Unless you are running tmux inside screen, you should not use TERM=screen outside. You should have TERM=screen /inside/ tmux. tmux will set that itself but you should be careful not to change it in shell startup files. Probably I missed this. What's the recommended TERM entry to use

What does echo $TERM show before you attach tmux? again, this seems to be a putty specific issue. no problems whatsoever on local terminal. TERM is set to xterm before i run tmux, then it changes to screen. The xterm terminal description does not support colour so tmux does not
