[mythtv-users] Monitor CD/DVD with Fedora?

2005-10-28 Thread Matt Goebel
Has anyone managed to get fedora to play nice with Myth's monitor CD/DVD
functionality? I've got myth setup up to do that, specifically for DVD's to
bring
up the menu. No matter what I try it doesn't seem to work though. I've edited
/etc/fstab so that my dvd-rom shows up as:

/dev/hdc/media/cdrom ufs,iso9660
exec,ro,noauto,user 0 0

That seems to work so that HAL (fstab-sync) doesn't re-write /etc/fstab. Myth
just
ignores it though. If I use anything besides /dev/hdc (say /dev/dvd, a symlink
to
/dev/hdc) fstab-sync removes all dvd-rom related entries and adds it's own
again.
Is there some specific device or mount point I need to have in fstab for Myth?
How
do I work around HAL to do that?

Re: [mythtv-users] Video Card Suggestions Please

2005-10-28 Thread Ali Asad Lotia
While this may seem like overkill for myth there is an AOpen GeForce
6600 card with 256MB of RAM on it. The big advantage of that much vram
is that if you decide to repurpose that machine, it will be set for
anything else.
the link to the newegg page is:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814135183

It runs $105. The other advantage is that if certain video filters are
written to take advantage of the memory on your video card, you will
have the extra ram available. i'm not sure which ones do that yet, but
it is apparently on the roadmap for some projects.

Re: [mythtv-users] Video Card Suggestions Please

2005-10-28 Thread Matt Goebel
In any case the new machine will be a P4/3.2GHz on an Intel 945
 series motherboard.

Why? AMD64 is better in every way. You're crazy to buy Intel for anything
other
then their M series these days... Plus AMD chipsets/motherboards are better.
Until
Intel comes out with a decent competive product again It's really a no brainer.
AMD64 3200 (or higher) and Nforce 4 based motherboard is a good combo for your
price
range.

 (1) Im going to assume the video on the motherboard is not going
 to be acceptable for MythTV.

Onboard video is always junk... Intel boards in particular. It may or may not
work
with Linux/Myth but it's not worth the time and effort.

 (2) My previous experience is with AGP based boards (I have a
GeforceFX 5200 on my other MythTV machine) but the 945 has PCIE.

PCI-e x16 works fine with Linux.

What card(s) should I be looking at with this interface?

Nvidia only... The 6200 is the cheapest PCI-e x16 you can get without a fan
(you
don't want a fan if this is a frontend!) at ~$55. Any decent brand should work.

My master backend (part time frontend) is also my primary network server (
mail,openvpn,samba,dhcp/dns,firewall,etc,etc too). I've got a 3200+ /w an
Nforce4
board, 2GB of memory, 1TB in hardware RAID 5 (~730GB actual), and a PCI-e x16
Nvidia
6200. Doing commercial flagging and recording 4 shows at once (PVR500,2xPVR250
in
mulitple systems all accessing the same NFS share) I rarely see above 50% CPU
usage
or 800MB of actual memory used.

 Greetings

Had a bit of a surprise when I looked at the mythweb channel editor...

It looks like every time I run mythfilldatabase I get an extra bunch of

 list
has them? although I'm seeing channels that I have got set up correctly
 being duplicated as well.

I think I'm up to about 800 extra (duplicated) channels now :-((

 Running SVN as follows:
 URL: http://cvs.mythtv.org/svn/trunk/mythtv
 Repository UUID: 7dbf422c-18fa-0310-86e9-fd20926502f2
 Revision: 7535

xmltv data is fed manually using
 /usr/local/bin/mythfilldatabase --file 1 -1 /tmp/epg/latest.xml
 /usr/local/bin/mythfilldatabase --file 2 -1 /tmp/epg/latest.xml

to feed my two video sources

Robin, where are the latest.xml listings coming from. Using mr.geek.nz I
get some strange channels added (although I don't think I am up to 800
 yet!)

I lied - I've just dumped the mytheb channel page of 20990 lines and at 17
lines per channel (with headers etc) I get 1246 channels where I should
 only have about 30.

These channels have been allocated incrementing callsigns, on video source
1 they start at 1000 and for source 2 they start at 2000 (which seems
normal). I'm now up to 1797 and 2554 (which isn't).

The xml data is from mr.geek and is updating existing channels OK, its
just creating all these extra ones. Guess I'll have to ty running
mythfilldatabase manually so I can post the messages it generates. I can
then sed/awk the rubbish out of the xml file.

Further investigation shows that it IS the xml file I'm downloading. Most
of the extra channels are the ones I didn't bother to put the xmltv data
in for since I don't subscribe to them, the other extra channels are due
to an occation change in spelling - 'E' is sometimes 'E!' etc.

Is there a simple way to delete all entries in the channel table that have
a null channum field? (I know nothing about mysql).

