Columbia overall is probably still miffed because apparently this deal was
in the works before he got into talks with them, and it's unclear whether
they knew it or not. I'm sure Columbia hoped to make a lot of money
servicing retail outlets in the UK on the back of Prince's 21 night run.
The biggest marketing opportunity locally in the UK and his move undercuts
that by already saturating the market and side-stepping their distribution
outlets by using his own (a newspaper & concert).

Was it the record company who was mad or record industry. If it was record
company then my mistake. Yeah, that doesn't make sense.

Yeah, I think we are all used to his nuttiness but this smacks of actual
insanity and so I totally wonder what he could be thinking. Surely there had
to be some logic and reason in this decision.

>From the articles I've read it seems Universal UK AND the record stores are
so pissed at him. Why the heck would Universal, let alone ANY record company
take a chance on him next time? He has an uncanny ability to shoot himself
in the foot, it seems.

So many CDs will end up in the trash. Such a waste. At least when he gave
cd's away during Musicology it was to people who liked him enough to buy a
ticket to his concert.

"when it's time to download your files into your fam's computers, you
can't have any other contractual obligations."
"I'm never leaving MPLS."
"Prince is dead."

I'm starting to see the pattern here. If he says anything that sounds
final and permanent, expect him to change his mind and do just the
opposite after a while.

What do you mean, Derek? What is funny to me is that he's not making too
many friends in Europe anyway, with the whole "free cd" debacle.

Ah well. So much for the "i'm never leaving MPLS" sentiments of
yesteryear, huh? I've long lamented the "what if" of Prince moving to
Europe, tho these days I realize that's not any more out of reach
financially than LA is, for the likes of me anyway. The truth is, he is so
fickle I'd be surprised if he stuck to this supposed plan any more than
he's stuck to some of his others.

On another note, does anyone have ANY guesses as to his plan (or lack
thereof) regarding the release of THREE songs from the upcoming album
simultaneously or the whole free CD in the newspaper nonsense?
