I remember a "funny" display on a CDC 160A, there were 8 lamps illuminating
a frosted glass, each lamp had a cover where a number was cut out. This
made it possible to display an octal digit easily. But it didn't have the
charm of a Nixie.

Electronic Counting Circuits by JB Dance - that has a long chapter on
dekat
I think Laurence Wilkins' Cyclox design takes a lot of beating for a
classic one tube clock.
