Simple: by making a software CPU and a software MMU. In this way, your
software CPU interpretes the programs in stead of the Z80.

Ofcourse it will kill performance but it does work...

] But wait a minute... You said 8086? I believe the Z80
] is also called 8080, right? Does these processors have
] any relation between them?
Yes.

The 8080 was developed by Intel corporation.

After developing the 8080, the boss of Intel had some ideas about how to
develop the successor. One of the main architects working for Intel had a
completely different idea about how to develop the successor. The main
architect could simply not agree with the boss, so he resigned and founded
his own company: Zilog.

Intel developed the successor of the 8080 using their ideas, it was called
the 8086, which was a full 16-bit processor. This processor was chosen by IBM
for their low-end business computer which eventually became the PC as we all
know it. Please note that Intel also developed a trimmed-down version of the
8086: the 8088. This processor has the same instruction set as the 8086, but
it has a multiplexed 8-bit databus in stead of a full 16-bit databus.

Zilog developed the successor of the 8080 using their ideas. This successor
was called Z80 and is still being used today. Mainly as cheap embedded
processor for simple devices. And ofcourse in our beloved MSX system.

Is translated Game Master 2 manual necessary?

2000-07-16 Thread Takamichi Suzukawa
Let's begin some new topic...
While reading old part of http://www.msxnet.org/gtinter/wnew-e.htm , I
noticed I forgot many subjects I considered.
One of them was translation of Konami no Shin 10bai kaatorijji, or so-called
Game Master 2 manual. Size will be about 45KB or so and not an overwhelming,
but still timestaking effort. So I only translated one page. ^^; (you can
find that page in RuMSX help file)

In my opinion, given scarce populatiry of GM2, this subject is much less
valid than it seems. Tell me negative opinions, please. ;)

Note RuMSX help file contains my translation of entire FM-PAC manual, which
isn't much important.

RE: Philips parts

2000-07-16 Thread Hans-Peter Zeedijk

The switch freezes (disconnects) the processor clock. It is voor service
purpose only. I am not using my original 8250 keyboard anymore because I
have the 8250 build into PC case, so I rewired a PC keyboard to be used with
it. (Advantage: I have a 25pin d-connector on it and I can use a printer
extention cable to connect it to the MSX (in the PC case a printerport
connector cable from a PC mainboard)

Sega and Sonyc

2000-07-16 Thread Manuel Pazos

Sorry, wrong address :(

Yes , but is an interesting question.

Maybe, but I don't think so. I were in Den-yu Land last year and met
Teruo Yabumoto from Sega. When he saw a Sonic clone running on an MSX, he
got surprised. He liked Sonyc and bought one copy :)

We were talking a while and he said that there was not problem about
copyright or licence. Sega don't care about 'small proyects'

But Yokoi from Front Line and Tsujikawa told me that ASCII could
distribute Sonyc, but I must change name and main character, because then it
wouldn't be a 'small proyect'

Regards,

Manuel

Re: Sunrise's IDE Question

2000-07-16 Thread Jose Angel Morente

"Is there a program that emulates FDD?"

START.COM and HDDEMU 1.04 can emulate almost every game.
(Still having trouble with the Microcabins, though)

START.COM doesn't work very well, and HDDEMU only runs on MSXturboR.

It would be nice if someone write a FDD emulator as good as MegaSCSI
one is.

2000-07-16 Thread Jose Angel Morente

Maarten ter Huurne soltó algo así como:

In my opinion, translating with a hex editor is OK for intro demos or
action games. But in a game where text really matters, it will hurt the
game too much. You will have to recalculate pointers. And that is not
something you want to do by hand: too much work and too error-prone. So
you'll need to make a simple compiler.

I agree . I'm actually working on Randar 3 translation and I found
that making a compiler to re-allocate text is the best way I also
re-made some graphics so I had to make a graphic compressor as well

I think that HEX edition is not a good way to work on RPG translations ...

The compiler approach isn't as hard as it may sound. Sure, you'll need
some basic knowledge about compilers, but it's a simple compiler. And once

Well I don't know any word about compilers but making the compiler
for Randar 3 was very easy for me :) I used a PC and made the compiler
in QuickBasic.

Re: Sega will visit MSX Den-yu Land 2000

2000-07-16 Thread Jose Angel Morente

my memories about Sega games on the MSX don't get me quite excited. :)

Sega made some great arcade games (Outrun!), which were ported poorly to
MSX. I wonder if a lot of ports in the old days didn't use the graphical
possibilities of MSX because they were mainly intended for the
 ZX-Spectrum?

Sega ported those games directly from Master System/Mark III.
That console is poor compared with MSX graphics, but it has a better
graphic hardware (horizontal scroll, multicolor patterns and sprites, etc.)

Because of this, games ported by Sega are not as playable as they should be.