Cheers

[mythtv-users] Multi-card setup with only two cards allowed to record

Hi All,

I've been looking around and can't seem to find the info i'm looking for so

2 pvr-250 cards in it; I also have two separate frontend units each with a
wintv-go card in them. What i want to do is to have recordings only occur on
the two pvr-250 cards in the server, I want the two cards in the frontends to
be used as a local tuner for that frontend only. Does that make sense? The
reasoning behind this is because if the cards in the frontends start recording
then the frontend becomes really slow and sometimes locks-up. So i only want
the cards in the server to do the recording, and the cards in the frontends for
tv viewing only for that specific frontend. Is this possible? Thanks in advance

[mythtv-users] PVR-350 sound loop into soundcard

2005-10-28 Thread James Grant
Hey I have an audio question - with all the hundreds of cables i have lying
around here, I haven't found one yet that will take the PVR-350 TV out L/R
RCA audio and allow me to feed them back into my sound card's 'Line In'.

The cable that i thought for sure would work is a spare computer speaker cable
for old stereo sound cards that just have L/R. its a small jack on one end
that plugs into the speaker plug on the soundcard, with two RCA's on the
other end to plug into the L/R speaker. I figured if it works to go 'out' it
would also work to come back in??

I have a SB Audigy sound card, and in alsamixer, turned Line in up to max,
Mic in (just in case) up to max , (and actually every other control there
just to be sure) and i still don't get any sound coming out of my computer
speakers.

The only thing I can think of, is maybe the line is is mono and the stereo
jack isn't making connections in the right place? I'm pretty sure its stereo
though, so

has anyone else had any luck feeding the sound from the 350 TV out back into
their sound card?

(i know that there's sound coming out, because i can plug the RCA jacks
directly into the back of my TV and the sound works fine... but I'd really
prefer the sound to go through the computer speakers so the volume can be
controlled with myth (not to mention, my computer speakers blow the TV
speakers away any day).

Thanks,
  James

As for his original question, there is no way to force those cards to be
reserved for LiveTV only. You can set them to be lowest priority for

It sounds like the frontends are not beefy enough to handle software
encoding even for recording, so LiveTV using the cards in the frontend
is probably out of the question as well.

However, if you're willing to give up the ability to time-shift live TV,
and can live without an EPG, then you could use the frontend tuner
cards as simple frame-grabbers and watch TV using xawtv (or any other
TV viewing program, like tvtime). To do this, Myth doesn't need to
know anything about the cards, so you need to remove their
configuration with mythtv-setup. Then, all you need is to re-configure
the menu item for Watch TV to launch xawtv instead of using Myth;
this is done by editing the XML file for the menu. The EXEC command
is what you want. (Someone may tell you to use EXECTV, but that's
only necessary if Myth is configured to use the card for recording as
well.) Of course, you may have to make some adjustments to
your .lircrc, etc.

excellent thread! :) i had to come back to the above statement
because i've seen it mentioned before and am just looking for a little
  clarity.

storing to multiple directories - what is meant by that?
do you want to store all your Lost episodes in /myth/tv/Lost, and all
of your SG-1 episodes in /myth/tv/SG-1? so you have subdirectories
  under /myth/tv.

or do you mean breaking outthe directories into their own partitions -
  /dev/hdb1 = /myth/tv/Lost
  /dev/hdb2 = /myth/tv/SG-1

you can kind of do this now, can't you? without the subdirectories -
  /dev/hdb1 = /myth/tv
  /dev/hdb2 = /myth/video
  etc...

There have been a number of ways proposed. My current thought of the
best is to allow you to create storage groups. You can add
directories to a storage group and list how much space in MB (or how
much to leave free on that directories partition). When you record a TV
show you can have it save it to the general storage group, or have it
save it to a specific one.

The difficulty in any mutliple directory approach is what happens when
you have 5 GB free in this directory, 20GB free in another, and 500K in
another. Do we split up video streams, do we move files between them,
and so on. a 4 hour HD show that's 36GB can be tricky. If you had 6
drives and anywhere from 5GB to 20GB free, which do you store to? Add
in auto-expire and it gets even more tricky.

Noone has felt like they know how things should be done enough to
actually write it, so support has never been added.

 --Brandon

I had a similar concept, though slightly different, i think... My idea was to
have a general mythtv recordings directory, under which all harddrives would
be mounted (ie /mythrec/1 /mythrec/2 /mythrec/3 etc). Have one for new
recordings. The rest would be for recordings flagged for archiving of
sorts. So say you want to keep every episode of a favorite show you could
flag it for archiving and it would place it onto one of the other directories
(Drive). If a show is flagged for archiving before its recorded it could be
recorded to one of these other directories automatically, if not it would go
to the general recording directory and then later moved.
The other option is to just have myth look at all the drives as a general
recording space and let it fill drives as it see's fit. I wouldn't bother
trying to split shows across drives, if one drive has 500megs that won't fit
a single recordings, chalk it up to a minor loss and move on, there's a
reason you've got more than one drive. Its not as compact as an LVM but at
this point probably easier to set up for most people.

