Tonight I spent some time in the marsh to the north of Boy Bay on Leech Lake
- I didn't stay out late enough to listen for Yellow Rails. I posted a map
and explanation of this location on my blog (see link below).
Highlights:
Nelson's Sparrow - hard to estimate number given light conditions
Stopped by 180th St. Marsh in Vermillion Twshp late on Thursday.

Semipalmated Plover, a few Dowitchers and close to 300 Lesser Yellowlegs.
At 9:00 last evening, an Eastern Whip-poor-will was calling in the ravine off

This morning, a block from my home in Brooklyn Center, at the corner of
Ekberg Ave and France Ave N., I was surprised to see a raptor emerge
from between two houses on the western side of France Avenue. The bird
was flying two feet off of the ground, so I expected it to be the

Janet McMillen found a northern mockingbird along the Heartland Trail on the
east side of Park Rapids, Hubbard County, this morning. It was observed at
close range singing a variable repertoire of songs. The site is between
County Roads 1 and 4 where the trail passes near the golf course.

The Tower Day is when we spend the whole day in a tower (that my
husband I built 6 years ago) watching the different species of birds that are
around. We do this once a month, all year long. This day is strickly a birding
day for us.

A Golden winged warbler was repeatedly seen and heard by a number of observers
this afternoon at TS Roberts Sanctuary in Mpls.
Also noted in the sanctuary was a blue headed vireo and a gh owl sitting on her
nest with two young.
Spotted a gorgeous male RTH at 4:15 on my syrup feeder which had been
put out only an hour before. What a beautiful day!

cormorants fishing in the middle of the lake. (The little Jack Russell was
actually more fascinated by a pair of wood ducks sunning.) I had my binoculars
with me, and it was great to see every head as it came up from the
