I will be leading a MRVAC field trip to the Canon River Bottoms on Sunday,
May 23rd at 8am. This is a leisurely hike on a little known state forest
trail on an old railroad bed through river bottom forest near where the Canon
River meets the Mississippi River near Redwing. We will be looking for early
migrants and Cuckoos which nest in the area.

This hike is free and open to all. No need to contact me to let me know you
will be joining us. Just show up. Make sure you bring insect repellent,
although if you wish to volunteer as mosquito bait, you will be welcome.
Bring a lunch if you wish to join us for an after lunch destination, as yet
 undetermined.

Directions: From Highway 52, take Highway 50 towards Redwing. This road is
absorbed by Highway 61 and becomes a four lane highway, which comes down a
major hill to cross the Canon River. After you pass the turn-off for the
casino, make a left at the next intersection (CR 46) near the BOTTOM of the
hill. Take the fork to the right (Collischan Road). Follow the road about
two and a half miles and take the fork to the left into the parking area for
 the trail head.

Re: [mou-net] [Mnbird] Interesting vulture activity--Plymouth MN

2015-04-08 Thread Richard Carlson
This A growing world wide phenomenon. Apparently a learned behavior since it
is so localized. The worst vultures are at Everglades Park where Black
Vultures destroy both wipers and window seals. Damage can be $1,000's. Also
reported attacking wipers are crows in England, Australia and NZ. Keas in NZ
are notorious for attacking car wipers and seals.

[mou-net] AZ to Aitkin

2009-12-17 Thread Richard Carlson
We find ourselves on a sudden trip to Aitkin, MN.  (We're attending the funeral
my wife's 97 year old Aunt.)  We hope to bird in the area Sunday am.  We've
been there many times, but not birding in the Winter.  I've seen recent
reports, but any tips would be appreciated.

Will trade for expert birding assistance in Tucson where I hope my winter
resident Broad-billed, Costa's and Anna's hummers aren't too stressed when my
feeders go empty.

[mou-net] Escape to Texas

2009-02-12 Thread Richard Carlson
the Blue Bunting female, but missed the Grosbeak.
Then drove to see the Ferruginous Pygmy Owl at San Miguelito Ranch with
Leticia Tijerina bun...@aol.com and two photo fanatics. You need real 4 wheel
drive to get in here. The bird did not cooperate at first. We waited and
waited for hours until we heard it hooting off in the woods. It turned out the
little bugger was sitting behind us in a hole at the base of a crotch in a tree
that was shaped like a perfect speaker. He rewarded out patience by hopping
out on a branch and doing perfect poses for an hour. Also saw a Sedge Wren
here. Stayed at nearby La Quinta Suites and ate at Leticia’s brother’s
restaurant.

Fri. January 16
Finally success with the Frontera Crimson-collared Grosbeak. It was showing
itself in the drizzle and we ran in to see it at 10 a.m. The area was full of
Clay-colored Thrushes and Warblers. We then drove to Quinta Mazatlan a lovely
spot with great feeders but no hoped for Tropical Paraulas. Finally we drove
to Chapeno for our last chance at Red-billed Pigeon. Lovely spot with lovely
Ringed Kingfisher. We were planning to wait for the Red-billed Pigeon flight,
but the Coyotes landed a boatload of illegals at our feet and we ran the blazes
out of there. We stayed at the Zapata Holiday Inn Express with mobs of
fishermen there for a fishing contest. Avoid this place on weekends.

Sat. Jan. 17
We tried San Ignacio but the bird area was flooded. Finally we drove to San
Antonio for an excellent celebration dinner at Landry’s.

Jan 18
Easy flight home from San Antonio except for racing between gates in Dallas.

[mou] Little Blue Heron

2006-06-14 Thread Richard Carlson
Monday 6/12 at about 7 p.m. there was an adult Little
Blue Heron along I-94 S in the pond in the exit right
before 494 splits off. Yes, I was going 65 mph, but
the light was perfect, the bird is distinctive, I've
seen hundreds of them in other states, and it was a
very clear view. Large, all dark heron, no white,
grey bill, reddish purple head, neck and chest, dark
blue back and belly.

I was hoping to get back for a better view, but I've
been stuck with doing my Mom's %^*((^% taxes.