Does anyone know if KnopMyth supports creating LVM's?

the BTTV cards into the backend which may have the juice to do dual

However, I can induce a hard lockup on my box very easily. If I run a very data intensive process I _will_ get a hard lockup. I have moved commercial detection to my slave backend beacuse every 2-3 months I will get a hard lockup if I have a lot of commercial detection jobs running. Transcoding also causes issues. Of course I have an nforce2 chipset and I believe that it is the root of the problem. The only solace I can give you is that I have managed to configure my box to have really good uptime by keeping the large intensive jobs on the slave.

Ah, I sit corrected!

Sometimes it's sufficient to just aim an IR blaster toward the wall

wall to get to the equipment.

I'm guessing this is what they intended you to do, not put the

Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-350 sound loop into soundcard

2005-10-28 Thread Bjarne Wichmann Petersen
Perfect thread to hijack.

I have another sound-loop issue. I've got my PVR 350 connected to the TV
through the scart-cable that came with the board. This cable also have a
small jack that plugs right into the PC's soundcard (Mic in this case). The
soundcard is then connected to some loudspeakers (not the TV).

Now, all I get through the loudspeakers if Mic is unmuted are the sounds
from channel 1 no matter if I'm watching live-TV, some recordings or do
nothing at all. The sound feed to the TV through the scart-cable are correct.

If I watch a recording or live-TV, no sound is fed to the
soundcard/loudspeakers. But sound comes through the scart to the TV.

If I watch som transcoded recording, the TV isn't fed any sound, but the
soundcard/loudspeakers are.

Now, how do I clean up this mess?

According to manufacturers warranty's upon a SMART pre-fail warning you
are allowed to, if the drive is still under warranty, get a replacement.

IMHO, SMART is like the sound from a rifle - if you're in
front of the bullet you'll never hear it. I've had three
SMART-enabled drives fail on me. In every case, the email
saying a drive is dying was just about the last thing
written to the drive before it went R/O, and none of them
lasted long enough to copy the contents off to another
drive. Since then I've switched to RAID5 so I'll get the
array is degraded message when there's actually time to
 do something about it.

I've never had SMART not throw a flag early enough. Even when my powersupply
was causing problems SMART knew something was wrong and is the only reason I
was able to rescue one of the drives. I lost one because I kept running them
not knowing what the problem was.

I suggest paying the extra shipping cost to receive the new drive so you
can copy your data over. Keep an eye on the drive. I'll usually put it
into a ro mount and if gets really bad I unplug power to it until I get a
  new drive.

The drives that failed on me were two Maxtors and a Western
Digital. The Maxtors lasted long enough to be obsolete so
I just chucked them. The WD was only about 9 months old.
WD's RMA process allows you to give them a CC number and
they'll ship out the replacement by courier at no charge.
You then have 30 days to swap the drive and ship back the
defective one (at your expense) or else they charge the new
drive to your card. In my case, it was a 120Gb that failed
and they sent me a 160Gb replacement. All the same, when I
decided to switch to RAID5 I bought more Maxtor drives. If
they last long enough to make an RMA pointless then I'll be
 happy.

This is one nice thing about the RMA process, getting a larger drive! this has
happened to me twice ;-)

Can anyone give any advice on where to go from here?

Sure. The problem is almost certainly to do with interrupt sharing. In
my case it was a problem with the ACPI steering assigning too many
devices the same IRQ. I ended up fixing it by disabling unnecessary
onboard hardware (eg I don't need 8 USB controllers or onboard sound),
using acpi=off (is that different to your acpi=no ?) and re-positioning
the cards in the PCI slots. I would check your motherboard's manual
since some slots will share an interrupt whatever you do. You can also
assign specific slots a specific IRQ in the BIOS.

I've also heard that using SBLive cards can cause these sorts of issues
- and that's exactly what I am using. If I remove it and turn on ACPI
again it all works with no problems, but I need its SPDIF out. Ho hum.

Good luck.

Dump your database, backup your old release (depending on the OS you're
running and the distribution method, you could just keep RPMS, or use
tar), upgrade to SVN, test and verify all functionality.

If it breaks, blow away the DB, recreate, reload, and reload old
release.

Directions for dumping DB, dropping, recreating, and loading are here:
http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-22.html#ss22.5

Certainly this isn't foolproof b/c you may test everything out, and it
looks great, and then when a family member trys it, it breaks. :-) But
at least it's a nice way to get a quick preview of features.

