Paul,
Try to telnet to the SQL server from windows and the linux box.
telnet myserver.vanderbilt.edu 1433
Make sure you get a connection from both and be sure the response is the
same. What you are describing almost seems like it is a blocked port. If
that works then I am at a loss. Do you

Do you need to run ldconfig?

All that leads to the whole if you rent the modem, then they can't
point to it as the problem without replacing it. Consider it a insurance
policy, you pay it every time it is due so you aren't the one on the hook
when crap happens.
Other point to check is signal strength. I have seen a lot of

I have Comcast at home and at work. Both have been working fairly well,
with the exception of a few cable problems at work (maybe twice this
year).
Having dealt with a similar problem at the house a few years ago I
suspect there is either a cable problem or possibly a protocol / timing
mismatch
Just looked at a memory upgrade for my desktop computer and discovered that
in 8 months, memory prices have not dropped..
Nov 27, 2009 : $111 for OCZ PC3-10666 Platinum RAM 4Gb Kit (2 x 2Gb)
Jul 30, 2010 : $110 for OCZ PC3-10666 Platinum RAM 4Gb Kit (2 x 2Gb)
and to top it off, memory densities
These look pretty cheap to me :

I'd go with the Crucial memory but you'd probably be ok with the
cheapest of the lot as well.

Greetings,
I'm shopping for a new video card (PCI Express 2.1 x16) and it's been so
long since I did this sort of thing that I have no idea what the
reputable brands are anymore.
Which brands/chipsets enjoy the best Linux support and best reputation
for quality? Which should I avoid?

The new 5770 cards with GDDR5 are quite nicely priced at $150 after
rebate... I just bought the overclocked one by Diamond and so far I like
it, though I have not done ANYTHING that would use the 3d portion yet
like I said I just got it... yesterday.
Almost all manufacturers use reference
Not trying to sound like a nvidia fanboi, but the 9800's is a pretty
good deal in the nvidia line unless you want to go with the GTX 240
series. Linux support seems better on the nVidia side than the ATI
side. I've always had problems with ATI cards in linux. never had a
problem with nVidia in
When it comes to Linux, I always recommend Nvidia-based video cards. ATI
has a very bad history of driver support in Linux.

I've got a Motorola Surfboard SB5100 that I bought in 2001 or 2002 and it

It might be because DDR3 has been introduced and some fabs are using
capacity to make DDR3, instead of DDR2, so supply hasn't gone up, which is
usually what makes prices go down.

One more vote against ATI. Granted, Nvidia isn't perfect, but I can
generally get everything working after a bit. ATI driver doesn't
support the video mode that MythTV uses, so I can't use my wife's new
laptop as a remove tv viewer.

Gotcha, I've narrowed my search to cards with an nVidia chipset.
I've also just noticed an issue with the case PCIe

Make sure your power supply has enough juice for the card. New (1-2
years) video cards are energy hogs and they run HOT, especially if you
plan on running any last generation games or doing any high end
graphics design. I had to replace both my wife's HP and Son's Dell PSU
before I could upgrade
I did have to reset my ATT DSL modem a couple of days ago in order to restore
connectivity, but it had been six months or so since I last had to do so.

I think what i'm seeing here is a mix of problems and kudos. Seems
like ATT and Comcast have pretty much the same fail rate and progress
