There was a Glacous Gull feeding among the Ring-billed along the sandbar in the
Mississippi across from Xcel Energy near the high bridge. I have no interest
in aging gulls-suffice to say this individual appeared very pale (2nd winter?).
Seems rather late for this species. Falcons not
This morning I found a beautiful male YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and two EASTERN
PHOEBES in my yard in Cottage Grove.
Yesterday I checked out Neal Ave. again with Abrahm Simons and we got great
looks at some of the LAPLAND LONGSPURS that are just south of 70th St. I'd
estimate there were at
Observed 18 species of waterfowl along the Miss River in Houston County
yesterday, including the first Blue-winged Teal of the year for me and a nice
male Ruddy Duck. Also saw several pelicans flying north along the main
channel. The river continues to be mostly frozen except for moving
I briefly scoped at Lake Byllesby this morning from the northwest corner.
I could not identify any Greater White-fronted Geese, but most of the
other species of waterfowl that have been reported were still there in good
numbers, including: Canada Goose, Cackling Goose, Tundra Swan, Mallard,
Several ospreys have been seen returning to their nests in the past few days in
the metro
area! They have been slower to return this year as a result of the snow and
frozen lakes.
With many lakes still frozen we expect we might see them sporadically as they
check their
territories and then
Hi everyone,
Many thanks for the help in the locations to the 180th Street Marsh - I think I
will hopefully be able to find it now just fine. I think I'll try to find other
spots
around there too. If I remember correctly from last year near Randolph and near
the cemetery are some good ponds
Has anyone heard any singing saw-whet owls yet? I'm up to 340 miles of
nighttime road surveys in St. Louis and Lake Counties, and still haven't heard
one. No boreal owls either.

It was another great morning at Rapids Lake MNWR. Despite the northwest winds,
today saw the best blackbird movement of the spring. That isn't saying a
whole lot since blackbird movement has been pretty sparse. The male Purple
Martin was perched late this morning on a road sign near the
It looks like the link I posted about the Twin Cities Metro Osprey Watch may
have failed somehow, so here's it is again...

There is much information there about ospreys in the metro and our
organization. Please report
Today, at 3:45 pm, close to 200 Tundra Swans were resting in water-filled
fields along the east side of Hwy 20, about 1/2 mile north of 280th St.

After failing to see any significant movement of Bald Eagles today in Duluth
(31 March) in the very strong NW winds (gusts to 37 mph), I grudgingly opted to
look at gulls instead. The mouth of Miller Creek and the ice behind WLSSD off
27th Ave West had many gulls, including 450 Herring Gulls, 2
Well, my spring break in Two Harbors with my family has started out on a
(literal) high note. I was walking out of the Holiday on the south end of town
at dusk this evening, and looked up as a large raptor landed at the very top of
a tall pine across 61. At first, I thought it was an eagle. But

30/13 Enjoyed a fun trip to SW Minnesota. We spent time birding in Rock,
Pipestone and Nobles county. There was a strong migration of Geese on the 28th
and lots of Blackbirds and Grackles moving through on the 29th.
