My main concerns are compatibility issues with wireless (I'll probably
just use G, not N). I'm pretty sure Intel as the graphics is fine and I
think I've heard OpenBSD has SSD support. Everything else should basically

 Thank you!

OpenBSD softraid does have an AoE discipline in the works, but I do not
know the status of it.

Also, AsiaBSDCon 2010 last week had an OpenBSD presentation on iSCSI

 Save yourself some grief:

 1)
get a $5 USB stick from $discount_store
 2) install a OpenBSD on a bootable
partition on the stick
 3) boot the laptop into OpenBSD from the USB stick

4) examine the dmesg output, and save a copy

 If you don't have physical
access to the laptop (eg. buying
online) then you're SOL and can only hope
for the
best. I'm sure others here will point out that the
 SuperCard
2000 might have the same packaging outside, but
 different chipsets inside.

Booting it and looking at a dmesg is the only way to know
 100%.

recent hardware with older OpenBSD versions

2010-03-20 Thread T. Valent
Hi!

We're using OpenBSD 4.3 kernels on a larger number of machines.

(For us there is no reason to update to newer versions of OpenBSD yet.
On the contrary, maintenance is a lot easier for us if we try to keep
all systems on the same versions for as long as possible.)

Yet we have been using Intels DQ35MP motherboard which has been
discontinued a while ago. We're now looking for an alternative. The
DQ35MP has been using Intels Q35 chipset. We didn't find any more boards
with this chipset on the market and tried boards with Q45 chipsets. They
didn't work for us (HD access issues, probably SATA problems, I don't
know the exact reason for sure).

Does anyone have a recommendation for a board that's compatible with
OpenBSD43 and which has onboard VGA, 1GB LAN (preferably not a Realtek!)?

Help will be appreciated very much!

Regards,
T.

That wasn't my question. I didn't ask for support, I thought maybe

No, not really. Whose opinion should you trust who does not keep
computers up to date? Who should go to the extra effort of installing
old software to check? Two releases are supported, which means if you
want to be lazy you only update once per year. If you can't manage that
much then why not?

I didn't expect that anyone of the OpenBSD core-team would have an
answer due to the obvious fact that you must be working with the latest
versions.

But who knows, maybe I'm lucky and there's some user out there who ran
into the same problem and has a hint for me...

It's worth a try! ;-)

Note that updating has gotten much easier since that ancient period, 2 years

maybe, just maybe, you'll figure out that updating is not as difficult as

What's the best method to ban that ip [what is bruteforcig a server]
what was logged on the logger?
I need to ban the ip on the router pc.

How can i send the bad ip to the router, to ban it?

Just run a cronjob, and e.g.: scp the list of ip's from the logger to

Or is there any offical method for this?

I'm just asking for docs/howtos.. :\ to get started..

Situation: someone tries to bruteforce into a server, and the logger
get's a log about it [e.g.: ssh login failed].

What's the best method to ban that ip [what is bruteforcig a server]
what was logged on the logger?
I need to ban the ip on the router pc.

How can i send the bad ip to the router, to ban it?

Just run a cronjob, and e.g.: scp the list of ip's from the logger to
the router, then ban the ip from the list on the router pc?

Or is there any offical method for this?

I'm just asking for docs/howtos.. :\ to get started..

Thank you!

Dear Vadkan,

You could use PF for this by using a table for brute forcing:

siteXX.tgz and install.site behaviour questions

2010-03-20 Thread a b
Hi,

Would appreciate it if someone could spare a few minutes to outline the
reasons for the following behaviour :

1/ Why does OpenBSD not chown files to
root ?

For example, in my test siteXX.tgz, I had a custom /etc/sudoers
file.

However because this file was created on a different machine as a
non-root user, on the OpenBSD box, it now has an abritary number reflecting
the user ID on the other machine. As a result sudo doesn't work ... ;-(

2/
Why does OpenBSD expect the install.site file to be already chmod 755 ?

I
created this as a plain text file on another machine. I spent a long time
trying to figure out why the script was not triggering, until I tried chmod
755 before gzip'ing and re-running the installer.

Any wise words on the above
would be most appreciated !

 2/

Because those are the permissions that identify executable files.

Your two questions are really Why does OpenBSD treat these files like
all the other files? The answer is that those files are like all the
other files.

Re: recent hardware with older OpenBSD versions

 Hi!

We're using OpenBSD 4.3 kernels on a larger number of machines.

 Regards,
 T.

Allow me to ask you to think on a few things. OpenBSD gets better with
each release in terms of the hardware it supports, and new hardware is
just about always going to have new stuff on it.

Given this you don't want to try and stuff an older version onto new
hardware--you won't save any more (your time in researching this is
worth sometime)--and you won't have as good a selection of hardware
sensors, etc.

If you have to make a new system you might as well use the latest.
OpenBSD *easy* to install. For an existing system replacement you
ought to be able to install the OS in 9 to 25 minutes depending on
the size of the disks, take your backup of /etc/conf (and /var/www/conf,
plus others?) for config stuff, add the packages, and move your
data over. Testing, proper testing should take longer than everything
I mentioned.

The changes to modern op systems between releases needs to be
understood. Look at http://openbsd.org/plus.html and you will see nearly
2400 changes between 4.3 and 4.7, and those are ones that were
logged.

Don't be afraid of change.

From the OpenBSD FAQ:
The siteXX.tgz file set is, like the other file sets, a gzip(1)
compressed tar(1) archive rooted in '/' and is un-tarred like the
other sets with the options xzphf.

The Fine Manual page for tar describes the -p option as:
Preserve user and group ID as well as file mode regardless of the
current umask(2)

So it just works like advertised ;)

To deal with the permission there are a few possibilities
Adjust the permissions, owner or group in the install.site script. Or
do this before tarring up the siteXX.tgz file.

Or because patch(1) does not alter permissions, use it in the
install.site script:

# -
echo --- patch script for: sudoers --- BEGIN

# --- edit the following line if needed
FILE=/etc/sudoers
#FILE=$( basename ${FILE} )

Why does OpenBSD expect the install.site file to be already chmod 755 ?

I created this as a plain text file on another machine. I spent a long
time
trying to figure out why the script was not triggering, until I tried chmod
 755 before gzip'ing and re-running the installer.

Because as explained above, the siteXX.tgz file is untarred using -p.

I use the following install.site script template, which sources the
actual postinstall script with the sh . sourcing command, here for
the gutenberg host.

#!/bin/sh
INSTALL_LOG=./var/log/install.report
install -m 660 /dev/null ${INSTALL_LOG}

. ./postinstall_gutenberg 21 | tee ${INSTALL_LOG}
cat END

$0 : done

END

This way you can monitor the install.site script actions and possible
errors on both the console and have it logged to the
/var/log/install.report file as well.
