This is a simple power supply I'm devising for a pair of Nimo's. 12 Volts

circuit from 12V to produce 1V @ around 200ma for each tube filament. Just
a quick sketch, think this would work well without being TOO complicated

I like the discussion here. I'm working on a 2 Nimo clock w/VFD for myself, and

Hi everyone,
My name is Kevin, and I've recently developed a nixie obsession. This seems

Also, I'm currently working on a project to make a 10 digit display from

I forgot to add that two details not visible in my PCB are that the
polarity (POL) line on the HV5530's is pulled high, and the blank lines
(BL) are connected to the microcontroller on a PWN pin, as defined in the

If I had to fix this, I would try taping the tube to a piece of wood and
knocking the wood against a hard surface. This way you can still transmit a
shock to the tube without directly smacking the glass.

Nice work. K155ID1 is a very large chip however.
Check out the microchip hv5523.
Very small high voltage serial to parallel converter (qfn-44 package). 32

The holding force is pretty snug. I think the 7971 has a pretty strong base
but it's always important to be careful and insert a tube with straight
pins slowly. I gyrate the tube slightly while gently inserting to give all
the pins a chance to line up. Then I push it straight in without worrying

inconsistent ionization across tubes. It could also be a combination of

I doubt they will sell. If the asking price was low $200s or high $100s

Thanks Nick! I'd like to do more if I could find the time.

Just wanted to share a nixie related project I've been working on for a few
weeks now. I've got the boards ordered for my latest revision. Looking for
any feedback and to see if this interests anyone.

Since I got
I just published info about this design on my website including the
schematic, bill of materials, and a link to download the gerber artwork.
See:
https://neonkev.com/2019/09/06/10-watt-nixie-power-supply-for-mod-six-clock/
Remember, this board specifically is laid out for the clock I wanted to
of this module with their
clock, mainly for liability reasons and/or warrantying the MOD-SIX
electronics.
The design is open source as of now, so it is free to be explored by anyone
on his/her own accord.
Thanks,
Kevin

Let me see what I can do. I have some ideas about how a 40 watt version
would be possible without too many tweaks. I'll take a stab at that if
you're not in a rush.

never sent a package overseas, but I could certainly try! Hopefully
customs doesn't panick at the sight of mysterious circuit boards.
Thank you,

I see your point. For a clock that's running off of a decent quality wall
wart, I dont see the added complexity of undervoltage compensation being
necessary. If it were an automotive or battery powered application, sure.

Why not just use a TVS diode for input protection?

the specific application can also be adjusted by changing the current sense
resistor, as the TPS40211 is a current mode controller. Stay tuned!

Wow. From the days when HP actually engineered high end products...

Interesting video I found while digging around Japanese twitter on nixie
tube related posts: CD27's (BIG tubes) used in some sort of sign.

I would start by taking a look at the "Mod Six" 7971 clock by the team over
at badnixie.com. This has pretty much been *the *clock for 7971s, as it is
loaded with features and is by all means a professional quality product.

Check out the assembly
Ahh they used IN-14s with the upside down 2!!!

For hot air rework, the Quick 861DW is the best value in my opinion (not
affiliated with quick). It competes with stations over twice the price. EEV
blog and Louos Rossman have reviews on it.

Very nice!!! To pull off the electrical design, fab and integrate it into
an aesthetically pleasing watch design is no small feat.
My only criticism of the z5900m is the coarse anode. In my opinion the
previous style tube you used (Burroughs) with the fine mesh anode is much
nicer to look at. But
Just wanted to put a PSA out there for anyone planning on building a PV
electronics nixie clock kit.
I recieved my kit for an "elite" clock recently, and inspecting the tube driver
board revealed some poor soldering of the 44-QPF HV5622 drivers. One chip had a
solder bridge between two legs,

Wow. I was thinking that these would be really neat with a mirror or some
kind of rotating effect, where each tube spins with it's own slip ring as
the digits change.
