There were three Merlins (family group?) zooming about the Dairy Queen on Old
61 in Forest Lake this morning. I saw them first at 0715, then one was heard
at noon. Interesting, a juvenile Cooper's hawk was seen at 0720, perched on a
telephone wire behind the DQ.

Foy hammers are coming to my Minnetonka feeders. This morning also saw foy
catbirds and a male Baltimore oriole enjoying the grape jelly set out for them
earlier in the week.

I have numerous fox sparrows scratching beneath my Minnetonka backyard bird
feeders.
As many as 8 have been seen at once. They don't really play nice when in close
proximity.

While watching a female goldfinch tear cotton off the nesting ball I hung on
my front deck, I observed a mink trundle across my driveway from the pond in
front. I loved Texas during my recent trip, but only in Minnesota.
At 6:45 pm an American Bittern is repeatedly calling from the marsh in front of
my home in Minnetonka.
I was able, with the kind and gracious assistance of Bob Janssen, to
locate the Yellow-throated warbler at 0930 this morning. The bird was
at the same walking bridge as previously described by Doug Kieser on May
5.

Recovering from cancer surgery has its rewards. Watching out my front window I
have seen between 25-50 redpolls feeding on my deck.
Today I attempted to re-locate the peregrine falcons at the High Bridge,
without success. I then drove to the 180th street marsh in Dakota County. From
the turn onto 180th from 52 to the marsh itself I saw nearly 80 Horned larks
from the car.
I took the first left east of the marsh and

The bird was on the ground under some trees.
I posted the sighting today as its the first I've had at my home (I'm kind of
house-bound) this winter. I get lots of them in other seasons (they come to my

An adult Cooper's hawk was seen flying over Springbrook, at a height of about
100' in a SW direction. The bird was flying unhurried but seemingly
purposefully, like it definitely knew where it was headed.
Has there been any info on COHA nests in this area?

At the very last second the intended prey collapsed and dropped. The hawk did a
frontal roll in pursuit and both dropped from sight.
The quest was apparently unsuccessful however as the hawk rose into sight,
empty handed. It spiraled away to the north.

At about 3:30 this afternoon I heard an american bittern call twice from a
wetland across the street from the Babe Ruth league baseball field on
Minnetonka Blvd.
I did not locate the bird and twice was all it was heard.

I couldn't find what I thought was a bird hike conducted by the Wild River
Audubon chapter, but I did see 34 species, including 5 thrushes, in about 4

At 0730 the bird was standing on the floating dock at Lake Calhoun, among about
150 other gulls, mostly RBGU. There were a few HEGU mixed in.
At 0736 the entire group took wing and flew to the SE.

A Philadelphia vireo was seen at Coon Rapids dam this afternoon at 1500. The
very cooperative bird was seen on the peninsula to the south of the dam on the
east bank of the river.
A Golden winged warbler was repeatedly seen and heard by a number of observers
this afternoon at TS Roberts Sanctuary in Mpls.
Also noted in the sanctuary was a blue headed vireo and a gh owl sitting on her
nest with two young.
After reading about terns at French park, I drove there at 1545. They were not
there in the high winds. However, driving east on Co 9 I looked at the small
Lost Lake to the south of the road and noted a number of gulls resting on the
water.

At 1500 hours on Sunday I saw an Ovenbird at Westwood Nature Center in St Louis
Park. The bird was seen by the parking lot adjacent to the path leading up to
the Center building- on the left side about 50' in from the parking lot. That
area is proving to be a hot spot that seems to attractive
Yesterday I found a Lark sparrow at Bunker Hills park in Anoka Co.
The bird was seen about 1/4 mile SE of the parking lot at the main park road
and the road into the camping area. I had followed the cross country ski trail
and was at the bottom of a hill when the bird flew across the trail,
I hit upon a horde of Hermit thrushes this morning. At least 40 of them along
the east end of the lake.
Also noted were Scaup, ring necked duck, wood duck, rc kinglet, b creeper and y
r warbler.
I looked in vain for a winter wren- perfect habitat but no luck.

In my 30 minute visit there this morning before work the big news was a
FOY MOSQUITO. Oh no, Lord help us if they are this early.
Some yr warblers, a few yb sapsuckers and the usual suspects. No
kinglets or phoebes or sparrows noted.

I saw 6 Eastern bluebirds today at Bunker Hills park. Most were singing males
but I did see one pair (m and f)on a nest box.
I also observed a total of 5 turkey vultures sailing high overhead, heading due

walking down from the parking lot (and not at the same time)
This morning, while working the Bloomington Bass Ponds, a coyote was spotted
walking across the ice of the far pond. At that time I was at the south corner
of the second pond. The coyote came within 100 yards of me and ambled down the
west side of the second pond. The assorted waterfowl
At 1630 this afternoon I heard a Common Snipe call (once) from the south end of
SNC. The bird was not seen however.
Then, at 1700 while driving SB on 169 at the RR overpass I saw a Sharp shinned
hawk that for all the world looked as if it was tracking the train that was
then going (eastbound)
A pair (male and female) of Buffleheads was at the dam at 1430 today. They, a
number of H and C mergansers were in the scope, making for interesting
comparisons.
They, and a number of other ducks, were in the sheltered boat launching cove
north of the dam on the east side.

the flat island south of the dam.

A Peregrine falcon chased a Pigeon into a window at my office building this
morning. The falcon then spent an hour sitting on a light pole in the parking
lot while the pigeon sat stunned and gasping on the ground. The falcon
ultimately flew to the southeast.
Two Bald Eagles have been seen throughout the winter on the west side of the
dam, about 500 yards north of the dam itself. They have seemed to favor one
particular tree and yesterday I observed them in a spectacular courtship flight
display.