It sounds like the frontends are not beefy enough to handle software

As I'm thinking about it, another option would be to swap. Put the
PVR-250s into the frontends where hardware encoding can happen and move
the BTTV cards into the backend which may have the juice to do dual

My setup for a Pronto ru890 can be seen here :
http://members.home.nl/mphm.janssen/linuxvideo/software/pronto/pronto.html

The advantage is that the buttons can be given their own icons and therefore
each function can be recognized far more easier than with a conventional
remote. Plus you have the advantage to automatically jump between menus,
which is quite nice when you select a video from mythTV and xine/mplayer
starts that automatically the main controls for that video player pop up.

Check ebay for a second hand one and the price may even be acceptable (I found
one for 75Euro).

I think there's a file called settings.pro (from memory) which lets
you override the target dir for install so you could use that to get
make install to install to the current location. I don't know what the
consequences of having simultaneous RPM and CVS installs, but it
sounds like the sort of thing that could turn ugly.

Better to use the --prefix=DIR setting in configure before 'make'ing the
compile.

Either run ./configure --help or open it in an editor to see all of the
available switches and their defaults.
'prefix' is usually set to /usr/local which means that the binaries will
end up in /usr/local/bin and the libs in /usr/local/lib etc.

Using --prefix=/usr will move everything 'up' one level.
If you install a new version into /usr and the old is in /usr/local then
which one gets called would depend upon the ordering of your $PATH
variable. Given the nature of linux, I suspect however, that each version,
if called directly would run quite happily because each would look for its
own libraries in its own path (ie: the old one would always look in
/usr/local/lib while the new one would only look to /usr/lib) This would
be fine until they start looking at the same database... and possibly
using different schemas.

Unless you wish to live dangerously, it would be best practice to rpm -e
the original version before 'make install' of the new *if they are going
into different places. If the same, then the new will over-write the old.

[mythtv-users] Problem with mythfilldatabase and UK listings

2005-10-28 Thread Jono Bacon
Hi all,

I am having a nightmare of a time configuring XMLTV for UK listings,
so I really hope you can help. Firstly, this is my box:

MythTV 0.18.1-5 in Ubuntu Breezy x86 on AMD64
 XMLTV 0.5.40-1ubuntu1

I have a WinTV DVB card in there, although there is no arial hooked up
and I am switching it for a PVR-350 when it arrives on Monday. The DVB
card is not tuned in at all.

 1. run mythtv-setup and clear my card and channel settings. In the
video sources I use the United Kingdom (alternative) which uses
tv_grab_uk_rt and I click Finish. At 50%, I flick to the terminal
window and type 'all' to accept all channels. I then press esc to exit
the setup program and run:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ mythfilldatabase

It then gives me the following output:

i too am curious about the future of MythTv. but i know better than
to ask about it. ;) it would be cool if there were updates from
decisions made by the devs that were posted on occassion.

I'd rather they spend their time writing code for Myth. That way, I'm
pleasantly surprised when I see new functionality--as opposed to
wondering why this vapor ware is never being completed. ;)

Jesse, one thing you could try is looking at some of the newer distro
releases. KnoppMyth R5A22 was recently released and includes MythTv
from SVN. it is a fairly quick and easy install on newer hardware.
if you're comfortable with tweaking Linux then i would say go ahead

and install it on your production machine (do a little research first,
and make backups ;)

AFAICT, it's 0.18-fixes, which primarily only contains bug fixes and no
new features. KnoppMyth experts, please feel free to correct me...

but i would be hesitant to tell anyone that just 'uses' MythTv to
upgrade their production system regardless of the distro being used.

Right. Thank you, Jesse and Andrew for taking this approach. This is
the right approach to take unless you're willing to invest considerable
time in doing your homework both before /and/ after the upgrade.
Anyone who decides to upgrade to SVN has the *responsibility* of keeping
up with the -dev and -commits lists (which takes a good bit of time).

Those who don't keep keep up with the lists/do their homework often
cause a lot of developer time to be wasted.--especially now that Trac is
in place. Very often, when something changes in SVN, a well-meaning
user (wanting to help the project) who hasn't been keeping up with the
changes will think he/she has identified a bug. So, instead of posting
to the lists to verify that it's a bug, the user submits a ticket to
Trac. Then a dev closes the ticket with a short message saying that
it's invalid. Since the user hasn't been keeping up with the changes,
he/she doesn't understand the short message, so the user reopens the
ticket, forcing the developer to spend significantly more time writing
up a longer, more detailed description of the changes that have been
made (and that were described in the previous commits/messages to the
dev list)--sometimes this keeps happening several times. All of this
interaction has taken some of the time the developer could have been
using to write more code and add more features. And, since it all
occurred on the Trac server instead of the lists, other users were
unable to contribute and lessen the burden on the devs.

So, is it possible to make Trac refuse new tickets without a patch or a
reference to a thread on the users or dev list? IMHO, that would be
very beneficial for the devs. And, what's beneficial for the devs is
beneficial for the users and their Myth boxes. ;)

Get a range expander to rebroadcast your signal. Put it on the floor of
the house between the backend and frontend.

