Saturday, December 14, we observed four Great Grey Owls along County 18, both
East and West of Pietz's Road in Aitkin County. In the morning we saw two owls
perched on telephone poles West of Pietz's and one just East of Hebron
Cemetery. In the afternoon, from 1:00 to 2:00 we observed
Yesterday (Saturday,14) we observed 6 great grey owls along county 18 from
3:00-4:00pm. Most perched in trees alongside the road.

I sent this early this morning and it came through on my cell, but not my
e-mail, so I'm resending. I added a 4th owl on Hwy 169 that I neglected to put
in the original e-mail.
Saturday, December 14, we observed three Great Grey Owls along County 18, both
East and West of Pietz's Road in
Two at 4pm today. One along Aitkin CR18 1 mile west of Hebron Cemetery. The
second along Hwy 169 1/2 mile south of CR18. Good look at a ruffed grouse
feeding along CR18 also. Nice end of a frustrating day with no eider in Duluth
and no winter finches and not much else either in Sax Zim Bog.
I checked Deer Creek, in Wild River State Park, for Wilson's Snipes today and
found 6 over-wintering birds. Deer Creek is larger, longer, wider, and more
open habitat as compared to Spring Creek, which I reported on last Thursday.
It is spring-fed, shallow, a muddy bottom, and stays ice-free
