Guiding this weekend in Aitkin County we found:
2 - Great Gray Owls on CR 18, and Pietz' Rd
2 - Short-eared Owls - 18 5, and Pietz' Rd
Yellow Rails - more than 22 in the McGregor Marsh, access easiest from the Soo
Line Trail
Sharp-tailed Sparrows singing along Hwy 65, LeCont's Sparrows, lots
An apparent family group of 3 Red Crossbills, was found yesterday
afternoon, May 31, in the extreme SE corner of Cass Co. To reach this
location: turn S off Hwy 210 on CR 36, 1/2 mi W of the Crow Wing Co
line; in 2 mi CR 36 curves W, at this corner turn left, and go 1/4 mi
to the open pine
This morning, I awoke to the song of a Kentucky warbler in my yard in Normanna
Twp. I know this doesn't seem possible, but after searching on and off for
about a half hour, getting only a fleeting glance because it was skulking in
deep vegetation, I played a recorded call. It responded
hi birders, My resident night hawk is flying around during the midle of the
day today! i see them flying durind the day in migration but never feeding

I have seen that before - my guess is that it is not that uncommon but that
since they are not calling they just aren't noticed as much.

We met Florida friends in Duluth for some St. Louis and Lake County birding
over Memorial Day weekend.
Nothing extraordinary but yesterday morning (5/31) we came across a recently
fledged WOOD THRUSH being fed by a parent along Grassy Point Trail (site #1
on the North Shore Birding Trail in south

Well while walking the dogs in the Minnehaha Dog Park in the Metro
area yesterday we were saddened to discover a dead baby/young
pileated. The good news is they are nesting there and obvously had a
