work for the 8th International Conference on Mars. This series of Mars conferences have at opportune times provided comprehensive looks at our state of knowledge regarding Mars. They are, by design (e.g., broad participation, no parallel sessions, and yes a captive audience in an academic setting) meant to foster cross-disciplinary discussion, integration and innovation. Although it was our strong preference to hold the conference this year, the meeting in 2014 will include even more results from Mars, including Curiosity’s further exploration of Gale Crater, as the rover will then be well into the second year of its primary science mission. We have no doubt that Mars will remain in the news in the coming year, given the ongoing orbital and surface exploration of the planet, and there could be several focused workshops or conferences in that time; each needs to decide if an electronic forum is appropriate. In the meantime, we will work with NASA over the coming year to obtain its approval for extensive participation by its researchers, which is vital to the overall success of a conference that is of the scale of its predecessors. We look forward to a full conference in June/July 2014 and hope to see you there. It's always hard to tell from photos, but if it looked this way in person, I would not have guessed Holbook. If someone cleans/shines them up, it can really change the look of them. I've found a lot Holbrook and seen a lot taken in the field, and I thought I knew them well. But I was surprised a few years ago at the difference, when I saw one cleaned with chapstick just hours after being found in front of many witnesses. I had to adjust my thinking (I've always left mine as found, dirt and all, and I'm glad I have). But even so, that doesn't really change the thickness of the crust. It just looks strange - it could be a Holbrook that's been handled a lot, like being carried in a pocket (???). Unless you really trust this person, I'd stay away, but that's just me (the seller could be on the up and up). Mark P.S nice finds Jim! The rosy glow of dawn was creeping up over the red rock cliffs to the east and I spotted Jupiter a few degrees above the horizon, with the Pleiades just above that. Not a bad way to start the day. But then, just as my wife came out to look... I turned to the north just in time to catch a brilliant fireball. It was traveling roughly SW to NE, making a line from about Vega or northern Hercules to the handle of the Big Dipper. It spanned about 20 degrees of sky and was very bright white - several times brighter than Venus - leaving a brief ion trail behind before turning orange and beginning to fragment. It either burned up completely at that point, or broke apart as it continued in dark flight. If anything reached the ground, I'd estimate it to be in the San Rafael Swell area. While oohing and ahhing over all that, I turned back to the east just a moment later just as Venus began to rise over the cliffs of Capitol Reef. It was orange, like a rising full moon, and grew larger as it continued coming into view. I watched it detach from the cliff and begin to rise, first in arc-minutes and then degrees, brightening all the while. He didn't even have my correct address on the package according to the info he gave me. I gave him my CORRECT address and have heard NOTHING from him since. I have posted numerous nasty responses to him on FB but he has not responded to that either. Mirko Graul also mentioned to me that Joe has scammed him too at the same time. He also tried to sell Gary Fujihara the same stone I was buying I think, according to what Gary said. I tried to be nice to him and paid him with Paypal 'gift so he wouldn't have any charges but realize to my stupidity I have NO RECOURSE to have get my money back. I guess I just chalk this one up to lesson learned, and know who I am dealing with in the future. That $60 is gone At this point I don't know that there is anything I can do but kick his ass if I ever see him. Webb Sent: Sunday, May 20, 2012 2:47 AM To: Stuart McDaniel ; James Beauchamp ; pshu...@messengersfromthecosmos.com Cc: The List Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Quickie Pete, James, Stuart, List Long answer to a quick question. 1. The Moon DOES rotate on its axis. If it didn't, we on the Earth would have a slow month-long changing view of every spot on the Moon. There would be no near side and far side. If you were looking at what we call the near side tonight, in two weeks you would be looking at the far side. The sidereal (with reference to the stars, rotation period of the Moon is 27.321582 days. The orbital period of the Moon is 27.321582 days. In a word, the orbit is synchronous. That's relative to the stellar background. The synodic (relative to the Sun) orbital period of the Moon is different, 29.530589 days. In case that puzzles you, the cause of the difference is explained here: http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/questions/question32.html 2. James, the strength of the tides is determined by the Moon's MASS, hence its gravitational influence. Given the same orbit, the tides would be the same whatever the period of rotation, 27 days or 27 hours. Now, you may be referring to the fact that the Moon's center of gravity is displaced toward the Earth slightly, and if it rotated rapidly (or didn't rotate at all), it would slightly alter the gravitational pull and the tidal effect from it, but effect would be incredibly small. The center if gravity is only offset about two kilometers! 