With this past weekend being the opening of duck hunting here in Minnesota,
based upon the hunters I spoke with, it seemed wood ducks, along with teal,
were the main birds bagged.

I am writing my column this week on nesting phoebes and a cowbird that
dominated the nest with two phoebe young.
I have a pretty good pic of the phoebe young dwarfed by the cowbird, but
adult phoebe pics are not very good, so would appreciate an adult pic if
anyone has one I can use.
After a recent encounter with a Shrike at my bird feeder, I decided this
might be a good bird for readers of my weekly Nature Nut column to learn

On Sunday, March 19th I observed 60-70 kettling Turkey Vultures while biking in
NW Rochester. Ten minutes later I got a call from a friend who said there
were about 60 Turkey Vultures circling above his house and roosting in a
cottonwood tree in his backyard a mile from where I spotted them.

A presumably migrating group of three Common Loons were spotted on a small lake
behind a dam on the Zumbro River in downtown Rochester yesterday.
One of them appeared to be in full juvenile plumage.
Wondering how unusual this is.

Many of you have helped me over the past few years when I needed a bird pic for
my weekly Nature Nut column.
However, this time around I am hoping someone who has maybe done birding in
Texas or Florida might have gotten a picture of an Armadillo I could use to go

I just walked around our local City Park, home to about a 150 resident geese,
and found four dead, and one almost dead, none of apparent cause.
Usually I only see an occasional dead one during hunting season, so assuming
this is the Avian Flu.
Anyone know if DNR or others are testing these