It wouldbe much cheaper to build a directional antenna to focus the
transmissions in the right direction.

Check out the wireless hardware links page at www.seattlewireless.net.

Great discussions about antenna parameters and examples of how to build
your own.

To start with however, you should ensure that your existing antenna are
oriented correctly. IIRC, the antennas which come with, for example, the
Linksys router are intended to stand vertically so that they project
omni-directionally *in a horizontal plane*. Maybe you will get a better
signal just by putting both antenna horizontal.

The cheapest upgrade is to built a parabolic reflector or corner reflector
for the antenna on your wireless router. See the goodies at

   www.freeantennas.com

and build your own with some cardboard or card stock and aluminum foil.
The *only* critical dimension is getting the existing antenna in the
correct place relative to the reflector.

What happens is a hard lock up. It generally happens when I'm

This exact same thing was happening to me too with my KT6 Delta.

According to proc/interrupts, there shouldn't be a sharing problem. However,
I'm unsure if there is a difference between acpi=no and acpi=off. I'll try
off and see if I can pound away on the NIC and the hard drive and see what
happens.

vi /usr/src/linux-`uname -r`/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt

/acpi

acpi= [HW,ACPI] Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
   Format: { force | off | ht | strict }
force -- enable ACPI if default was off
off -- disable ACPI if default was on
noirq -- do not use ACPI for IRQ routing
ht -- run only enough ACPI to enable Hyper Threading
strict -- Be less tolerant of platforms that
are not

   strictly ACPI specification compliant.

I think you were trying for acpi=noirq noapic nolapic. And, it
wouldn't hurt to throw in a pci=noacpi for good measure. Most of the
'net gets these parameters wrong, though, so I realize you saw someone
else recommend this...

Note, also, that acpi=off would give you the same IRQ-related results
as acpi=noirq (and disable the rest of ACPI, also).

[mythtv-users] Why did my remote control quit working?

2005-10-28 Thread Eric Brandt

Hi all-

My remote control with my PVR-150 was working great when I
used the packaged install (mythtv-suite). Then I decided I wanted to tweak some
of the plugin settings, so I decided to build from source.

I have built from source and got basically everything
working like it used to, but my remote control doesnt work with mythtv
anymore.

When I compiled, the ./configure script reported lirc
support : yes

I can still run my remote with irw, the messages are
received correctly (lircd is running).

I can also use the remote with irxevent piping the remote
commands to mythtv.

However, Id really prefer to get native remote
control support in mythtv so I could use my existing lircrc file.

I searched the archive with nothing pointing directly to my
problem.

Thoughts?

Any log files I should post to help the members of this
great community to figure out whats going on?

There are some reports that ivtv causes the remote to stop working after

Re: [mythtv-users] Monitor CD/DVD with Fedora?

2005-10-28 Thread Matt Goebel
Has anyone managed to get fedora to play nice with Myth's monitor CD/DVD
functionality? I've got myth setup up to do that, specifically for DVD's to
 bring
up the menu. No matter what I try it doesn't seem to work though. I've
 edited
/etc/fstab so that my dvd-rom shows up as:

 /dev/hdc/media/cdrom ufs,iso9660
 exec,ro,noauto,user 0
 0

That seems to work so that HAL (fstab-sync) doesn't re-write /etc/fstab.
 Myth just
ignores it though. If I use anything besides /dev/hdc (say /dev/dvd, a
 symlink to
/dev/hdc) fstab-sync removes all dvd-rom related entries and adds it's own
 again.
Is there some specific device or mount point I need to have in fstab for
 Myth? How
do I work around HAL to do that?

I've been messing around with this myself recently. Make
sure that you select/enable Monitor CD/DVD in the the frontend; Setup
- General, it's a few screens in.

I was having the same issues with /etc/fstab being re-written by fstab-sync so I am using this entry:

/dev/hdb
/media/cdrom
iso9660 pamconsole,exec,noauto,user 0 0

That is, I changed the fstype to iso9660 from auto per Jarod's
advice, and I removed managed from the options as this seems to cause
fstab-sync to leave the entry alone. This *mostly* works (the
entry survives a reboot) except that every now and then I have to ssh
into the box and $ umount /dev/hdb. I don't know why that
is... I'll have one of two problems; either xine will exit very
quickly after trying to play a DVD with a quick flash of an error
message saying something to effect that the device can't be read.
Or, after watching the DVD, I can't eject it from the drive.

Unmounting the drive seems to always fix this, at least for a
while. The strange thing is that sometimes I get an error message
back saying the drive wasn't mounted to begin with, but it works fine
after the failed umount anyway. Everything is sunshine and
happiness for a while but eventually the problem comes back; I haven't
figured out why.