3. It has been hypothesized that without our large and prominent satellite, humans would have been a much longer time figuring orbital mechanics. Remember it was idly trying to figure out how fast the Moon was falling around the Earth that gave Newton his first push into the theory of gravity while he was back home to avoid the plague while a young student. The Moon's orbit is incredibly complex, full of tilts and wobbles of every kind. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbit_of_the_Moon The full calculation of the equation of the Moon's orbit (where it will be at a specific time) is one of the most computationally intensive tasks ever done. Men have devoted their entire working life to it and still not finished the job. The last to do it was E. W. Brown: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_William_Brown 4. But even IF the Moon had a new, non-synchronous rotation, tidal braking would slowly return it to its old synchronous rotational period. OR, if it had no rotation at all, tidal acceleration would spin it up again to the synchronous period. The full mathematical theory of tidal fiiction and the evolution of the lunar orbit was worked out by the XIXth century physicist George Howard Darwin (Charles Darwin's son). Brief explanation here: http://curious.astro.cornell.edu/question.php?number=124 5. The strength of tidal forces on the Earth's rotation and the Moon's recession (moving away from the Earth) is more dependent on the shape of the continents, the width of the continental shelves, and the depth of the oceans than any other factor. An Earth with many low-lying continents, broad ocean shelves, and shallow oceans would have been slowed to a day much longer than 24 hours by now. And the Moon would have ended up much further away than it is. In the past, the day was shorter and the number days in a year much greater than it is now. I appears that at formation, 4.5 billion yars ago, the year was about 800 days of nearly 12 hours each: ftp://ftp.ecgs.lu/public/publications/jlg/jlg90/JLG90_Denis.pdf 6. Tides are far from simple. In Tahiti, for example, the actual experienced tides are almost entirely a product of the Sun's gravity. You get a good approximation by ignoring the Moon altogether. There's a high tide at noon and midnight and lows at 6 am and pm. Why? http://tahitiexpeditions.typepad.com/travelblog/2010/07/tides-in-tahiti.html 7. We now have a short list of people on this List with nothing better to do on a Saturday night... I suppose especially me who wrote the longest. Sterling K. Many people are here, some new faces, most well known, all hunting for the fall of a lifetime, a CM2, only California's third fall. I walked many miles today, with nothing to show but sore feet, but i did buy out ~1gram of fragments recovered from the parking lot piece found by Dr. Jeniskens. more pieces were scattered in the lot. Sadly this rarest of rare meteorites fell in one of the toughest terrains I have ever had the displeasure of searching for meteorites in. As of right now less than 15 grams has been found despite large scale search. Of course that could change at any moment with the right find. So far it has been fun, i almost stepped on small rattlesnake today, so be careful, he did not rattle. Police were involved in a couple of hunters day for innocent reasons, seems landowners called cops even when hunters had permission, people are kind of private up here, and park rangers were getting interested in people hunting for rocks. It could get interesting really fast with tomorrow's barrage of news that is coming down the pike. Still, this is one of the rarest falls on my lifetime, and worth working oneself nearly to death to try and find. i hope as much as possible is recovered for the science that can be done. Congrats again to Robert Ward for finding the first smallest needle in the worlds largest haystack, something that 50 people today did not duplicate. The former space rock-turned-flaming-meteor entered Earth's atmosphere around 8 a.m. PDT. Reports of the fireball have come in from as far north as Sacramento, Calif. and as far east as North Las Vegas, Nev. Bill Cooke of the Meteoroid Environments Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., estimates the object was about the size of a minivan, weighed in at around 154,300 pounds (70 metric tons) and at the time of disintegration released energy equivalent to a 5-kiloton explosion. Most meteors you see in the night's sky are the size of tiny stones or even grains of sand and their trail lasts all of a second or two, said Don Yeomans of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Fireballs you can see relatively easily in the daytime and are many times that size - anywhere from a baseball-sized object to something as big as a minivan. Elizabeth Silber of the Meteor Group at the Western University of Canada, Ontario, estimates the location of its explosion in the upper atmosphere above California's Central Valley. Eyewitnesses of this fireball join a relatively exclusive club. An event of this size might happen about once a year, said Yeomans. But, they don't seem fresh enough to be a new fall that is less than two weeks old. Notice the chip in the crust of the larger specimen in the foreground. There appears to be some brownish color from oxidation on the exposed matrix. This could be an older fall, like Buzzard. Or, the exposed matrix oxidized very very quickly - not impossible I guess, given the wet nature of the area. At any rate, anyone considering a purchase of these stones (or any such stones) such remember that even if these specimens are genuine, it is illegal to export them out of Canada without a valid export permit. A posting on Kijiji shows two roundish and blackened rocks a man says he found on the side of a highway north of Rockhaven. One of the rocks is listed for sale for an unspecified price and the other rock is shown suspended by a magnet. Now geologists and astronomers who study meteorites are trying to get in touch with the man in an attempt to verify whether the rocks are connected to Tuesday's meteor sighting, which rattled houses as it zoomed over North Battleford. Richard Huziak, a Saskatoon amateur astronomer and member of the Prairie Fireball Network, says the rocks in the picture look like chondrites, which match meteorites found after the Buzzard Coulee meteor crashed in central Saskatchewan in 2008. Several researchers are trying to get in touch with the man - unsuccessfully, so far - in an effort to bring the rocks to the University of Saskatchewan for examination and testing. Until they're presented, it's hard to know what fall they came from, Huziak said. They may well be meteorites, he said, but ones that fell years ago. U of S geologist Mel Stauffer is also trying to get in touch with the man in an effort to check the rocks' authenticity. The photograph he posted on Kijiji looks to be of a meteorite, Stauffer said in an email. University of Calgary geoscientist Alan Hildebrand, who co-ordinates the Canadian Fireball Reporting Centre, said anyone who has found a meteorite and wants to sell it would be wise to have experts identify it first. Some meteorites are more rare - and therefore far more valuable - than others. We have foolproof ways of telling if it's a recent fall or not, Hildebrand added. When contacted by The StarPhoenix, the man behind the Kijiji ad was not willing to have his name or photograph in the paper. Faye Rowat, one of a handful of residents in the tiny settlement of Rockhaven, said there have been a few people out searching the area since Tuesday's fireball. On Friday morning, she was about to head out with some magnets and her two grandsons, the youngest of which was enthused about the chance of coming across a space rock. It's a free gift from the asteroid belt, Huziak said. We can build spaceships for a hundred million dollars and go out and get pieces. Or they can just fall to the Earth and we can pick them up. Each rock tells you a bit more about the origin of the solar system and they all date back to the age of the formation of the Earth, or even before that. Both Huziak and Hildebrand said several new videos have surfaced in the past couple of days that are allowing them to narrow down the location of the so-called strewn field where pieces fell, which they say is likely south of Rockhaven. The hamlet is about 190 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon. Huziak said several explosions are visible in the video footage, suggesting pieces broke off the meteor higher up and may have survived the fall to Earth. Security camera footage from

This is the 5 TV interview I've given since arriving. http://dfw.cbslocal.com/video/6713580-meteor-hunters-scouring-north-texas/ We spent the day interviewing more witnesses compiling and extending the range of sonic boom farther to the east to include Wills Point, and southern Lake Tawakanii. We'll do some field samplings tomorrow east of 19. Also as a warning. I've heard from a local that the landowner who owns the land in the north where the upper radar blip is, has gotten very hostile to all outsiders. The local warned me to tell everyone to stay off that property. He thinks the landowner may shoot to wound or maim. So I'd like everyone to take that threat to heart. At this point, we have two new important observations and think the strewnfield to be east of 19 now. At this point, there have been no Z sightings, but the Black Panther remains a constant threat. 