A buddy of mine who works for a communications co. says that Solaris
is way more stable for mission critical servers than linux. What do
you guys think? Would any of you implement Solaris/openSolaris over
Linux in certain situations? and if so why?

OpenSolaris IS based on Linux nowIf you have an old copy of Solaris
and perhaps some old Sun hardware, you might give it a try. But for most
'modern' servers, Linux is a better choice going forward, since Sun

Both are the same ;) But where are you going to find Solaris admin's if you
had to replace someone? Linux admins are already hard enough to find. Its
like my boss loves HP-UX, but if you had to hire someone, could you name
more than 2 people that aren't already
I have to agree with Kevin, whole-heartedly. I've seen this situation play
out over and over, specifically with trying to get someone with (applicable)
Linux experience. Solaris experience is even more rare.
One thing that I do lover about Solaris, however, is the ZFS filesystem.

Any chance you have taken a look at some statistics on Netcraft?
I have run an old version of Solaris before, it was rock stable. In
years of running it I didn't see but one problem that I can recall.
I can't quite say the same for Linux. I keep having to replace fans
when it locks up.

Umm, how does software cause your fans to lock up?!?!?!???
Your fans are probably just lower grade, or even possibly not living
in the same quality of hosting. Our colo space has filtered air, and
good air flow. Fans last a long time in those environments.
Good hardware treated well is unlikely