Anyway, this is just a heads-up in case you decide to use this entry in
your system and you start to see similar things. I haven't spent
much time trying to figure this out as I can work around it and other
things have taken priority recently. My system is a dedicated
FE/BE, FC3 setup using Jarod's guide, myth 18.1 from atrpms.

when you view the status of a job in mythweb and it shows percentage
complete, FPS, etc what it is displaying to you is the value in the
comment field of the jobqueue table in mysql. So any status
information you want to pass to other apps should be inserted into
mythconverg.jobqueue.comment for the job it pertains to.

If the app you're writing is in C++ I believe you will find some
methods to update this field in jobqueue.cpp (don't recall offhand
where that file lives in the source tree). If your app isn't in
C++ then you'll probably have to write your own methods to access the
DB and update that field.

Hope that helps,

Re: [mythtv-users] Problem with mythfilldatabase and UK listings

2005-10-28 Thread Lee

So, this is what I do:

1. run mythtv-setup and clear my card and channel settings. In the
video sources I use the United Kingdom (alternative) which uses
tv_grab_uk_rt and I click Finish. At 50%, I flick to the terminal
window and type 'all' to accept all channels. I then press esc to exit
the setup program and run:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ mythfilldatabase

It then gives me the following output:

taste.co.uk.

Can anyone help me with this?

Jono,

If you selected ALL, you have many many channels defined in your database...
Mythfill should work (I get the same errors - ignore them) but it will
take a long time, I'm sure mine took a couple of hours last week on my
new build...

The best bet is to use MythWeb (the webserver plugin) and delete any
channels you don't get/want, this will speed up the fill.

Next time you run it it shouldn't take as long...

try it doesn't seem to work though.I've edited /etc/fstab so
that my dvd-rom shows up
as:/dev/hdc/media/cdrom
ufs,iso9660exec,ro,noauto,user 0 0That seems
to work so that HAL (fstab-sync) doesn't re-write
/etc/fstab.Myth justignores it though.[David
Maher]

I
use chattr to make fstab immutable, that way it can't be overwritten by
fstab-sync.
chattr -V +i /etc/fstab
To
undo this if I need to edit fstab
chattr -V -i /etc/fstab

The -V is optional, it just diplays the results of your change so
that you can see that it worked

xine will exit very quickly after trying to play a DVD with a quick flash of
an error message saying something to effect that the device can't be read.
Or, after watching the DVD, I can't eject it from the drive.

DVD's are not iso9660, they're udf. I don't know why Jarod's guide
suggests iso9660, but I'd guess he was suggesting that for a CD drive,
not for a DVD drive used for both DVD's and CD's. Otherwise, it must be
to work around some problem in FC4, in which case you can just ignore me...

Fwd: [mythtv-users] mac osx frontend and mysql

2005-10-28 Thread Paul McKellar
the only one that existed was my ~/.mythtv/mysql.txt and it was right,
which is why it can now connect to mysql. but not the back end. it
still tries to connect to backend on localhost. i tried deleting hte
mysql.txt file and that works at getting me back to a point where i
can resetup the mysql server info, but that doesn't help with the
backend ip. it is like the frontend isn't respecting the data in
mysql. although it does change my theme to the master settings.

thanks for your time

Re: [mythtv-users] pass info for job queue status

2005-10-28 Thread WiFi Fun
This is not in C, but accessing the DB is no problem. The key then is
how to find what job item I am. Looking at the jobqueue table it
looks like we have the same chanid, start/end times used to identify
the recorded program the job relates to. This should work. The field
statustime; is this updated by the queue, or where I would stamp when
I update the comment field. Maybe I should leave it alone, and only
update the comment field. Looks pretty straight forward. Now.

scripts, I am stumped as to where to look for doing this. It would be
great to send a percentage complete, or fps of the encoding process so
  the user can monitor this.

Some time again I made a few modifications to nuvexport to support updating
of the status when running user jobs. I don't currently have access to
those mods as the machine holding them is currently down so I can't really
give many specifics at the moment. However, when you view the status of a
job in mythweb and it shows percentage complete, FPS, etc what it is
displaying to you is the value in the comment field of the jobqueue table in
mysql. So any status information you want to pass to other apps should be
inserted into mythconverg.jobqueue.comment for the job it pertains to.

If the app you're writing is in C++ I believe you will find some methods to
update this field in jobqueue.cpp (don't recall offhand where that file
lives in the source tree). If your app isn't in C++ then you'll probably
have to write your own methods to access the DB and update that field.

  Hope that helps,

Todd Houle wrote:

There was a time in the '90s in Silicon Valley where this would
show that you knew of rm -rf making you a leading candidate for
a 50-100k job ;-).

What tables to I need to modify in Mysql to empty things out? so i can
start recording again? I just did recorded, but under upcoming
recordings in mythtv, I still see T - Max Recordings. even though my
media library says no recordings...

First, backup your database before making any manual changes:

http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-22.html#ss22.5

Do I need to explain why you may want to do this =)?

