Took a MRVAC group up to Carlos Avery today and we were able to get some
great looks at the Short-eared Owls, that have been reported from there for
the last month or so. Still plenty of them around and Rough-legged Hawks
were also observed in good numbers there to. Roads in

Doug Kieser was kind enough to post some of the images I took of the Pt.
Douglas Slaty-backed Gull on Jan. 15. The bird was present on the Wisconsin
side of the channel when these images were taken.
I may be able to get away later this week to chase the Slaty-backed.
However, my growing but still limited knowledge of MN doesn't include the
specific location. Could anyone share directions with me? I would be
coming south on 169 to 94, or similarly.
Saturday's busy-ness precluded serious
I arrived at Pt. Douglas at about 2PM today and the SLATY-BACKED GULL
was still there along with a handful of Herring Gulls. By 2:30 the
gulls were all gone. There was very little open water left and it is
crowded with Canada Geese, Common Goldeneyes and Mallards. I'm guessing

The Green-tailed Towhee survived the below zero temperatures last night. It
was at least 17 degrees below zero in Mountain