5 dogs were killed. Also, the park rangers at the state park warned us that a mountain lion has been spotted in the area. Some sonic boom activity has been traced back to some individual using some kind of reactive explosive that detonates when shot by a bullet. Torvald and Donavan have left the zone replaced by Stephen Thompson out of Fredricksburg TX who is an expert on Sonic Boom characteristics. I've been lucky enough to get some media attention to try to motivate the public to assist here is today's interview on TV. The local police has informed us this has been a bit of a problem for weeks. Consequently, it really screws up our acoustical survey. and a mention and big hand to Dirk Ross, David Gonzales, and Marc Fries for giving us back support. -mccartney taylor stephen thompson (meteorite hunter) (offical panther bait) __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Well, Shoshana, you might still get to hold such a rock someday. According to a 2008 analysis http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/0801/0801.4038.pdf by Brett Gladman and Jaime Coffey (University of British Columbia), chunks of Mercury should be lying somewhere on Earth right now. The dynamicists conclude that 2% to 5% of the debris blasted by impacts off the surface of Mercury at or above escape velocity (2.6 miles per second) should reach Earth within 30 million years. Their numbers suggest that Mercurian meteorites should be roughly one third as common as those from Mars, for which the count now stands at 60. Gladman conservatively suggests that at least a half dozen stones should be lying around somewhere on terra firma. Meteorite collectors would value a Mercurian meteorite above all others, likely fetching $5,000 or more per gram, so they've been on the lookout for one. A few years ago, prior to Messenger's arrival, meteoriticists had speculated that the best existing match to Mercury were a rare handful of ancient, basalt-rich stones known as angrites http://research.jsc.nasa.gov/PDF/Ares-1.pdf. But even before Messenger's arrival, ground-based astronomers had concluded that Mercurian surface rocks contained very little iron - strange indeed, given that the innermost planet has an iron core that takes up 80% of its diameter and more than half of its volume! At that time, comments geochemist David Blewett (Applied Physics Laboratory), people were expecting Mercury to have a composition more like a lower-iron version of the lunar highlands. We now know that it's much different than that. After nearly a yearly scrutinizing the planet from orbit, Messenger has confirmed that iron is in short supply at the surface. Instead, the compositional clues suggest that a Mercurian meteorite would be an igneous rock - or perhaps a fused breccia of different rock types - rich in magnesium and volatile elements (especially sulfur and potassium). This closely matches the composition of another rare meteorite group, the aubrites. Also known as enstatite achondrites, aubrites are igneous rocks dominated by the iron-free mineral enstatite (Mg_2 Si_2 O_6 ). But aubrites aren't from the innermost planet. For one thing, they're too reflective - anything coming from Mercury would be much darker, tinted by some yet-to-be-identified compound that's seen widely http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA14492 in Messenger's images. It might also smell faintly of sulfur, appear heavily shocked, exhibit significant exposure to cosmic rays, and might even be slightly magnetic. Such characteristics would certainly have come to the attention of hunters and collectors, and it's safe to say that none of the world's 40,000 well-documented meteorites are from Mercury. Yet dynamical probabilities argue otherwise, so why haven't such samples been found? Gladman and Coffey didn't address how chunks of rock might get blasted off the Mercurian surface, only that the high collision velocities of asteroids and comets should make it easy to do so. Maybe the launch mechanics aren't understood well enough, suggests Jay Melosh, an impact specialist at Purdue University. Perhaps at the very high speeds required for direct transfer, the fragments are simply too small, he says. These ejecta have to be launched from the surface very close to the impact point - and perhaps our current models do not give very good results here. However, Messenger finds that big impacts on Mercury are accompanied by clusters of secondary pits, created by tossed-out debris, that are generally much larger - not smaller - than those around comparable lunar craters. This fact is one of the current big puzzles about the Mercurian cratering record, Melosh concedes. And so the search goes

Re: [meteorite-list] New App Helps NASA Keep Track of Meteoroids