The information about your recordings is in the recorded table.
First, grab a list of the missing shows and episodes:

$ mysql -u mythtv -pmythtv mythconverg
mysql select title, subtitle from recorded where hostname='yourhost' order by
title;

Cut'n'paste this into a file that you can look at later.

If you have slaves with local disks, you do not want to remove
the entries for those recording that you still have. You can remove
just the recordings for the host where the recordings are missing
with:

$ mysql -u mythtv -pmythtv mythconverg
mysql delete from recorded where hostname=yourhost;

If, however, you have just the one backend, you can:

mysql truncate table recorded;
mysql truncate table recordedmarkup;
mysql truncate table recordedprogram;
mysql truncate table recordedcredits;
mysql truncate table recordedrating;

[Don't bother with these other tables if you still have recordings
on other hosts. It's to much trouble to pluck out the right stuff
and a little cruft won't hurt you.]

This will fix the too many recordings problem and clean up the
Watch Recordings page.

Next, if you want to try to re-record the things that were deleted,
go to the Previously Recorded page and view it sorted by title.
Look at the list of titles and subtitles you made earlier and find
them on this page. For each one you find, press Enter and click
Remove this episode from the list. This will allow it to re-record
if it is shown again.

Hope this helps.

[mythtv-users] 2 DTV questions

2005-10-28 Thread Mickey Chandler
1) Is anyone got something that will let me see the PPV listings? I
know there used to be a script, but it never worked for me and I'm
pretty sure that I've seen here that its no longer maintained.

2) Far more importantly to me, every once in a while my D10-200
locks up. This means that channels won't change, no picture is
displayed, etc. I can't even turn it off using the power button. I
have to actually unplug it from the wall and wait 30 seconds. This
doesn't happen very often, maybe twice in the last six or nine
months, but when it happens I start looking for a problem with my
normally very reliable Myth setup instead of the STB where I should
be looking. Am I alone in this or have others had this trouble too?

  versions?

If you install a new version into /usr and the old is in /usr/local then
which one gets called would depend upon the ordering of your $PATH
variable. Given the nature of linux, I suspect however, that each version,
if called directly would run quite happily because each would look for its
own libraries in its own path (ie: the old one would always look in
/usr/local/lib while the new one would only look to /usr/lib) This would
be fine until they start looking at the same database... and possibly
 using different schemas.

Unless you wish to live dangerously, it would be best practice to rpm -e
the original version before 'make install' of the new *if they are going
into different places. If the same, then the new will over-write the old.

Well thanks for all the advice. You've convinced me that I should
delete the rpms, so it's off to start doing some serious backing-up!.

Thanks again,

[mythtv-users] Hardware Woes

2005-10-28 Thread Gregg
I recently upgraded my motherboard and processor from a p4 1.6 to a p4
3.0 and asus p4r800-v deluxe. It seems that hdtv stutters more than it
did on the 1.6. I was able to watch it on the 1.6 without stutter
unless I fast forwarded it. Should I upgrade the kernel to an
SNMP version? I used Jarods Guide to originally install mythtv. I
am currently running 2.6.11-1.14_FC3, 512mb ram p4
3.0ghz,pchdtv3000,pvr250, fx5200, and 120gig hd.

Any suggestions are greatly appriciated.

[mythtv-users] Jittery Audio/video

2005-10-28 Thread Roger McClurg

Hello List,
I've gone through a hundred messages from list archives, looked at I
can't remember how many how-tos, searched the Gentoo and EPIA forums and
wikis, and tried everything I can think of, but I can't get LiveTV and
recording playback to play normally. The Audio stutters, and the video
jitters when it tries to sync with the audio. I tried turning on extra
audio buffers, but no soap. When I use MythVideo to playback mpg videos
I made earlier, they play just fine. If I drop out of MythTV and play
the Myth recordings in Mplayer, they play beautifully too. Why the
difference? Shouldn't the problem exist everywhere?

A little background. Myth frontend and backend are on the same machine,
a VIA EPIA M1, which provides the audio and video. TV is from a
PVR-350. I am running Gentoo Linux V2.6.12-r10, with the Xorg drm
modules. Mplayer has the XvMC patch. I run ivtv from fb.

There are no errors I can find in dmesg, or the Xorg logs. Everything
else in Mythtv looks and runs beautifully.

Has anyone else with this hardware had and solved this problem? Can
anyone help?

xine will exit very quickly after trying to play a DVD with a quick flash ofan error message saying something to effect that the device can't be read.Or, after watching the DVD, I can't eject it from the drive.
DVD's are not iso9660, they're udf.I don't know why Jarod's guidesuggests iso9660, but I'd guess he was suggesting that for a CD drive, not for a DVD drive used for both DVD's and CD's.Otherwise, it must be
to work around some problem in FC4, in which case you can just ignore me...

Huh, I don't know if Jarod was trying for some kind of work-around or
not. I have been playing with this for a few minutes and am now
to the point where Matt is; the monitoring doesn't seem to work and the

I'm out of time, though. I'll play around with this some more tomorrow.

I can't offer much in the way of fixing the stuttering I'm afraid, but I
can tell you not to try upgrading the kernel to an SNMP version. ..

SNMP is Simple Network Management Protocol , I suspect you're thinking
of SMP (Symmetric MultiProcessing ). To take advantage of an SMP kernel
you'd need two CPU's (or possibly one of the 'new' dual core CPU's , tho
I don't know if SMP would see the as seperate ).

Please don't think I'm being 'funny' , just trying to save you the aggro
of installing a new kernel and possibly spending a long time
recompiling / reinstalling if you don't need to..

Re: [mythtv-users] Hardware Woes

2005-10-28 Thread Robert Denier
The only obvious thing that comes to mind is to check that any hard
drives that are involved in streaming are actually using dma. I.E.

hdparm /dev/hda

Beyond that, in no particular order...
1) Are you running a good video card driver? (Perhaps a binary driver
from your hardware vendor?)
2) Is your kernel configured for preemption? Sometimes that can help,
and occasionally, it can even hurt, but the second is mostly due to some
other buggy driver.
3) There are options to use DRI(sp?) [Direct Rendering] and such for
video cards. I've never been ambitious enough to get them working as I
haven't had the need, but with hdtv you might have the need. I believe
that also requires some kernel configuration.
4) Are program versions actually compiled with support for the P4?
Things run a bit faster if programs use all the processors native
instructions rather than say only those that would work on a generic
686. I tend to doubt this is the cause of your problem though.

Good luck,
-Robert

[mythtv-users] Window Managers - Success with ratpoison instead of kde

2005-10-28 Thread Support [ Ian Ward ]

Hi all,

I had been meaning to try this for ages, but was bored today so I
thought I would risk WAF FAF

I have a master backend/frontend running on FC3, I use my FC4
workstation as a frontend when the family insist on watching soap.

ratpoison makes alot of sense as kde is such a beast.
I also took the opportunity to change the way the frontend is spawned so
that on the odd occasion it crashes, you don't need to get up off the
lounge to control-alt-backspace the X

I have gdm set to autologon after 5 seconds.

The newest prebuilt rpm I could find was here:
ftp://sunsite.auc.dk/projects/newrpms/www/htdocs/apt/redhat/en/i386/fc2/RPMS.newrpms/ratpoison-1.3.0-1.rhfc2.nr.i386.rpm

this is a FC2 version that loaded on my FC3 without issue, and on my FC4
after installing compat-readline

It is a super lean window manager that spawns in an insant.
To get full screen xterm is as easy at typing Control-c Control-t c
(that's three keystrokes)
I would recommend it as it saves mucking around with disabling the kde
sound server, modifying mouse focus etc..

Why waste memory on a window manager when it is not required

On RedHat the switchdesk command creates .Xclients and
.Xclients-default in your home directory to set for kde
I created a .Xclients-ratpoison and called it from .Xclients , that will
keep it safe from being overwritten with switchdesk

Instead of having my startup commands in .kde/Autostart/myth-load.sh I
have put them into the .Xclients script
I also changed things around so that the window manager is spawned to
the background and it is the presence of mythfrontend process that
keeps the X session from dying. If the frontend exits, so does the X
session

My one line .Xclients file looks like this

exec ./.Xclients-ratpoison

My .Xclients-ratpoison looks like this

#!/bin/bash

/usr/bin/ratpoison

# To get an xterm with Ratpoison, Control-c Control-t c

2005-10-28 Thread James Grant
I don't get why people even use a WM (for a dedicated mythtv box)... I run
mythtv perfect without any overhead from a windows manager...

on x:tty7 (in my inittab) i have /home/mythtv/startup.sh

which contains:

/path/to/X
sleep 8
/path/to/mythfrontend

this has the added advantage, that if mythfrontend crashes (which it does from
time to time) the script will exit, and inittab will recycle tty7 and start
the script again, thus bringing the frontend right back up automagically.

maybe not Linux Standards Base compliant, but works like a charm :)

[mythtv-users] Front end memory usage

2005-10-28 Thread Alberto Alonso
I am experimenting with a diskless setup based on Knoppmyth R5A16

After the frontend is done resizing things, memory usage of the
mythfrontend process starts to increase from 18M (right after the
resizing is done) to 107M of Resident memory (virtual is at 171M)

Trying to run the weather plugin kills the frontend, as I only
have 256M RAM and it runs out of memory.

So, the question is, where is the frontend memory going? It seems
that 107M of resident RAM just to display the main menu is quite
excessive. Did I miss-configure my system?

Thanks,

Alberto

It's a pain to try to play a DVD in xine, and have it