Is there one for the Droid?? Stuart McDaniel Lawndale, NC Secr., Cleve. Co. Astronomical Society IMCA #9052 http://spacerocks.weebly.com -Original Message- From: Ron Baalke Sent: Tuesday, December 13, 2011 7:11 PM To: Meteorite Mailing List Subject: [meteorite-list] New App Helps NASA Keep Track of Meteoroids http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2011/13dec_meteorcounter/ New App Helps NASA Keep Track of Meteoroids NASA Science News December 13, 2011 Surprising but true: Every day, on average, more than 40 tons of meteoroids strike our planet. Most are tiny specks of comet dust that disintegrate harmlessly high up in Earth's atmosphere, producing a slow drizzle of meteors in the night sky. Bigger chunks of asteroid and comet debris yield dozens of nightly fireballs around the globe. Some are large enough to pepper the ground with actual meteorites. With so much stuff zeroing in on our planet, NASA could use some help keeping track of it all. Enter the Meteor Counter -- a new iPhone app designed to harness the power of citizen scientists to keep track of meteoroids. Using our app, people from all walks of life can contribute to authentic NASA research, says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, which sponsored the project. The data will help us discover new meteor showers, pinpoint comet debris streams, and map the distribution of meteoroids around Earth's orbit. Whenever you go outside for a bit of stargazing, take your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch with you, advises Cooke. Start the Meteor Counter, lie down in a safe dark place, and be alert for shooting stars. The Meteor Counter operates using an intuitive piano key interface. Every time you see a meteor, simply tap the key corresponding to its brightness. Keys on the left correspond to dim meteors - barely visible to the naked eye; keys on the right denote jaw-dropping fireballs. With each keytap, the Meteor Counter records critical data such as the time you saw the meteor, the meteor's magnitude, and your location. You can even turn on an optional voice recorder to capture your own description of events. Experts could comment on the trajectory and radiant of the meteor, while novices might prefer to simply shout out--wow! Afterward, these data are automatically uploaded to NASA researchers for analysis. The Meteor Counter is designed for all kinds of observers, ranging from experts with experience in science-grade meteor observations to first-time sky watchers who might never have seen a meteor before. The beauty of our app is that it gradually transforms novices into experts, says Cooke. As an observer gains experience, we weight their data accordingly in our analyses. The Meteor Counter also acts as a meteor shower alert system. When a known shower is in the offing, the app pops up a reminder for observers. A news feed and events calendar is routinely updated by professional scientists to keep users informed of the latest meteor happenings. Cooke encourages citizen scientists everywhere to try it out. The app is available free of charge in Apple's app store, he says. Just search for Meteor Counter, and let the observing begin. How often does a city ending meteorite (think Canyon Diablo) strike the earth? A. ? 5. Q. Has any animal ever found a meteorite? A. Here is how this will work : I will accept nominations from the List for objects that will be hammered by this meteorite. Once a nomination is selected, I will take the object out into my backyard and place it on the ground. I will set up a camera to capture the resulting mayhem on video. I will then climb onto my roof and hurl the meteorite at the object with the intent of doing some serious damage to the target object. Then I will upload the video to YouTube for hammer voyeurs around the world to watch. Some rules about nominating objects : 1) I am a man of very modest means. This means I cannot, and will not, smash any flat screen plasma televisions, iPads, Ferrari windshields, priceless antiques, or other objects which are expensive or difficult to acquire. The objects nominated should be common items that are easily available and inexpensive. 2) Resist the temptation to nominate politicians (of any party affiliation). 3) I will select a winning nominee based on a combination of - creativity and smashability. 4) If someone wants to donate an object for smashing, I will consider and accept donated objects based on the criteria laid out in #3 above. In other words, how much gold is in this meteorite? The TKW of this meteorite is 32kg. So, with 1000g in a kilo, and 1000mg in a gram, how much gold is in this celestial hunk of iron? Or would the process be too complex and expensive? Re: [meteorite-list] Gold and Iridium content of meteorites(especiallyirons)
OK, I was right the first time...guess my math ain't that good either! LOL. Stuart McDaniel Lawndale, NC Secr., Cleve. Co. There are 31 grams per troy ounce; gold is priced in troy ounces; there are 1.537 troy ounces oif gold in that 32 kg, or $2551.94 at today's (10/03/11) price. Cost you more than that to extract it... I noticed that the gold (Au) content was listed at 1.49mg/g. Is this sort of data as straight-forward as it appears, or is there more to it that this layman is missing? In other words, how much gold is in this meteorite? The TKW of this meteorite is 32kg. So, with 1000g in a kilo, and 1000mg in a gram, how much gold is in this celestial hunk of iron? (my math is horrible) Second question, what is highest known gold content in a meteorite and what meteorite is it? Third question, some meteorites also have high iridium content. What is the highest known iridium content in a meteorite? Re: [meteorite-list] Gold and Iridium content of meteorites (especiallyirons)
I believe that would be 47.68 grams. Stuart McDaniel Lawndale, NC Secr., Cleve. Co.
